CONTEXT: To stabilize the humeral head within the glenoid fossa during arm elevation, the rotator cuff muscles may contribute through internal and external rotation. The main purpose of the current study was to compare the acromiohumeral distance between athletes with primary subacromial impingement syndrome who received progressive resistance exercises consisting of either shoulder internal or external rotation.
DESIGN: A randomized and controlled clinical study.
METHODS: Thirty athletes with primary subacromial impingement syndrome were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 experimental gro…

PURPOSE: In large-to-massive rotator cuff tears (MRCTs), incorporating the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) with arthroscopic partial rotator cuff and margin convergence can improve clinical outcomes and preserve the acromio-humeral interval (AHI) during mid-term follow-up. The purpose of this study was to evaluate mid-term clinical and radiological outcomes of arthroscopic biceps-incorporating rotator cuff repair with partial release of the LHBT and footprint medialization through the Neviaser portal in MRCTs.
METHODS: This study enrolled 107 patients (38 males and 69 females, mean age:

PURPOSE: Glenohumeral instability accounts for 23% of all shoulder injuries among collegiate athletes. The apprehension position-combined sh … instrumented robotic system applied pseudorandom, anterior-posterior displacements to translate the humeral head within the glenoid fossa and measured the resultant forces as participants produced isometric shoulder torques. Measurements were made in neutral abduction (90° abduction/0° external rotation) and apprehension (90° abduction/90° external rotation) p …

PURPOSE: Rheumatoid arthritis has been associated with poor clinical outcomes in hemiarthroplasty and unconstrained total shoulder arthropla … . Eighteen (24%) glenoid components required augmentation with corticocancellous autograft from the humeral head. There were two cases of glenoid loosening with gross changes in position. Patients experienced significant pain relief with a 92% satisfaction rate. Shoulder elevation and external rotation improved from 65 and 21 degrees pre-operatively to 138 and …

DESIGN: Interrupted time-series study comparing management and neonatal outcome of births complicated by shoulder dystocia over three 4-year periods: (i) Pre-training (1996-99), (ii) Early training (2001-04), and (iii) Late training (2009-12).
SETTING: Southmead Hospital, Bristol, UK, with approximately 6000 births per annum.
POPULATION: Infants and their mothers who experienced shoulder dystocia.
METHOD: A bi-monthl

The SST was manually segmented from the footprint to the medial humeral head in the coronal and sagittal planes and divided into six clinically relevant subregions. Mean T2 values and inter- and intra-rater reliability were assessed.

AIM: To investigate whether the finger movement at birth is a better predictor of the brachial plexus birth injury.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study reviewing pre-surgical records of 87 patients with residual obstetric brachial plexus palsy in study 1. Posterior subluxation of the humeral head (PHHA), and glenoid retroversion were measured from computed tomography or Magnetic resonance imaging, and correlated with the finger movement at birth. The study 2 consisted of 141 obstetric brachial plexus injury patients, who underwent primary surgeries and/or secondary surgery at the Texa…

We retrospectively reviewed 19 patients (19 shoulders) in whom advanced glenohumeral arthritis developed after anterior instability repair. The anterior instability repairs included 4 Bristow, 4 Putti-Platt (2 in combination with other procedures), 4 Magnuson-Stack, 2 Bankart, and 5 other anterior capsulorrhaphies. Seventeen of the shoulders were treated with arthroplasty: 15 with total shoulder replacement and 2 with humeral head replacement, at a mean age of 45 years (range, 32-69 years). Two patients did not have surgical treatment. The mean internal rotation contracture was 58 degrees (15 …

BACKGROUND: Massive rotator cuff tears (RCTs) with significant retraction are challenging due to the high retear rates and limitations associated with existing repair techniques. Biceps tendon rerouting has recently emerged as an effective reinforcement technique for massive RCTs, particularly in achieving low retear rates.
INDICATIONS: Arthroscopic RCT repair with proximal biceps tendon rerouting is a viable option for nonarthritic, active patients with massive, retracted RCTs for whom nonoperative treatment has failed and the long head of the biceps tendon is intact.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION:

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a serious complication of high-dose steroid therapy for pediatric patients with leukemia/lymphoma. A … The most common sites of AVN in the tibia, humerus, and femur are proximal tibial metaphysis (89%), humeral head epiphysis (86%), and distal femoral metaphysis (68%) and epiphysis (68%), respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: This analysis demonstrates that AVN in leukemia/lymphoma patients on steroid therapy has a clear predilection for specific locations in long bones. …

BACKGROUND: Treating recurrent anterior shoulder instability in participants in collision sports, patients with capsulolabral defects, and p … ion to closer to the intact state. Doubling the biceps load leveraged the sling effect, pulling the humeral head farther posterior-superiorly, but this was not enough to overcome the effect of a 20% subcritical glenoid bone defect.
CONCLUSIONS: In a serial dislocation model, LHBT effectively stabilized the glenohumeral joint in a simulated chronic instability …

PURPOSE: Several surgical techniques have been used for shoulder fracture treatment. In 1989, Kapandji described the 'Palm Tree technique' for the first time, consisting of inserting three K-bent wires through a bone hole created under deltoid muscle insertion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical and radiographic results of proximal humerus fractures treated by a modified "palm tree technique."
METHODS: From August 2021 to March 2025, 43 patients with proximal humerus fractures underwent surgical treatment using the modified Palm Tree technique. The mean age was 61.8 years (ran

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the biomechanical effect of subacromial spacer (physically depressing the humeral head) and magnets (concavity compression restoration) in massive rotator cuff tear (MRCT). We assessed the influence on superior stability by employing the subacromial spacer (the spacer effect) and magnets (concavity compression effect) separately or in combination in MRCT.
METHODS: A customized shoulder testing system tested 7 fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders. The prosthesis implantation was performed prior to all experimental conditions. Each specimen underwent the …

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have reported an unacceptable implant-related complication rate in proximal humeral fractures treated with locking plates, particularly in older patients. Our objective was to compare the fracture fixation failure rates in elderly patients, after a dedicated technique for locking plate fixation with cement augmentation or without it.
METHODS: A total of 168 open reduction and internal fixation with locking plates were performed for complex proximal humerus fractures by a single surgeon in 136 women and 32 men older than 65 years of age (average 76 years). Treatmen
