Larvicidal, antioxidant and biotoxicity assessment of (2-(((2-ethyl-2 methylhexyl)oxy)carbonyl)benzoic acid isolated from Bacillus pumilus against Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi and Culex quinquefasciatus.

Mosquitoes are a vector for many dreadful diseases known for their public health concern. The continued use of synthetic insecticides against vector control has led to serious environmental impacts, human health problems, and the development of insect resistance. Hence, alternative mosquito control methods are needed to protect the environment and human health. In the present study, the bioefficacy of (2-(((2-ethyl-2 methylhexyl)oxy)carbonyl) benzoic acid isolated from Bacillus pumilus were tested against Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles stephensi. The isolated bioactive com

Mechanism of Resistance in Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek var. radiata] to bruchids, Callosobruchus spp. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae).

Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek var. radiata] is an important pulse crop in Asia, and is consumed as dry seeds and as bean sprouts. It is an excellent source of digestible protein. Bruchids [Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) and Callosobruchus maculatus (F.)] are the important pests of mungbean and cause damage in the field and in storage. Bruchid infestation reduces the nutritional and market value of the grain and renders seeds unfit for human consumption, agricultural and commercial uses. These pests are controlled mainly by fumigation with highly toxic chemicals such as carbon disulfid

Evolutionary and dispersal history of Triatoma infestans, main vector of Chagas disease, by chromosomal markers.

Chagas disease, one of the most important vector-borne diseases in the Americas, is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted to humans by insects of the subfamily Triatominae. An effective control of this disease depends on elimination of vectors through spraying with insecticides. Genetic research can help insect control programs by identifying and characterizing vector populations. In southern Latin America, Triatoma infestans is the main vector and presents two distinct lineages, known as Andean and non-Andean chromosomal groups, that are highly differentiated by the amount of heterochro…

What drives community adherence to indoor residual spraying (IRS) against malaria in Manhiça district, rural Mozambique: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control remains a challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2006, the World Health Organization (WHO) reinforced the recommendation of indoor residual spraying (IRS) with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) to reduce malaria transmission. The National Malaria Control Programme has been reporting high coverage rates of IRS in Mozambique. It is important to establish to what extent these rates are a reflection of community acceptability, and to explore the factors associated with adherence, in order to recommend suitable approaches for interventions of this nature. OBJECTIVE: To

Detection and characterization of Wolbachia infections in Wuchereria bancrofti (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) var. pacifica and Aedes (Stegomyia) polynesiensis (Diptera: Culicidae).

Despite control programs based on mass drug administration (MDA) of microfilaricidal compounds, Bancroftian lymphatic filariasis remains a problem in French Polynesia. For an alternative strategy to MDA, we investigated the potential role of Wolbachia to control filarial transmission. Wolbachia are intracellular alpha-proteobacteria endosymbionts that infect a broad range of insects and nematodes. These bacteria have a suspected role in the pathogenesis of filariasis. They also may be useful in mosquito control through cytoplasmic incompatibility. To detect and characterize these bacteria in t

Advancing spatial repellents for malaria control: effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a spatial repellent under operational use in Northern Uganda-study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Spatial repellents (SRs) have been widely used for the prevention of mosquito bites, and preliminary findings suggest efficacy against both malaria (1) and Aedes-borne viruses (2) but their effectiveness in reducing mosquito-borne diseases under operational use has never been evaluated. SRs have the potential of being critical tools in the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases in contexts where typical vector control strategies, such as insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying, are inaccessible or underutilized such as among displaced persons or in emergency rel

Cyhalothrin--a novel acaricidal and insecticidal synthetic pyrethroid for the control of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) and the buffalo fly (Haematobia irritans exigua).

Cyhalothrin, a novel synthetic pyrethroid, was evaluated for control of the major resistant strains of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) and for control of the buffalo fly (Haematobia irritans exigua) on cattle. In regulated treatment trials with 0.007% cyhalothrin, greater than 99% control of the Biarra, Mackay, Mt Alford, DDT resistant and Ulam cattle tick strains was obtained. Protective-period trials were conducted in which animals which had been sprayed with 0.007% cyhalothrin then received a continuing heavy challenge of the organophosphate-resistant Biarra tick strain. The first sem

Susceptibility and resistance to insecticides of Chagas disease vectors.

Chemical control of Chagas disease vectors appears to be the best practical way to reduce the incidence of the disease. DDT was initially tested in the 1950s for the campaigns of control of Chagas disease vectors. Its low level of effectiveness against triatomine caused the failure of these control actions. HCH was then introduced in the southern cone and Dieldrin in the north of Latinoamerica. Starting in the late 1960s anticholinesterasic organophosphorus and carbamate compounds were introduced in the control of Chagas vectors. The use of pyrethroid compounds began in 1980. This family of in

Association of low concentrations of pyriproxyfen and spinosad as an environment-friendly strategy to rationalize Aedes aegypti control programs.

The association of low concentrations of pyriproxyfen and Spinosad, a naturally-occurring insecticide, was evaluated as an environment-friendly strategy to rationalize Aedes aegypti control programs by reducing larvicide consumption, saving financial costs and increasing residual effect against mosquitoes development. Firstly, the ecotoxicological parameters of the mixture was performed on non-target species Daphnia magna and the results confirmed that the low concentrations used in this larvicide mixture were not able to alter the reproductive parameters of chronically exposed microcrustacean

An Introduction to the Book.

