Chiropractic services in the active duty military setting: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Bivalves comprise a large, highly diverse taxon of invertebrate species. Developmental studies of neurogenesis among species of Bivalvia are limited. Due to a lack of neurogenesis information, it is difficult to infer a ground pattern for Bivalvia. To provide more comprehensive morphogenetic data on bivalve molluscs and relationships among molluscan clades, we investigated neurogenesis in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, from the appearance of the first sensory cells to the formation of the larval ganglionic nervous system by co-immunocytochemistry of the neuronal markers FMR

Store-Operated Calcium Entry in Müller Glia Is Controlled by Synergistic Activation of TRPC and Orai Channels.

UNLABELLED: The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is at the epicenter of astrocyte Ca(2+) signaling. We sought to identify the molecular mechanism underlying store-operated calcium entry that replenishes ER stores in mouse Müller cells. Store depletion, induced through blockade of sequestration transporters in Ca(2+)-free saline, induced synergistic activation of canonical transient receptor potential 1 (TRPC1) and Orai channels. Store-operated TRPC1 channels were identified by their electrophysiological properties, pharmacological blockers, and ablation of the Trpc1 gene. Ca(2+) release-activated cu

Intracortical connectivity of architectonic fields in the somatic sensory, motor and parietal cortex of monkeys.

Anterograde and retrograde transport methods were used to study the corticocortical connectivity of areas 3a, 3b, 1, 2, 5, 4 and 6 of the monkey cerebral cortex. Fields were identified by cytoarchitectonic features and by thalamic connectivity in the same brains. Area 3a was identified by first recording a short latency group I afferent evoked potential. Attempts were made to analyze the data in terms of: (1) routes whereby somatic sensory input might influence the performance of motor cortex neurons; (2) possible multiple representations of the body surface in the component fields of the firs

Chitosan-based responsive self-healing waterborne anti-corrosion coating incorporating conductive polymer hydrogel network.

In the nervous system, neuronal action potentials induced by stimulation reach axon terminals, triggering neurotransmitter release and propagating signals across the neural network. Inspired by neural signal transduction mechanisms, this study designs a responsive self-healing coating synergizing active and passive corrosion protection. A conductive polyaniline-grafted chitosan hydrogel network is integrated into a waterborne epoxy resin matrix via hydrogel coating technology. The inhibitor 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) is vacuum-encapsulated and deposited onto 304 stainless steel by spin-coat

Cocaine-induced interindividual variability in female rats: From behavior to gene expression.

Cocaine use disorder is marked by strong interindividual variability, yet the molecular determinants underlying vulnerability in females remain poorly characterized. Here, we adapted a statistical model previously validated in males to classify female rats exposed to a cocaine-induced conditioned place preference paradigm into two subgroups: those expressing cocaine reward (CPP expression (CPPE), score >74 s) and those showing no preference ((nCPPE), score between -19 and 53 s), independently of estrous-cycle influences. Despite identical cocaine exposure, two clear behavioral phenotypes emerg

Bioenergetic failure and oxidative stress: mitochondrial contributions to Alzheimer's disease.

The pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative illness marked by memory loss and cognitive decline, is greatly impacted by mitochondrial dysfunction. Recent research suggests that a number of interconnected processes, such as elevated oxidative stress, disturbed energy metabolism, compromised calcium homeostasis, and malformed mitochondrial dynamics, all lead to neuronal injury. The mitochondria in AD brains have structural defects and the function of important oxidative phosphorylation-related enzymes is lowered, which results in less ATP being produced. Furt

A Photodermatologic Perspective on Shingles: A Narrative Review Exploring the Skin Microbiome as a Variable in the Effect of UV Radiation on VZV Reactivation.

Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), a member of the herpes virus family, causes varicella (chicken pox) upon primary infection and later manifests as herpes zoster ([HZ] or shingles) upon reactivation. VZV-specific T-cell immunity acquired during primary infection aids recovery, with the virus lying latent in neuronal ganglia until it transports to the skin axonally during reactivation. It has been well-established that reduced T-cell recognition and proliferation, as well as immunosuppression more generally, contribute to VZV reactivation. It has also been discovered that seasonal variation, which

Glycine is a transmitter in the human and chimpanzee cochlear nuclei.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory information is relayed from the cochlea via the eighth cranial nerve to the dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei (DCN, VCN). The organization, neurochemistry and circuitry of the cochlear nuclei (CN) have been studied in many species. It is well-established that glycine is an inhibitory transmitter in the CN of rodents and cats, with glycinergic cells in the DCN and VCN. There are, however, major differences in the laminar and cellular organization of the DCN between humans (and other primates) and rodents and cats. We therefore asked whether there might also be difference

Immunohistochemical localization of proteins involved in exocytosis of glutamate from P2X3 purinoceptor-expressing subserosal afferent nerve endings in the rat gastric antrum.

