Structure of Intestinal Helminths in Rhytiodus microlepis (Characiformes: Anostomidae): Distribution, Histopathology and Relationships With Seasonal Dynamics of an Amazonian Floodplain Lake.

The composition and structure of the helminth fauna in the intestine of the anostomid fish Rhytiodus microlepis was studied during two distinct periods in a floodplain lake in Central Amazonia. Additionally, the tissue damage in the infected intestine caused by the endoparasites was observed. Of the 38 fish analysed, a high prevalence of infection by Digenea (metacercariae) and Acanthocephala (> 90%) was observed; the metacercariae preferred the initial portions of the intestine, with a high frequency of occurrence in the lamina propria of the mucosa (75.9%), while the acanthocephalans occurre

The impact of the termination of Lymphatic Filariasis mass drug administration on Soil-transmitted Helminth prevalence in school children in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) have been passively targeted through the implementation of mass drug administration (MDA), with the drugs ivermectin and albendazole, against the parasitic disease, lymphatic filariasis (LF). In Malawi, LF MDA was administered to communities between 2008 and 2014. The aim of this analysis was to estimate the impact of LF MDA and its termination on STH prevalence in school aged children (SAC). METHODOLOGY: School survey data of STH prevalence in Malawi were obtained through the ESPEN website. The surveys spanned the periods before (1998-2004), durin

Modulation of carbendazim toxicity by enhanced acanthocephalan infection in a freshwater fish.

Interactions between parasites and their hosts are shaped by ecological context, yet how anthropogenic pollution modifies these coevolved relationships remains poorly understood. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly exposed to chronic contamination by pesticides, which can affect host physiology, immunity, and behavior, as well as parasite development and transmission. Disentangling the independent and interactive effects of these stressors requires controlled experimental approaches. Here, 109 individuals of the freshwater fish Squalius cephalus were experimentally infected, each with 15 ac

Far away from home: gastrointestinal parasites trace the journey of a grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) from the Wadden Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.

Grey seals, Halichoerus grypus (GSs), inhabit cold temperate and subarctic waters along the North Atlantic Ocean. Individuals of GS can regularly disperse towards southern areas (ca. 38°N-39°N) but occurrence at lower latitudes is exceptional. On 18 February 2022, a 217-cm-long male of GS was detected in waters off the SW Atlantic coast of Spain (37°N), then entered the western Mediterranean Sea and wandered for 15 days until he died. Here, we use gastrointestinal parasites to investigate the geographical origin of the GS and the length of the journey towards Mediterranean waters. Seven helmin

CD160-competent ILC2 are crucial for the ejection of intestinal helminths by the innate immune system.

1.6 billion people are currently infected with parasitic worms. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) play a central role in promoting the protective type 2 immunity against these parasites. Here we show that a subpopulation of intestinal ILC2 express the immune checkpoint molecule CD160 in mice infected with the parasitic nematode Strongyloides ratti. CD160+ ILC2 represented a distinct ST2-IL-17RB+Ki-67+ subset that expanded in vivo during S. ratti infection. By contrast, CD160- ILC2 were ST2+IL-17RB-Ki-67- and represented the dominant producers of type 2 cytokines. Upon in vitro stimulation,

Implications of global health funding patterns for implementation of a novel soil-transmitted helminth and lymphatic filariasis medicine: Ivermectin/albendazole fixed-dose combination.

BACKGROUND: Medicine donation programs have been central to neglected tropical disease (NTD) control, particularly for soil-transmitted helminths (STH), but growing concerns about sustainability, supply continuity, and country ownership highlight the need for new access models. A novel fixed-dose combination (FDC) of ivermectin and albendazole, recently endorsed by the European Medicines Agency, offers programmatic advantages over monotherapy. Unlike some existing treatments, the FDC may not be donated. This paper examines how the current drug donation landscape for STH shapes the prospects fo

Helminths infection of Schizothorax niger in Kashmir, India: morphological and molecular characterization.

BACKGROUND: The identification of helminth parasites in Schizothorax spp. from Kashmir, including Schyzocotyle acheilognathi, Pomphorhynchus kashmirensis, and Adenoscolex oreini, is hindered by morphological limitations and high intraspecific variation. While previous studies have relied on morphological diagnosis, a comprehensive molecular characterization is lacking. To address these limitations and achieve more accurate species identification, this study employs molecular techniques such as DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. METHOD: Genomic DNA was extracted using standardized proto

Sex-dependent effects of infection on guppy reproductive fitness and offspring parasite resistance.

Infection imposes energetic costs on hosts. Hosts typically respond by shifting resources, potentially affecting the quantity and quality of offspring they produce. As the sexes differ in their optimal reproductive strategies, the infection of mothers versus fathers may affect offspring quantity and quality in different ways. Here, we test how experimental infection of guppies Poecilia reticulata with the ectoparasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli affects parental reproductive fitness and offspring parasite resistance. We compared breeding pairs in which one or neither parent had previously been infe

Helminth diversity in brine shrimps (Artemia) from Ukraine.

Brine shrimps (Artemia spp.) are aquatic crustaceans known as important intermediate hosts for a wide range of helminth species. From 2011 to 2021, 4,347 individuals of brine shrimp were collected for this study, investigating the diversity and infection rates of helminth species in Artemia spp. from hypersaline waters in southern and eastern Ukraine. Seven helminth species were found: six cestodes (Anomotaenia tringae, Eurycestus avoceti, Branchiopodataenia gvozdevi, Confluaria podicipina, Fimbriarioides tadornae, Hymenolepis s.l. stellorae) and one unidentified acuariid nematode (Acuariidae

Indigenous ethno-nutraceutical plants: Potential game-changers for the dual management of ruminant helminths and undernutrition in sub-saharan africa.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ruminant productivity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains low largely due to helminth infections coupled with undernutrition. To jointly boost ruminant health and nutritional status, rural farmers in SSA often resort to indigenous ethno-nutraceutical plants (iENPs), which form part of folkloric practices perceived to be more accessible, affordable and effective compared with chemotherapy which is challenged by helminth resistance. However, these perceived advantages are largely unsubstantiated. AIM OF THE STUDY: The current review aimed to 1) identify iENPs use

Zoonotic Parasites in Marmosets (Callithrix Spp.) From Southern Brazil: Insights From a One Health Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Currently, six species of Callithrix are frequently observed in anthropized and degraded environments in different regions of Brazil. This occupation favors interactions with humans and increases the risk of infection by parasites with zoonotic potential. This study assessed the occurrence of enteroparasites in free-ranging Callithrix spp. from different municipalities in Paraná state, Brazil, from a One Health approach. METHODS: Faecal samples of 37 specimens of C. penicillata, C. jacchus, and hybrid species were analyzed. RESULTS: The most frequent parasite forms observed inclu

Use of stable isotope ratio analysis to investigate the biology and clinical significance of seal parasites.

Stranded seals are often infected with a broad range of parasites, although whether they are the cause of significant morbidity or an incidental finding is usually unclear. In this study we used stable isotope ratio analysis, a method frequently used to investigate food webs, to explore the extent to which common seal parasites feed directly on host tissue and fluids or absorb host-derived metabolites, which in turn may give an indication of their potential impact on the host's health. The trophic discrimination factor Δ15N for the nasal mite, Halarachne halichoeri, was mostly positive, rangin
