Virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines have become one of the dominant vaccine candidates for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). To further enhance the immunogenicity of VLP vaccines, gold nanocages (AuNCs) were selected as an adjuvant for the vaccine. Our experiments demonstrated that AuNCs had little biotoxicity in vivo and in vitro and improved the uptake of VLP in BHK-21 and RAW264.7 cell lines.
