Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis caused by traumatic brain injury complicating thyroid storm: a case report and discussion.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is an uncommon cerebrovascular disease with diverse predisposing factors. We report a case of CVST caused by a thyroid storm induced by traumatic brain injury. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old male patient with a history of Graves' disease with hyperthyroidism presented to our hospital with head trauma of cerebral contusion and laceration in both frontal lobes confirmed by admission CT scan. He received mannitol to lower intracranial pressure, haemostatic therapy, and antiepileptic treatment. Eight days later, he presented with signs of th

Characterization of nasal irrigation flow from a squeeze bottle using computational fluid dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Nasal saline irrigation has become standard of care in various sinonasal conditions, including allergic and nonallergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, and in the postoperative patient. Evidence regarding the mechanisms and dynamics of liquid flow through the sinonasal cavity remains limited due to inadequate experimental models (cadaveric, 3-dimensional [3D] printed, imaging of labeled dyes and radioisotopes). We aimed to develop a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of nasal irrigation to demonstrate sinonasal surface coverage, residence times across the mucosal surfaces,

Your Epoch is not for Trying. It's for Living and for Dying..

The article is devoted to biographies of three Russian physicians of the Silver Age (a period in the History of Russian culture between 1890 and 1917). They made early, significant and internationally recognized contribution into medical science and became eponymous, although social disasters of the twentieth century caused deep impact on their subsequent lives and careers, so their role was shadowed from global medical community. The article analyzes biographies and academic achievements of A-F.K. Siewert (aka: Zivert, Ziwert, von Siewert) (1872-1922), known for first description of the hered

Craniofacial Resection for Sinonasal Malignant Tumors: Statistical Analysis of Surgical Outcome over 17 Years at a Single Institution.

We present a retrospective analysis of surgical outcome of sinonasal malignant tumors. Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), local control (LC), and disease-free survival (DFS) were calculated in 32 patients. Prognostic factors for survival and functional outcomes were investigated. The median follow-up period was 70 months. At 5 years, OS, DSS, LC, and DFS rates were 0.722, 0.745, 0.851, and 0.707, respectively. Prognostic factors for poor OS were involvement of the frontal sinus (p = 0.023), T classification (T4, p = 0.025), surgical complications (p = 0.029), chemotherapy

[Orbital osteoma: clinical evaluation of nine cases].

INTRODUCTION: Osteoma of the nasosinus cavities, particularly the frontoethmoidal cavities, is often a fortuitous radiographic discovery. Potential complications include ophthalmological, sinusal, and endocranial disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nine patients (five men and four women), mean age 24.3 years (18-43) presenting orbital osteoma were managed from 1994 to 1999. RESULTS: Clinical signs were dominated by ophthalmological disorders, basically non-reducible exophthalmia (n = 8). Two patients had permanent unilateral nasal obstruction and one had acute sinusitis. The bony orbital tumefa

A revised stylized model of the adult extrathoracic and thoracic airways for use with the ICRP-66 human respiratory tract model.

The extrathoracic airways and lymph nodes have not yet been represented explicitly in mathematical or stylized models of the human body utilized in the transport of photons internally between source and target organs. Currently, the ICRP assumes that the extrathoracic airways are reasonably approximated by using the thyroid or brain as the surrogate source and target region within the ICRP 66 respiratory tract model. In the present study, a new mathematical model was created to explicitly consider the extrathoracic airways, as well as other respiratory structures in the thorax of the adult. Th

Clinical and histopathological studies of olfactory neuroblastoma.

Six patients of olfactory neuroblastoma were treated, and two of them were studied with electron microscopy and immunohistochemical staining. These patients, four male and two female, ranged in age from 37 to 73 years old. Five patients had nasal bleeding, and only one patient had frontal pain and optic disorder without nasal bleeding. None of the patients had metastasis. However, three patients had local recurrence and invasion into the intracranial region. The tumors of three patients were confined to the nasal cavity and one or more paranasal sinuses. The tumors of the other three patients

[Rhinocerebral mucormycosis during deferoxamine therapy].

