Hepatic drug hydroxylation and lipid peroxidation in riboflavin-deficient rats.

The effect of riboflavin deficiency and phenobarbital pretreatment on drug hydroxylation and lipid peroxidation was investigated. A significant decrease in aniline and acetanilide hydroxylation as well as NADPH-linked and ascorbate-induced lipid peroxidation was observed during 4- and 7-week riboflavin deficiency in both adult male and adult female rats. The drug-hydroxylation and lipid-peroxidation activities were further lowered with the increase in riboflavin deficiency. The phenobarbital pretreatment induced aniline and acetanilide hydroxylase activity even in riboflavin-deficient animals.

[The use of alimentary antioxidants in diet therapy of geriatric patients during the period of the surgical treatment].

Analysis of actual feeding of 277 geriatric patients suffering from urology disease. The patients had a combined deficient of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin of the B group, beta-capotene and mineral substances. Diets 1a, 1, 5, 7, 9, 15 could not provide daily needs for antioxidant nutrients. Antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects of the dietary supplement containing natural antioxidants in 122 oncourology patients after operation was indicated. So there was reason to fortify diets of patients with antioxidant dietary supplement during the period of surgical treatment.

Micronutrients in gastrointestinal cancer.

The monitoring of micronutrients and the relationship between dietary intake and micronutrient status prior to and after surgery in patients with histologically proven gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma, both weight-stable and weight-losing (> 7.5% of their pre-illness weight) has been studied and the results compared to controls. Plasma vitamin C and red blood cell thiamine levels were significantly lower in weight-losing cancer patients when compared to their weight-stable counterparts (P < 0.05 and P < 0.02 respectively). Weight-losing patients had a lower vitamin C (P < 0.05) and thiamine (P

Functional analysis of Arabidopsis mutants points to novel roles for glutathione in coupling H(2)O(2) to activation of salicylic acid accumulation and signaling.

AIMS: Through its interaction with H(2)O(2), glutathione is a candidate for transmission of signals in plant responses to pathogens, but identification of signaling roles is complicated by its antioxidant function. Using a genetic approach based on a conditional catalase-deficient Arabidopsis mutant, cat2, this study aimed at establishing whether GSH plays an important functional role in the transmission of signals downstream of H(2)O(2). RESULTS: Introducing the cad2 or allelic mutations in the glutathione synthesis pathway into cat2 blocked H(2)O(2)-triggered GSH oxidation and accumulation.

Influence of micronutrient status and socioeconomic gradient on growth indices of 2-18-year-old Indian girls.

Micronutrient deficiencies are common consequences of the plant-based diet in children from developing countries which may affect their linear and ponderal growth. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between micronutrient status and growth indices in Indian girls. In cross-sectional studies (2006-2010), data on weight, height and diet were collected on 1302 girls (2-18 years) from Pune city, India. Fasting hemoglobin was measured on 1118 girls and serum zinc was measured on 695 girls. Height-for-age Z-scores (HAZ) and body mass index for age Z-score (BMIZ) were computed usi

Exploring the nutritional riches of pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.): a multivariate approach for selection of nutritionally superior genotypes for breeding programmes.

Pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.) is an underutilized yet nutritionally rich vegetable with significant potential to address micronutrient deficiencies in India. However, limited information is available on the extent of variability in nutritional and antioxidant traits and their interrelationships among diverse pointed gourd genotypes, restricting the identification of nutritionally superior breeding materials. A total of 46 genotypes were evaluated for 15 fruit quality parameters, including total phenols, ascorbic acid, carbohydrates, protein, essential minerals, moisture content, a

Association of antioxidant vitamins and oxidative stress levels in pregnancy with infant growth during the first year of life.

OBJECTIVE: Whereas there are numerous reports in the literature relating the impact of maternal nutritional status on subsequent birth outcome, much less is known about the long-term impact on infant growth after birth. Therefore, we conducted a prospective cohort study to investigate the association of maternal micronutrient status (vitamins A, C and E, folate) and oxidative stress status in pregnancy with infant growth during the first year of life. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Outpatient clinic of obstetrics, Ewha Womans University Hospital, Seoul, South Korea. SUBJECTS AND

A-485 alleviates postmenopausal osteoporosis by activating GLUD1 deacetylation through the SENP1-Sirt3 signal pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (OP) is a bone disease caused by estrogen deficiency. A-485 is a selective inhibitor of p300/CBP histone acetyltransferase (HAT) with potential regulatory effects on bone remodeling. This study aims to investigate the effects of A-485 on postmenopausal OP and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: For animal experiments, 61 female Wistar rats were used to establish an OP model through ovariectomy (OVX). The rats were administered with A-485 (100 mg/kg/day) via intraperitoneal injection for six weeks. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using dual-energy

The effect of chemical and physiological factors on the kinetics for product formation as it relates to enzyme activity and concentration, reaction time and to substrate adsorption and affinity.

1. The dependency of product formation on reaction time and on enzyme concentration was studied with certain purified enzymes and liver microsomal mixed-function oxidase system. 2. The product-formation-time relation was estimated with different enzyme and/or substrate concentrations for the reactions limited by diffusion. 3. The kinetic constants of the product-time relations in these diffusion systems have been verified experimentally to give a more specific and detailed characterization of an enzyme system under a variety of physiologic and reaction conditions. 4. The influence of inhibitor

Vitamin C Deficiency, High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein, and Cardiac Event-Free Survival in Patients With Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C is related to lower levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), an inflammatory biomarker that predicts cardiovascular disease. Whether vitamin C deficiency is associated with hsCRP and cardiac events in heart failure (HF) patients has not been examined. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to determine the relationships among vitamin C intake, serum levels of hsCRP, and cardiac events. METHODS: A total of 200 HF patients completed a 3-day food diary to determine vitamin C deficiency and provided blood to measure serum levels of hsCRP. Patients were followed for
