[The epidemiological significance of human lice in relation to the characteristics of their parasitism].

Epidemiological significance of clothes and head louse is determined first of all by the type of "parasite-host" connection. Clothes louse has an immediate contact with man only during bloodsucking, it dwells in clothes, consumes big portions of blood and has great productivity. Temperature factor is very important for Pediculus corporis. If the man's temperature is growing the louse will abandon him. The comparison of various literature data and proper author's information has shown that Pediculus capitis didn't play a significant role in epidemic typhoid malady taking into account the modern

Yellow mercuric oxide: a treatment of choice for phthiriasis palpebrarum.

Thirty-five patients presenting with phthiriasis palpebrarum were all treated with a regimen of 1% yellow oxide of mercury ointment four times daily for 14 days. At the conclusion of treatment there was complete resolution of the signs and symptoms of the disease. No side effects due to the treatment were reported or detected. We have shown that 1% mercuric oxide ointment is both a safe and effective treatment for phthiriasis palpebrarum. We recommend it as the treatment of choice.

[Methods of reducing the amount of pediculocide residues on bed linens to safe levels].

The means for reducing the residue of organophosphorous and pyrethrin pediculicides on the fabric to safety levels have been developed due to the use of gas and liquid chromatography. The proposed procedures include linen washing after its pediculicidal treatment. Optimal conditions for the removal of the above substances from the fabric have been set forth. Actual quantity of pediculicides on the fabric after its treatment has been identified.

Eradication of head lice with a single treatment.

Single application of Nix (permethrin 1% creme rinse) and Rid were compared as treatments for Pediculosis capitis in 435 patients, the majority of whom were children. Seven days after the treatment, 98 per cent of the permethrin-treated and 85 per cent of the Rid-treated patients were free of lice. At 14 days, prior to nit removal, 96 per cent of the permethrin-treated and 62 per cent of the Rid-treated patients were still lice free. Seventeen (7 per cent) permethrin-treated and 32 (16 per cent) Rid-treated patients were reported to have adverse experiences.

The paleopathology of an Aleutian mummy.

A multidisciplinary team examined an Aleutian mummy from the collection of the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. The mummy, dating from the early 18th century, was of a middle-aged woman who had suffered from pulmonary and ear infections, atherosclerosis, pediculosis, and degenerative joint disease. Another finding was anthracosis, common in ancient bodies and related to indoor heating and cooking fires. Skeletal lead was not found, in contrast with the high levels seen in modern persons. No neoplasms were identified, again consistent with the r

POST-TREATMENT REACTIONS IN CATTLE DURING EXTENSIVE FIELD TESTS OF SYSTEMIC ORGANOPHOSPHATE INSECTICIDES.

Treatment, grub infestation, and post-treatment reaction data is given for 11,537 range-managed beef cattle, of all age classes, treated for grub and louse control with various systemic organophosphate insecticides during the period 1956 to 1964. Two cows died from perforation of the throat during administration of Trolene boluses. Of 6,858 calves, 71 showed adverse reactions with 4 dead. Of 4,679 cattle over one year of age, 3 showed adverse reactions with one death. No typical organophosphate poisoning occurred. One death resulted from a paraplegic reaction and necropsy showed spinal nerve d

Tick-borne pathogens in dogs, wild small mammals and their ectoparasites in the semi-arid Caatinga biome, northeastern Brazil.

Caatinga is a biome exclusive to the semiarid zone of Brazil, where studies on ticks and tick-borne diseases are scarce. Herein, we investigated the occurrence of Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Coxiella in wild mammals, domestic dogs and their ectoparasites using molecular and serological techniques. During 2014-2016, blood samples and ectoparasites were collected from 70 small mammals (51 rodents, 18 marsupials, 1 wild canid) and 147 domestic dogs in three areas of the Caatinga. Through serological analyses of domestic dogs of the three areas, 8 to 11 % were seropositive for Rickettsia rickettsii

Arthropod-borne diseases in homeless.

Homeless people are particularly exposed to ectoparasite. The living conditions and the crowded shelters provide ideal conditions for the spread of lice, fleas, ticks, and mites. Body lice have long been recognized as human parasites and although typically prevalent in rural communities in upland areas of countries close to the equator, it is now increasingly encountered in developed countries especially in homeless people or inner city economically deprived population. Fleas are widespread but are not adapted to a specific host and may occasionally bite humans. Most common fleas that parasite

From host to host, and continent to continent: Two phoresy-enabled Guimaraesiella hitchhiker louse species revealed by integrative taxonomy (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera).