Chitin is a linear biopolymer composed of β-1,4-linked N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), and an essential component in exoskeleton of insects and crustaceans, the egg shells of parasitic nematodes, and the fungal cell wall. Since the chitin-containing organisms often threaten human health, food safety, and agricultural production, it has been highly desirable to control the hazardous chitin-containing organisms. This book will provide researchers and students with information on the recent research progress about the biology of chitin-containing organisms and their cross-talk with other organisms.

Allocrine modulation of feeding behavior by the Sex Peptide of Drosophila.

Mating elicits a dramatic reprogramming of female behavior in numerous insect species. In Drosophila, this postmating response (PMR) comprises increased egg-laying rate and reduced sexual receptivity and is controlled by the products of the male accessory glands, a family of approximately 80 small peptides transferred in the male seminal fluid . Here, we show that copulation strongly stimulates female food intake. Remarkably, this change is abolished if the males lack a single, small seminal protein, the Sex Peptide (SP). Ectopic expression of SP in virgin females mimics the effect of mating o

Rapid and convergent evolution of Wolbachia genomes in mosquito cell culture.

Wolbachia are widespread bacterial symbionts of arthropods that manipulate host reproduction and can confer fitness benefits, such as protection against viral pathogens. Their self-spreading ability coupled with their antiviral effect has been harnessed in health programmes to curb the transmission of dengue virus by Aedes mosquitoes. In this context, a better understanding of evolutionary dynamics over short timescales is critical to inform and improve the efficacy of Wolbachia-based disease control interventions. Moreover, experimental evolution of Wolbachia may provide a powerful approach f

Sterile insect technique for suppression of endemic Aedes albopictus in urban Reunion Island: A pilot trial of technical feasibility and entomological impact.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) has progressed from theory to a validated vector control strategy for Aedes-borne diseases, including dengue and chikungunya. We assessed the feasibility and effectiveness of SIT for suppressing Aedes albopictus in small-scale urban environments on Reunion Island. METHODS: From July 2021 to September 2022, over 10 million Ae. albopictus males sterilized as pupae with 40 Gy X-rays were released at a 20-hectare pilot site. Weekly releases ranged from 60,000 to 275,000 males (3000-13,750 per hectare). Outcomes were monitored using ovitrap surveillan

Molecular cloning and expression under cold stress of two heat shock proteins from Dastarcus helophoroides (Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae).

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) maintain cellular homeostasis and regulate immune responses across species. HSP90 stabilises and activates regulatory proteins, while HSP70 facilitates protein folding and prevents aggregation. In this study, the complete cDNA sequences of Dastarcus helophoroides - HSP70, HSP90, and β-actin (used as a reference for real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction) - were obtained using rapid amplification of cDNA ends-polymerase chain reaction, and the expression of HSP70 and HSP90 under cold stress was analysed. The full-length cDNA of HSP90 contains a 2346-bp open

Optimal control applied to Zika virus epidemics in Colombia and Puerto Rico.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mostly non-lethal disease in humans transmitted by mosquitoes or humans that can produce severe brain defects such as microcephaly in babies and Guillain-Barré syndrome in elderly adults. The use of optimal control strategies involving information campaigns about insect repellents and condoms alongside an available safe and effective vaccine can prevent the number of infected humans with ZIKV. A system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is formulated for the transmission dynamics of ZIKV in the presence of three control strategies to evaluate the impact of vari

Impact of vector control actions in the abundance of Lutzomyia longipalpis in Montes Claros, Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic to many states in Brazil. To prevent further expansion of the disease, the Brazilian Ministry of Health adopted integrated measures through the Program of Surveillance and Control of Visceral Leishmaniasis (PSCVL), whose actions include the diagnosis and euthanasia of seropositive dogs (the main domestic reservoirs), the use of residual insecticides, environmental management (EM) to control vector population (mainly Lutzomyia longipalpis phlebotomine), rigorous epidemiological surveillance, and health education. The present study was conducted in areas wi

Vector-borne diseases.

Vector-borne diseases have been the scourge of man and animals since the beginning of time. Historically, these are the diseases that caused the great plagues such as the 'Black Death' in Europe in the 14th Century and the epidemics of yellow fever that plagued the development of the New World. Others, such as Nagana, contributed to the lack of development in Africa for many years. At the turn of the 20th Century, vector-borne diseases were among the most serious public and animal health problems in the world. For the most part, these diseases were controlled by the middle of the 20th Century

Molecular Identification of Palmistichus elaeisis, Tetrastichus howardi, Trichospilus diatraeae and Trichogramma pretiosum (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea)-Important Biocontrol Agents.

Parasitoid wasps play a fundamental role in the biological control of pests. However, their morphological identification may be limited due to their small size and the high morphological similarity between species. Our objective was to identify specific genomic variants of the target species Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993, Tetrastichus howardi (Olliff, 1893), Trichospilus diatraeae Cherian & Margabandhu, 1942, and Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, 1879, (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) by whole-genomic sequencing. Parasitoids were collected from their hosts and established in the laborat

Enhanced control efficacy of spinosad on corn borer using polylactic acid encapsulated mesoporous silica nanoparticles as a smart delivery system.

Asion corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee)) is one of the most important factors affecting the normal growth and yield of corn. However, chemical control methods currently in use cause severe pollution. In the present study, aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs-NH2) and polylactic acid (PLA) were used as the carrier and capping agent respectively to construct an insect gut microenvironment nano-response system that loaded spinosad, a biopesticide used to control O. furnacalis. The resulting spinosad@MSNs-PLA demonstrated high loading capacity (38.6 %) and improved photostability