A 24-year-old woman had been in full remission of an acute myeloid leukaemia since 1988, but she required regular erythrocyte and platelet transfusions for pancytopenia. To counteract a progressive siderophilia due to the transfusions (ferritin levels of about 10,000 ng/ml) deferoxamine was intermittently given intravenously (5 g after each transfusion). Seven months after the start of this treatment the patient was hospitalized because of severe left-sided facial pain as well as reddening and swelling in the periorbital region. As maxillary and frontal sinusitis was suspected, antibiotics wer…

Aggressive squamous cell carcinoma of the cranium of a dog.

BACKGROUND: The authors report a case of keratinized squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in a 14-year-old dog with extensive cranial bone invasion. To our knowledge, this is the first description of such a case of cranial keratinized SCC with aggressive generalized osteolysis described in a dog. CASE PRESENTATION: The 14-year-old dog was referred for radiological examination with suspicion of head trauma with clinical signs of head deformation, exophthalmos and nasal discharge. The skull radiographs showed a large osteolytic defect of the frontal bone and parietal bone in the region of the external

Outcomes After Frontal Sinus Surgery: An Evidence-Based Review.

Endoscopic sinus surgery is an effective intervention at improving quality of life for patients with medically refractory chronic rhinosinusitis. The evidence supporting frontal sinusotomy is limited to single institution case series. However, the data for Draf IIa frontal sinusotomy do demonstrate that most patients experience lasting frontal sinus patency on postoperative endoscopic examination and improvements in quality of life. Salvage endoscopic frontal sinus surgery via a Draf III shows high rates of neo-ostium patency and subjective improvements in symptoms at a 2-year time point in ca

Endoscopic surgery of the frontal sinus.

Endoscopic intranasal frontal sinusotomy represents a relatively new technique for approaching disease in the frontal sinus. As with all "new" techniques, it has not withstood the scrutiny of time. It does represent, however, a significant alternative to external obliterative procedures for the frontal sinus. The frontal sinus can be visualized with office nasal endoscopy, and the difficult evaluation of the obliterated cavity can be avoided. With an in-depth understanding of frontal sinus anatomy and the application of advanced endoscopic techniques, the frontal sinus surgeon may achieve sati

Frontobasal approach for trauma and tumor.

The potential for remediation of a host of varied disease processes afflicting the skull base has been increasingly realized over the past two decades. Advances in medical technology, the development of new approaches, and most importantly the close cooperation of the head and neck surgeon and the neurological surgeon have made this possible. Surgeons are attempting to diminish the injury to normal un-involved structures while at the same time maximizing exposure and enabling rectification of the disease or disorder. This is especially pertinent in a number of frontobasal approaches used in an

[X-ray computed tomographic study of the ethmoid and middle meatus. II. Radio-anatomy (axial incidence) and morphological variations].

Chronic rhinosinusitis endoscopic surgery needs an accurate evaluation of diseases and paranasal sinus anatomic variations. High resolution CT by thin section (2 mm) allow this pre-operative assessment. An anatomical study of the ethmoid air cell system is always possible in axial plane. The bidimensional CT exploration (axial and coronal plane) displays the anatomic variations of ostiomeatal unit, that have been reported to predispose sinusitis. They are nasal septal deviation, pneumatization and paradoxical curvature of the middle turbinate, pneumatization of unciform process, Haller's cells

[The nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses of the red deer (Cervus elaphus)--anatomical corrosion studies].

By means of thirty skulls of dominating female animals the formation and topography of the Cavum nasi and its Sinus paranasales of the red-deer are described. The main results are on the one hand the total absence of a Sinus frontalis and a Sinus sphenoidalis and on the other hand the characteristic formation of the Sinus ethmoidales. Amongst critical discussion with the available literature concerning the pneumatisation of skulls of red-deer a comparison with the well-known findings about the Cavum nasi and its Sinus paranasalis at the sheep, goat, roe-deer and cattle is following.