The 'core Guimaraesiella' comprise a morphologically rather homogeneous group of avian chewing lice (Phthiraptera), most of which remain undescribed. Based on an integrative approach combining morphological characters and analyses of COI barcoding sequences, we here describe two new species within this group: Guimaraesiella impiger new species and Guimaraesiella stellana new species. Both species were collected from hippoboscid flies in Singapore, suggesting that they are capable of moving phoretically between hosts. In at least G. impiger, this was confirmed as louse specimens from another 30

Predicting the effectiveness of depth-based technologies to prevent salmon lice infection using a dispersal model.

Salmon lice is one of the major parasitic problems affecting wild and farmed salmonid species. The planktonic larval stages of these marine parasites can survive for extended periods without a host and are transported long distances by water masses. Salmon lice larvae have limited swimming capacity, but can influence their horizontal transport by vertical positioning. Here, we adapted a coupled biological-physical model to calculate the distribution of farm-produced salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) during winter in the southwest coast of Norway. We tested 4 model simulations to see which

Human identification by lice: A Next Generation Sequencing challenge.

Rapid and progressive advances in molecular biology techniques and the advent of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) have opened new possibilities for analyses also in the identification of entomological matrixes. Insects and other arthropods are widespread in nature and those found at a crime scene can provide a useful contribution to forensic investigations. Entomological evidence is used by experts to define the postmortem interval (PMI), which is essentially based on morphological recognition of the insect and an estimation of its insect life cycle stage. However, molecular genotyping methods

Behavioural adaptations of argulid parasites (Crustacea: Branchiura) to major challenges in their life cycle.

Fish lice (Argulus spp.) are obligate ectoparasites, which contrary to most aquatic parasites, retain the ability to swim freely throughout the whole of their life. In fish farms, they can quickly increase in numbers and without effective control cause argulosis, which results in the reduced growth and survival of their fish hosts. The morphology of Argulus spp, including their sensory organs, is suitable for both parasitism and free-swimming. By spending a considerable amount of time away from their host, these parasites risk being excessively dispersed, which could endanger mating success. H

A New Clade of African Body and Head Lice Infected by Bartonella quintana and Yersinia pestis-Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The human body louse is known as a vector for the transmission of three serious diseases-specifically, epidemic typhus, trench fever, and relapsing fever caused by Rickettsia prowazekii, Bartonella quintana, and Borrelia recurrentis, respectively-that have killed millions of people. It is also suspected in the transmission of a fourth pathogen, Yersinia pestis, which is the etiologic agent of plague. To date, human lice belonging to the genus Pediculus have been classified into three mitochondrial clades: A, B, and C. Here, we describe a fourth mitochondrial clade, Clade D, comprising head and

Organophosphate exposure with pseudocholinesterase deficiency.

A 36-year-old correctional officer was exposed to lice while at work and self-treated with chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate. The correctional officer applied chlorpyrifos to her entire body and did not wash it off for 8 to 12 hours. Eight hours after the initial application, the correctional officer developed abdominal cramps, diarrhea, sweating, excessive salivation, frequent urination, and increased bronchial secretions. After a phone consultation with the occupational health clinic, the correctional officer reported to the emergency department, was diagnosed with organophosphate toxicity, a

Amazonian head lice-specific genotypes are putatively pre-Columbian.

Head and body lice are strict obligate human ectoparasites with three mitochondrial phylotypes (A, B, and C). Using molecular methods for genotyping lice (Cytochrome b and multi-spacer typing), and comparing our results with all the sequences of human lice that were genotyped previously, we assessed the presence of a specific American genotype that most likely predates the Columbian era in head lice collected from Amazonia.

A new genus and species of Philopteridae (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) from the trumpeters (Aves: Gruiformes: Psophiidae).

A new chewing louse genus and species belonging to the Philopteridae, namely, Palmaellus inexpectatus n. gen., n. sp., is described. The new genus is distinguished from the other ischnoceran genera hitherto described by its peculiar characters of the dorsal anterior head plate with 2 postero-lateral projections, pterothorax and abdomen with scarce chaetotaxy, male genitalia with simple mesomere and paramere lacking inner digitiform projection, and the genital region of female with postero-vulvar plates bearing setae. It is a parasite of the trumpeters, an avian family endemic to South America'
