The experiments have been performed on 24 guinea pigs (48 labyrinthes), 6 of them--control and 18 have been subjected to noise (one octava) with the average geometrical in diaposone of 2,000 Hz, at intensity level 100 dB. Six animals are subjected to a single effect for 6 h and 12--to repeated effect during 6 days running, 4-6 h daily. Isolation of both the vestibular and the cochlear parts of the membranous labyrinth is performed simultaneously. This gives a possibility to study all the receptors of the internal ear as a whole. Certain ultrastructural changes in all the vestibular receptors b

Gentamicin application to the middle ear may relieve Meniere's disease, presumably by reducing endolymph secretion by the dark cells. To explore this possibility, the ears of adult cats were treated with daily intratympanic infusions of gentamicin until ataxia occurred. The temporal bones of these cats were then examined using electron microscopy. A 3 per cent solution of gentamicin resulted in ataxia after four treatments. Acute dark cell damage to basal infoldings seen after one month persisted at six months. Treatment with a 0.3 per cent solution required 15 and 21 days to effect ataxia and

The pathology of congenital hearing loss is as varied as the etiologies. Severe external ear anomalies, such as microtia, and middle ear defects have a significant incidence of accompanying inner ear aplasias, more often of the vestibular than of the cochlear end-organs. Classic inner ear aplasias are discussed, including Michel, Mondini, Alexander and Scheibe. A case illustrating close resemblance between a genetically induced Scheibe malformation and rubella inner ear deformities is present. A variety of ear disorders acquired during intrauterine or neonatal life, including cytomegalic inclu

After clinical examination of 104 patients with multiple sclerosis sensory-motor dysfunctions of the extremities turned out to be the predominant symptoms. Hypacusis, tinnitus and dizziness were mentioned by less than 15% of the patients. The investigation of the vestibular system showed often an enhanced caloric reaction and dysfunctions of the optokinetic mystagmus as well as the eye tracking test. Moreover the threshold for temperature and gustatory sensations was often enhanced. Hypacusis was found only in a few patients, in less than 30% the SISI and the tone decay test indicated neuronal

The authors present two unusual operative findings during surgery for stapedo-vestibular ankylosis, of which no similar cases would appear to be found in the literature. The first case posed the problem of stapedo-vestibular ankylosis as a sequel of clinically latent otitis, the only manifestations of which were radiological opacity of the mastoid and an area of osteitis of the promontory, still active, in the absence of any other progressive inflammatory phenomena or sequelae. Surgery required curettage and opening of the promontory, associated with total stapedectomy and a Teflon-inter-posit

Preoperative vestibular function was studied in 56 patients undergoing the endolymphatic subarachnoid shunt procedure for Ménière's disease by electronystagmographic recording of bithermal air caloric stimulation. Fifty-two percent had normal vestibular function while 48% had a reduced vestibular response on the affected side using 20% difference as being significant. Best results of surgery with relief of vertigo were found in the group of patients with normal preoperative vestibular function (82%) while the group with reduced vestibular response preoperatively showed 63% with a good result.

During everyday walking, secondary tasks such as looking at a phone or reading billboards on the streets often require deliberate head reorientation and attention allocation. However, the effect of these concurrent head-orientation demands on gait regulation and secondary task performance has not been systematically quantified. We addressed this gap using an immersive virtual reality (VR) framework in overground walking with distinct head-orientation tasks. Thirteen healthy adults performed overground walking in a one-to-one, scale-matched virtual replica of the laboratory while simultaneously

BACKGROUND: Talent identification in elite sport is challenged by maturation confounding and limited objective assessment tools. This preliminary study examined whether visual-vestibular-somatosensory and autonomic (VVS-A) measures distinguished podium-level from entry-level divers using machine learning.
OBJECTIVES: (1) Identify VVS-A features distinguishing podium-level divers from a Come and Try group using traditional statistical comparisons; (2) evaluate machine-learning models' ability to classify podium-level athletes; and (3) examine the distribution of classification probabilities us

BACKGROUND: The cochlear implant (CI) is effective for rehabilitating patients with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. However, its placement and use have been associated with various complications, such as those affecting the vestibular system. The objective of this study was to compare vestibular function using the video head impulse test (vHIT) in pediatric patients before and after CI placement.
METHODS: A descriptive and retrospective study was conducted. The outcomes of 11 pediatric patients of both sexes with a history of profound hearing loss were evaluated. The results of

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the relationship between dizziness severity and cognitive dysfunction in vestibular migraine (VM) patients.
METHODS: Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) scores were compared pre- and post-treatment in a cohort of definite VM patients who underwent evaluation in a multidisciplinary clinic from 2016 to 2020.
RESULTS: 44 patients were included. DHI reduction of 11.96 (SD 11.49) (p < 0.001) from an initial mean of 58.36 (22.05) and CFQ reduction of 4.57 (12.20) (p = 0.017) from an initial mean of 47.66 (19.12) were demonstrated

Orthostatic hypertension, which appears to be mediated through excess neurohumoral activation while standing, is a common blood pressure trait among patients with and without arterial hypertension. However, lack of consensus regarding the definition of orthostatic hypertension makes it difficult to assess the true prevalence of this condition. Orthostatic hypertension appears to predict the risk for progression to arterial hypertension in younger and risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in older persons. Yet, the risk may differ between populations. Whether orthostatic hypertension i

Anterograde and retrograde tract tracing were combined with neurotransmitter and modulator immunolabeling to identify the chemical anatomy of vestibular nuclear neurons with direct projections to the solitary nucleus in rats. Direct, sparsely branched but highly varicose axonal projections from neurons in the caudal vestibular nuclei to the solitary nucleus were observed. The vestibular neurons giving rise to these projections were predominantly located in ipsilateral medial vestibular nucleus. The cell bodies were intensely glutamate immunofluorescent, and their axonal processes contained ves

Our perception of verticality relies on combining sensory information from multiple sources. Neuronal recordings in animals implicate the cerebellum in the process, yet disease of the human cerebellum was not found to affect this perception. Here we show that a perceptual disturbance of verticality is indeed present in people with a genetically determined and pure form of cerebellar degeneration (spinocerebellar ataxia type 6; SCA 6), but is only revealed under dynamic visual conditions. Participants were required to continuously orient a visually displayed bar to vertical while the bar angle

OBJECTIVES: Hearing-impaired children are at risk for vestibular damage and delayed motor development. Two major causes of congenital hearing loss are cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and connexin (Cx) 26 mutations. Comparison of the motor performance and vestibular function between these specific groups is still underexplored. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of congenital (c)CMV and Cx26 on the motor performance and vestibular function in 6 months old infants.
DESIGN: Forty children (mean age 6.7 months; range 4.8 to 8.9 months) participated in this cross-sectional d

Vertigo is not a well defined symptom but a heterogenous entity diagnosed and treated mainly by otolaryngologists, neurologists, internal medicine and primary care physicians. Most vertigo syndroms have a good prognosis and management is predominantly conservative, whereas the need for surgical therapy is rare, but for a subset of patients often the only remaining option. In this paper, we describe the development of surgical therapy for hydropic inner ear diseases, Menière disease, dehiscence syndroms, perilymphatic fistulas, and benign paroxysmal vertigo. At the end, we shortly introduce the
