Permeability Measures Predict Hemorrhagic Transformation after Ischemic Stroke.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine the diagnostic utility of existing predictors of any hemorrhagic transformation (HT) and compare them with new perfusion imaging permeability measures in ischemic stroke patients receiving alteplase only. METHODS: A pixel-based analysis of pretreatment CT perfusion (CTP) was undertaken to define the optimal CTP permeability thresholds to predict the likelihood of HT. We then compared previously proposed predictors of HT using regression analyses and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis to produce an area under the curve (AUC). We compared AUCs using

Objective Indirect Assessment of Transverse Ligament Competence Using Quantitative Analysis of 3-Dimensional Segmented Flexion-Extension Computed Tomography Scan.

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of transverse ligament (TL) competence in patients with suspected atlantoaxial instability is performed via indirect radiograph measurements or direct TL visualization on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Interpretation of these images can be limited by unique patient anatomy or imaging technique variability. We report a novel technique for evaluating TL competence using flexion-extension computed tomography (feCT) scan with 3-dimensional (3D) segmentation and quantitative analysis. METHODS: feCT scans of 11 patients were segmented to create 3D surface models. Six patien

A novel 3D evaluation method for assessing bone to bone relationships in clubfoot.

INTRODUCTION: The Fibrosis‑4 (FIB‑4) index, a widely used noninvasive marker of hepatic fibrosis, shows prognostic value beyond hepatology, yet its broader systemic and health care implications remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to characterize the systemic disease burden, health care utilization, and long‑term outcomes linked to elevated FIB‑4 score. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a large‑scale, matched-cohort study using real‑world data from a nationally representative health care provider. Adults aged 40-80 years with available laboratory data were included, comprising 21 540 indivi

Axillary Lymph Node Evaluation Utilizing Convolutional Neural Networks Using MRI Dataset.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of convolutional neural network (CNN) in predicting axillary lymph node metastasis, using a breast MRI dataset. An institutional review board (IRB)-approved retrospective review of our database from 1/2013 to 6/2016 identified 275 axillary lymph nodes for this study. Biopsy-proven 133 metastatic axillary lymph nodes and 142 negative control lymph nodes were identified based on benign biopsies (100) and from healthy MRI screening patients (42) with at least 3 years of negative follow-up. For each breast MRI, axillary lymph node was identified on fir

Usefulness of MRI-CBCT image registration in the evaluation of temporomandibular joint internal derangement by novice examiners.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether novice examiners can more reliably determine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk derangements with the use of fused images of magnetic resonance imaging and cone beam computed tomography (MRI-CBCT) compared with MRI images alone. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty dental students with minimal exposure to TMJ imaging received a 30-minute calibration session in which TMJ diagnostic imaging and the normal anatomy of the TMJ internal derangement were explained. The students evaluated the disk positions of 16 TMJs in two sets of images (MRI images alone and MRI-CBCT images) randomly

Appendiceal diameter: CT versus sonographic measurements.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound and CT are the dominant imaging modalities for assessment of suspected pediatric appendicitis, and the most commonly applied diagnostic criterion for both modalities is appendiceal diameter. The classically described cut-off diameter for the diagnosis of appendicitis is 6 mm when using either imaging modality. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the fallacy of using the same cut-off diameter for both CT and US in the diagnosis of appendicitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients younger than 18 years who underwent both US and CT of the appendix

Computed tomography dose optimization.

Use of computed tomography (CT) as a medical diagnostic imaging tool has increased in recent decades because of its technical advances in data acquisition speed and image reconstruction technology. The increased reliance on CT was accompanied by increased patient exposure to ionizing radiation, however, and concerns among radiologic professionals and the public regarding CT dose resulted in increasing attention to dose reduction. Research and education efforts have addressed many of these concerns, and radiologic technologists play a critical role in optimizing image quality and radiation dose

Morphometric analysis of the lumbar intervertebral foramen in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis by multidetector-row computed tomography.

PURPOSE: How the lumbar neural foramina are affected by segmental deformities in patients in whom degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) is unknown. Here, we used multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) to measure the morphology of the foramina in three dimensions, which allowed us to elucidate the relationships between foraminal morphology and segmental deformities in DLS. METHODS: In 77 DLS patients (mean age, 69.4) and 19 controls (mean age, 69), the foraminal height (FH), foraminal width (FW), posterior disc height (PDH), interval between the pedicle and superior articular process (P-SA

Quantification of brain lesions using interactive automated software.

We developed an interactive program, Analysis of Brain Lesions (ABLe) so that researchers studying the effects of brain lesions on cognition could have a user-friendly tool that could quantitatively characterize such lesions. The program was prepared in Tcl/Tk and will run on any UNIX or PC LINUX platform with the MEDx medical imaging software package. The ABLe is almost completely automated and determines the brain lesion size as well as which cytoarchitectonic brain regions (Brodmann areas) are contained within the boundaries of the lesion. Lesion data from multiple subjects can be grouped t

Variable angle gray level co-occurrence matrix analysis of T2 relaxation time maps reveals degenerative changes of cartilage in knee osteoarthritis: Oulu knee osteoarthritis study.

BACKGROUND: Texture analysis methods based on gray level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) can be optimized to probe the spatial correspondence information from knee MRI T2 maps and the changes caused by osteoarthritis, and thus possibly leading to a more sensitive characterization of osteoarthritic cartilage. Curvature of the cartilage surfaces combined with the low image resolution in relation to cartilage thickness set special requirements for an effective texture analysis tool. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To introduce a novel implementation of GLCM algorithm optimized for cartilage texture analysis;

Navigator-Based Slice Tracking for Multiband Accelerated Liver DWI.

PURPOSE: Clinical liver diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) suffers from long measurement time and respiratory motion. In this study, we employ a navigator-based slice tracking technique (NAV) to prospectively compensate for respiratory motion in multiband (MB) accelerated liver DWI. METHODS: A single gradient-echo slice readout at the location of the diaphragm along the inferior-superior direction was acquired as a navigator. Navigator acquisition and fat suppression were inserted before each transverse imaging slice of the readouts of a 2D spin-echo EPI based DWI sequence, with 20 repeats incl

Non-contrast free-running high-resolution volumetric multi-slab cardiac cine MRI at 3 T.

Free-running self-gated 3D cardiac cine imaging is highly desirable for volumetric, high-resolution, breath-hold-free assessment of left ventricular (LV) function. However, its implementation at 3 T remains challenging due to specific absorption rate (SAR) constraints and reduced myocardium-blood contrast. In this study, we propose a novel non-contrast, free-running, self-gated 3D gradient-echo (GRE) cine sequence for 3 T imaging, which acquires multi-slab data using a pseudo-radial Cartesian trajectory with a 1.5 mm slice thickness. To address respiratory motion, a locally low-rank motion-cor
