A pilot study for investigating the feasibility of supervised machine learning approaches for the classification of pedestrians struck by vehicles.

This research focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies to the problem of classifying vehicles involved in lethal pedestrian collisions. Specifically, the vehicle type is predicted on the basis of traumatic injury suffered by casualties, exploiting machine learning algorithms. In the present study, AI-assisted diagnosis was shown to have correct prediction about 70% of the time. In pedestrians struck by trucks, more severe injuries were appreciated in the facial skeleton, lungs, major airways, liver, and spleen as well as in the sternum/clavicle/rib complex, wher

Inheritance of rare functional GCKR variants and their contribution to triglyceride levels in families.

Significant resources have been invested in sequencing studies to investigate the role of rare variants in complex disease etiology. However … leterious variants were collectively associated with hypertriglyceridemia, but a range of in silico prediction algorithms showed little consistency between algorithms and poor agreement with functional data. We extended our study by obtaining sequence data on family members; however, functional variants did not co-segregate with triglyceride levels. Therefore, despite …

Current recommendations for laboratory testing and use of bone turnover markers in management of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a major health problem worldwide, and is projected to increase exponentially due to the aging of the population. The absolute fracture risk in individual subjects is calculated by the use of algorithms which include bone mineral density (BMD), age, gender, history of prior fracture and other risk factors. This review describes the laboratory investigations into osteoporosis which include serum calcium, phosphate, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase and 25-hydroxyvitamin D and, additionally in men, testosterone. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is measured in patients with abnormal serum

A New Regularized Spatiotemporal Attention-Based LSTM with Application to Nitrogen Oxides Emission Prediction.

The data collected from complex process industries are usually time series with considerable nonlinearities and dynamics, as well as excessive redundancy. Moreover, there are temporal and spatial correlations between input variables and key performance variables. These characteristics bring great difficulties to data-driven modeling of the key performance variables. To overcome the problems, a new regularized spatiotemporal attention (STA)-based long short-term memory (LSTM) was developed. First, a standard LSTM network with an STA module was trained to capture the dynamic relationship between

Comparative Analysis of Temporal Difference Learning Methods to Learn General Value Functions of Lower-Limb Signals.

Millions of people in the United States suffer from paralysis, resulting in significant deficits in motor function. Restricted mobility due to these deficits and the lack of adaptive rehabilitative solutions make traversing complex and challenging terrains unsafe. Exoskeletons offer a promising solution, but their effectiveness could be greatly enhanced by incorporating reinforcement learning algorithms for real-time adaptation to changing environments and the user's unique gait biomechanics. This study explored different temporal difference learning methods for predicting signals recorded fro

Accurate proteome-wide prediction of enzymes and catalytic sites using graph deep learning and protein language model.

Identifying the enzyme functions of proteins and their catalytic residues is vital to our understanding of diverse cellular processes. However, existing frameworks that can concurrently determine the enzymatic functions and active sites of proteins are scarce, and still have much room for improvement in prediction performance. In this study, we present EC-LMGraph, a protein language model- and graph convolutional network-based framework to predict enzyme commission (EC) numbers from protein sequence features and structures, and saliency mapping to score representative residues attribute to the

PhageCGRNet: Integrating Chaos Game Representation of Genomes with Convolutional Neural Network for accurate phage host classification prediction.

Phages (or bacteriophages) play a critical role in microbial communities, and accurately predicting the hosts of phages is essential for understanding the dynamics of these viruses and their impact on bacterial populations. In the prediction of classification of phage hosts, feature extraction is a critical step that directly affects the accuracy of the predictions. Among the techniques used for feature extraction, k-mers are the most commonly employed method. Although many methods based on k-mers have been proposed, these methods typically use only the frequency information of k-mers as featu

Graph-Theoretical Approach for Predicting Physicochemical Properties of Stiff-Person Syndrome Drugs.

This work applies quantitative structure-property relationship analysis to examine molecular characteristics linked to stiffness person syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological condition marked by persistent muscle rigidity and spasmodic episodes. Topological indices such as Zagreb indices and their modification are employed to examine their correlations with key physicochemical properties. Linear, quadratic, exponential growth, and power curve fitting models are applied to identify the best correlations, focusing on the maximum F-statistic and the coefficient of determination R2. Furthermore, heat

Predicting local COVID-19 emergences: A time-series classification approach and value of data from social media, search engines, and neighbouring regions.

BACKGROUND: Early warning for known infectious disease threats use methods that focus on detection of outbreaks, often at large geographical scales. However, earlier warning, specifically at the onset of disease emergence (i.e., first case(s)) and at finer spatial scales could significantly improve timeliness and targeting of prevention and control efforts. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that a early classification time-series approach can predict COVID-19 emergence at a local jurisdictional level with a 10-day lead time. METHODS: To predict emergence with a 10-day lead time in Canadia

The complexity of pain in osteoarthritis.

Chronic pain is the hall-mark symptom of osteoarthritis (OA) and although several therapies are available, a sizeable number of patients do not gain adequate pain relief from these therapies. Predicting those patients who will not respond to current therapies remains a challenge. Although psychosocial, sensitivity, inflammation and genetic factors have been identified as pain mechanisms that predict response to pain therapy, none of these is a sufficiently strong predictor alone. An emerging approach to this challenge is the use of machine-learning algorithms that integrate several pain mechan
