We describe an 18-year-old dental technician who presented with dry hyperkeratotic lesions on his left palm that were limited to an area that was in contact with a container in which he had prepared the molds for a dental prosthesis. On patch testing, he had a positive reaction to black rubber mix and its components N-cyclohexyl-N'-phenyl-4-phenylenediamine, N,N'-diphenyl-4-phenylenediamine, and N-isopropyl-N'-phenyl-4-phenylenediamine, as well as to a piece of the rubber container. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) of a piece of the rubber container confirmed the presence of the para-phenylened

Hair dye allergies are a frequent cause of occupational skin disease among hairdressers. Conventional hair dyes contain 4-phenylenediamine (PPD), 2, 5-diaminotoluene sulfate (DTS) and 2-nitro-4-phenylenediamine (ONPPD) as allergens. In new generation hair dyes, FD & C and D & C dyes are used in the hair dye formulations. This study investigated the cross-reaction pattern of new generation hair dyes among hairdressers (n = 40) with a known allergy to PPD and/or DTS and/or ONPPD. In the 40 hairdressers no positive reactions were observed to the single FD & C and D & C dyes. In two hairdressers,

A 48-year-old Japanese man developed coalesced erythema multiforme-like lesions on the forearms and the dorsa of hands that were exposed to a cutting oil product. Subsequently, multiple, round erythematous lesions with iris formation occurred on the trunk and four extremities that had no direct contact with the oil. It is suggested that erythema multiforme can be induced via some allergic processes following a contact reaction.

A worksite survey was conducted in all 38 Finnish electroplating plants. All workers (n = 163) who worked with nickel plating (bath workers, hangers and solution makers) were interviewed with a questionnaire about symptoms of nickel dermatitis, hand dermatitis, and about protective measures, atopy, etc. Patch testing with nickel sulfate was done with the TRUE TestTM method. All the workers, 94 men and 69 women, answered the questionnaire. The mean age of women was 41.1 years, and of men 43.1 years, respectively. Men had longer occupational exposure to nickel (14 years) than women (10 years). M

BACKGROUND: Housekeepers are exposed to irritants and allergens in their work and are at significant risk for developing occupationally induced contact dermatitis.
OBJECTIVE: We studied housekeepers at the Hershey Medical Center to determine the cause and frequency of contact dermatitis and contact urticaria in these workers.
METHODS: All housekeepers were examined. Those with hand dermatitis had an extensive history, patch testing, and latex RAST testing.
RESULTS: Eight of 130 had hand dermatitis. None had a relevant positive patch test or positive RAST test.
CONCLUSIONS: Of our housekeep

Patch testing was carried out in 424 schoolchildren (223M, 201F), aged 7-12 years, in northern Norway. In 99 (23.3%) of these children, one or more allergic patch test reactions were demonstrated; 30 children reacted to two and 6 to three or more substances; 53 irritant reactions were recorded in 33 (7.8%) of those tested. From a total of 144 positive tests, the most common allergen was nickel (14.9%), followed by cobalt (5.7%), kathon CG (5.2%), lanolin (1.7%) and neomycin (1.4%). Both allergic and irritant reactions were found twice as frequently in girls as in boys. Positive patch tests wer

Contact dermatitis among hairdressers is common. In The Netherlands, registered sick leave for hand dermatitis among hairdressers rose from 21,050 days in 1986 to 54,293 in 1991. In a survey among 45 hairdressers in 5 different salons, 12 had a history of hand dermatitis and 16 showed moderate to severe hand dermatitis. After extensive investigations, 13 were classified as having allergic contact dermatitis and 3 cumulative irritant contact dermatitis. In the past 4 years, 103 hairdressers were extensively patch tested and glyceryl thioglycolate (GTG), ammonium persulfate and nickel sulfate we

In continuation of our preceding studies, we disclose long-term experiments to test more extensively the protective power of the novel 4H Glove. 2 compounds encountered in modern electron microscopy technique, 1-hexadecene (1-HD) and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA), which elicit allergic and/or toxic reactions in laboratory workers, were tested for their penetration through the 4H Glove material 1-HD has not to our knowledge been tested on any glove material. 2-HEA was known to have a breakthrough time exceeding 240 min; in contrast, it penetrates the common latex or vinyl gloves within minute

2 dental technicians, both with chronic hand eczema, reported worsening from the use of 2 products containing methyl methacrylate, employed in manufacturing acrylic prostheses. Patch tests in both patients gave positive reactions to methyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and products employed in manufacturing acrylic prostheses (2% and 5% pet.). On the basis of results subsequently obtained from patch tests carried out with pieces of glove interposed between the skin and the allergens (methyl methacrylate and products employed), we advised our patients still to use latex gloves du

A carpet factory worker, exposed to a number of different dyes, developed a severe hand dermatitis. The handling of warm, wet and freshly-dyed yarn with unprotected hands was thought to have caused the onset of dermatitis. Patch testing indicated that the patient was sensitive to only one of the dyes handled, namely Synacril Red 3B liquid, which is based on the single dyestuff Basic Red 22 (CI 11055). Chemical analysis revealed the dyestuff to be of high purity (greater than 95%), suggesting that sensitization was caused by the Basic Red 22 dyestuff itself and not by an avoidable impurity.

Thirty-four psoriatic patients (23 males, 11 females) were found to have skin manifestations of dermatophyte infection. Tinea pedis was observed in 20 cases, tinea cruris in 6 and tinea manuum in 2. T. rubrum was the causative agent in all of these with the exception of 2 cases caused by E. floccosum. Lesions of tinea corporis were found intermingled with psoriatic plaques in various areas of the body skin in 6 patients (4 males, 2 females); T. rubrum was isolated from 5 of these and M. canis from one. Twenty-one of these psoriatic patients also had lesions caused by C. albicans in the toe-web

The authors report 13 cases of tinea manuum and emphasize that this condition is not commonly described in the Brazilian medical literature. Eight males and five females, aged 18 to 72 years, presented an infection ranging from 1 month to 20 years. The main clinical picture was of desquamating type on the palms without fingernails lesions. All patients had associated dermatophytosis of the feet. Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. rubrum and Epidermophyton floccosum were the species isolated from the hands. The trichophytin test was positive in all cases and treatment with oral griseofulvin and to
