TauG-guidance of dynamic balance control during gait initiation in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Impaired postural control has been reported in static conditions in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, but postural control in dynamic tasks have not yet been investigated. Thus, we investigated measurements from a force plate to evaluate dynamic balance control during gait initiation in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia compared to matched healthy controls. METHODS: Thirty female participants (10 per group) performed five trials of gait initiation. Center of pressure (CoP) trajectory of the initial weight shift onto the supporting foot in the mediola

Predicting the Perceptual Consequences of Hidden Hearing Loss.

Recent physiological studies in several rodent species have revealed that permanent damage can occur to the auditory system after exposure to a noise that produces only a temporary shift in absolute thresholds. The damage has been found to occur in the synapses between the cochlea's inner hair cells and the auditory nerve, effectively severing part of the connection between the ear and the brain. This synaptopathy has been termed hidden hearing loss because its effects are not thought to be revealed in standard clinical, behavioral, or physiological measures of absolute threshold. It is curren

Differential Involvement of the Agranular vs Granular Insular Cortex in the Acquisition and Performance of Choice Behavior in a Rodent Gambling Task.

Substance-related and addictive disorders, in particular gambling disorder, are known to be associated with risky decision-making behavior. Several neuroimaging studies have identified the involvement of the insular cortex in decision-making under risk. However, the extent of this involvement remains unclear and the specific contributions of two distinct insular subregions, the rostral agranular (RAIC) and the caudal granular (CGIC), have yet to be examined. Animals were trained to perform a rat gambling task (rGT), in which subjects chose between four options that differed in the magnitude an

Screening Mammography Rates in the Medicare Population before and after the 2009 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Guideline Change: An Interrupted Time Series Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine longitudinal trends in screening mammography utilization and the presence of any changes in utilization associated with the 2009 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guideline change. METHODS: We use 2005 through 2012 Medicare fee-for-service claims data for a 5% sample of randomly selected beneficiaries. The primary outcome is monthly mammography rate per 1,000 women. Two comparison outcomes are monthly Papanicolaou test rate and monthly routine eye examination rate. The statistical approach is interrupted time series with segmented regression analysis

Contraversive neglect? A modulation of visuospatial neglect in association with contraversive pushing.

OBJECTIVE: Contraversive pushing (CP) is a neurologic disorder characterized by a lateral postural imbalance. Pusher patients actively push toward their contralesional side due to a misperception of the body's orientation in relation to gravity. Although not every patient with CP suffers from spatial neglect (SN), both phenomena are highly correlated in right-hemispheric patients. The present study investigates whether peripersonal visuospatial functioning differs in neglect patients with versus without CP (NP+ vs. NP- patients). METHOD: Eighteen right-hemispheric stroke patients with SN were

Cholinergic systems are essential for late-stage maturation and refinement of motor cortical circuits.

Previous studies reported that early postnatal cholinergic lesions severely perturb early cortical development, impairing neuronal cortical migration and the formation of cortical dendrites and synapses. These severe effects of early postnatal cholinergic lesions preclude our ability to understand the contribution of cholinergic systems to the later-stage maturation of topographic cortical representations. To study cholinergic mechanisms contributing to the later maturation of motor cortical circuits, we first characterized the temporal course of cortical motor map development and maturation i

Protracted exercise without overt neuromuscular fatigue influences cortical excitability.

The authors' aim was to determine the cortical mechanisms that underlie the transition from effective performance to its disruption. They thus used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to study changes of corticospinal excitability after a motor exercise that did not produce overt or perceived neuromuscular fatigue. Forty-four subjects performed either 5 or 10 min of repetitive finger movements paced by tones at 2 Hz, a frequency below the spontaneous movement rate. Changes of corticospinal excitability were assessed with TMS at rest and during motor response preparation (premovement facili

Shoulder joint loading and posture during medicine cart pushing task.

Excessive physical loads and awkward shoulder postures during pushing and pulling are risk factors for shoulder pain. Pushing a medicine cart is a major component of a work shift for nurses and medical assistants in hospitals and other health care facilities. A laboratory experiment was conducted to examine the effects of common factors (e.g., lane congestion, cart load stability, floor surface friction) on shoulder joint moment and shoulder elevation angle of participants during cart pushing. Participants pushed a medicine cart on straight tracks and turning around right-angle corners. Peak s

Amplitude and timing of somatosensory cortex activity in task-specific focal hand dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: Task-specific focal hand dystonia (tspFHD) is a movement disorder diagnosed in individuals performing repetitive hand behaviors. The extent to which processing anomalies in primary sensory cortex extend to other regions or across the two hemispheres is presently unclear. METHODS: In response to low/high rate and novel tactile stimuli on the affected and unaffected hands, magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used to elaborate activity timing and amplitude in the primary somatosensory (S1) and secondary somatosensory/parietal ventral (S2/PV) cortices. MEG and clinical performance measure

Timing of anticipatory muscle tensing control: responses before and after expected impact.

