Presumed clostridial and aerobic bacterial infections of the cornea in two horses.

Microscopic examination of Gram-stained tissue specimens collected from severe corneal ulcers in 2 horses revealed large gram-positive rods suggestive of Clostridium spp. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from specimens collected from horse 1; anaerobic organisms were not detected in specimens from horse 2. Aerobic bacterial culture revealed Aeromonas hydrophila and Enterobacter cloacae in specimens collected from horses 1 and 2, respectively. An insect exoskeleton was presumed to be the underlying cause of ulceration in horse 1. Cause of ulceration in horse 2 was not determined. Antibiotic

Assessing the cost-effectiveness of switching from a beta-blocker to latanoprost in the treatment of ocular hypertension.

Glaucoma is a pathological condition whose most important risk factor is increased intraocular pressure (IOP). The medical treatment of glaucoma essentially consists of compounds that are able to decrease the IOP. The compounds discussed in this review act in a different way, beta-blockers mainly inhibit the production of aqueous humor, whereas latanoprost decreases the resistance in the outflow channels. beta-Blockers are compounds with a well-known efficacy and safety profile and they are fairly inexpensive. Their systemic and local side effects are mainly cardiovascular and pulmonary advers

Preclinical and phase 1A clinical evaluation of an anti-VEGF pegylated aptamer (EYE001) for the treatment of exudative age-related macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important stimulus for the growth of new blood vessels in the eye. Anti-VEGF therapy is thus a potential treatment for exudative macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. METHODS: Previously described animal models of vascular leakage and ocular neovascularization, including the Miles assay, the rat corneal angiogenesis model, and the mouse retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) model, were used to study this drug. After these studies, a phase IA single ascending dose study of intravitreal injections

[Adverse side effects caused by topically applied antiviral agents in herpetic keratitis].

The present paper reviews the adverse side effects caused by topically applied antiviral agents in herpetic keratitis. The effective treatment of herpetic keratitis with IDU, a chemotherapeutic agent, was first reported in 1962. After its introduction into ophthalmic therapy for herpetic keratitis, drops of IDU were administered every hour by day combined with ointment every two hours by night. The therapy often continued for months or in some cases, even more than one year. Numerous reports on its side effects have appeared. The side effects can be classified into two categories. The first ca