It is widely accepted that human motor control is anticipatory in nature. Previous studies have used electromyography (EMG) to examine muscle responses to falling objects and identified anticipatory muscle tensing (AMT) as a spike in activation that occurs prior to object impact. Some studies have suggested that humans use an internal model of gravity to mediate precisely timed AMT responses. The present study further examines predictive motor control through the analysis of AMT during an object catching task. For some trials, participants watched an object falling toward the hand; for other t

Brain correlates of risky decision-making.

Understanding the neurocognitive basis of risk-taking behavior is an important issue, especially in economic decision-making. Classical behavioral studies have shown that risk-attitude changes across different contexts, but little is so far known about the brain correlates of processing of outcomes across such context shifts. In this study, EEG was recorded while subjects performed a gambling task. Participants could choose between a risky and a safer option, within two different contexts: one in which options yielded gains and losses of the same magnitude (Zero Expected Value context) and ano

Functional assessment in patients with osteoporotic wrist fractures treated with external fixation: a review of randomized trials.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a chronic and progressive condition that leads to decreased bone mass and skeletal fragility which may result in fractures, disability, pain, deformity and even death. Fractures of the wrist are the most common symptomatic fracture related to osteoporosis in which up to 80% of the persons with this fracture type have low bone mass. External fixation is minimally-invasive and is used in particular for the treatment of displaced, unstable fractures. OBJECTIVE: The present systematic review will present functional outcome assessment in randomized controlled trials i

The cognitive-enhancing properties of modafinil are limited in non-sleep-deprived middle-aged volunteers.

Modafinil is a selective wakefulness-promoting agent that has been shown to enhance cognitive performance under conditions of sleep deprivation but which has equivocal effects in normal young volunteers. In a double-blind parallel group design study, 45 non-sleep-deprived middle-aged volunteers (20 men and 25 women, aged 50-67 years) were randomly allocated to receive two capsules containing placebo, 100 or 200 mg modafinil, and 3 h later they completed 100 mm visual analogue scales of mood and bodily symptoms, before and after an extensive battery of cognitive tests [pen and paper and the Cam

Analysis of perisaccadic field potentials in the occipitotemporal pathway during active vision.

Eye movement potentials (EMPs) associated with saccades appear in both subcortical and cortical structures of the primate visual system. In this study, EMPs are recorded across sites in the occipitotemporal (OT) pathway of monkeys performing a pattern-recognition task. We characterize pair recordings of saccade-triggered local field potentials (LFPs) in early extrastriate and inferotemporal regions of the ventral visual pathway using time-frequency spectrograms. Parameters of the spectrograms, including the centroids of identified regions of interest in the time-frequency plane, are extracted

The effects of single-dose fexofenadine, diphenhydramine, and placebo on cognitive performance in flight personnel.

BACKGROUND: Sedation and functional impairments are side effects associated with the use of first-generation antihistamines that preclude their use in aviation. Selected second-generation antihistamines do not have such side effects and have been proposed for use in aircrew. METHODS: Forty-two healthy naval aviation personnel served as subjects in this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study. Subjective drowsiness, cognitive performance, and vigilance were measured under three conditions: 180 mg fexofenadine (F), 50 mg diphenhydramine (D) as a positive control, or placebo

Use of pharmacological challenges to disclose neurobehavioral deficits.

Delineation of the neurotoxic effects of various environmental agents is often complicated by the considerable compensatory capacity of the central nervous system (CNS). Moreover, the degree to which such compensation occurs may be critical when one is examining dosages near the threshold for biological effect. A current approach has been to use pharmacological agents to unmask deficits that are reflected in performance on subsequent behavioral tasks. This noninvasive manipulation may also provide insight into the underlying neurochemical substrates of the CNS insult. This procedure has been s

Contributions of monotic intelligibility to dichotic performance.

The contributions of monotic intelligibility to the right ear advantage for speech presented dichotically were examined in 3 experiments. The first experiment was mainly a replication of an earlier study by Speaks and Bissonette. Signal level in the right ear (RE) was attenuated and, separately, signal level in the left ear was amplified relative to 4 different reference intensities. Dichotic performance was not sensitive to absolute interaural-intensitive differences, but rather to something approaching an absolute sound pressure level. Thus, the RE advantage was affected only when signal lev

NMR Crystallography Structure Determinations with 1H Chemical Shifts. GIPAW DFT Calculation Quality Can Be Substantially Degraded, but Nearly Identical Outputs Relative to Benchmark Computations Are Obtained: Why and So What?

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) crystallography may be used in various solid-state structural characterization tasks. For organic compounds in this context, proton isotropic chemical shifts [δiso(1H)] are routinely used. It is typical to pair experimentally measured proton δiso values with δiso values that were computationally generated from crystal structure models. This can yield a δiso(1H) root-mean-squared deviation (RMSD) value for each crystal structure model. In this study, we monitor the way in which gauge including projector augmented wave (GIPAW) density functional theory (DFT) comp