We previously reported the presence of P2X3 purinoceptors (P2X3)-expressing subserosal afferent nerve endings consisting of net- and basket-like nerve endings in the rat gastric antrum. These nerve endings may morphologically be vagal mechanoreceptors activated by antral peristalsis. The present study investigated immunoreactivities for vesicular glutamate transporter (VGLUT) 1 and VGLUT2 as well as exocytosis-related proteins, i.e., core components of the SNARE complex (SNAP25, Stx1, and VAMP2) and synaptotagmin-1 (Syt1), in whole-mount preparations of the rat gastric antrum using double immu

Role of GSK-3β Inhibitors: New Promises and Opportunities for Alzheimer's Disease.

Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) was discovered to be a multifunctional enzyme involved in a wide variety of biological processes, including early embryo formation, oncogenesis, as well cell death in neurodegenerative diseases. Several critical cellular processes in the brain are regulated by the GSK-3β, serving as a central switch in the signaling pathways. Dysregulation of GSK-3β kinase has been reported in diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, inflammation, and Huntington's disease. Thus, GSK-3β is widely regarded as a promising target for therapeutic use

Immunohistochemical analysis of glutamatergic and serotonergic signaling pathways in chemosensory cell clusters in the pharynx and larynx of rats.

The present study examined cellular components and the localization of vesicular glutamate transporter (VGLUT) 1 and 2 and serotonin (5-HT) in chemosensory cell clusters in the rat pharynx and larynx. Triple immunolabeling for guanine nucleotide-binding protein G (t), subunit ⍺3 (GNAT3) and nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 2 (NTPDase2) with synaptotagmin-1 (Syt1) revealed NTPDase2-immunoreactive type I-like cells in addition to GNAT3-immunoreactive type II-like and Syt1-immunoreactive type III-like cells in pharyngolaryngeal chemosensory cell clusters. Therefore, these clusters appea

Chronic Voluntary Morphine Intake Is Associated with Changes in Brain Structures Involved in Drug Dependence in a Rat Model of Polydrug Use.

Chronic opioid intake leads to several brain changes involved in the development of dependence, whereby an early hedonistic effect (liking) extends to the need to self-administer the drug (wanting), the latter being mostly a prefrontal-striatal function. The development of animal models for voluntary oral opioid intake represents an important tool for identifying the cellular and molecular alterations induced by chronic opioid use. Studies mainly in humans have shown that polydrug use and drug dependence are shared across various substances. We hypothesize that an animal bred for its alcohol p

Selectively Imaging Cranial Sensory Ganglion Neurons Using AAV-PHP.S.

Because of their ease of use, adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are indispensable tools for much of neuroscience. Yet AAVs have been used relatively little to study the identities and connectivity of peripheral sensory neurons, principally because methods to selectively target peripheral neurons have been limited. The introduction of the AAV-PHP.S capsid with enhanced tropism for peripheral neurons (Chan et al., 2017) offered a solution, which we further elaborate here. Using AAV-PHP.S with GFP or mScarlet fluorescent proteins, we show that the mouse sensory ganglia for cranial nerves V, VII, IX

Pacinian Corpuscles as a Diagnostic Clue of Ledderhose Disease-A Case Report and Mapping of Pacinian Corpuscles of the Sole.

BACKGROUND: Plantar fibromatosis, known as Ledderhose disease, is a neoplastic disease characterized by a locally-aggressive bland fibroblastic proliferation. Although Pacinian corpuscles alterations are commonly described in palmar fibromatosis, there are still no references about Pacinian corpuscles alterations in the rarer plantar version. METHODS: We present a case report where a wide cutaneous resection, including the plantar fascia was performed, allowing a detailed study of Pacinian corpuscles. Pacinian corpuscles were analyzed using immunohistochemistry for neurofilament proteins, S10

Decussating axons segregate within the anterior core of the primate optic chiasm.

BACKGROUND: The axons of ganglion cells in the nasal retina decussate at the optic chiasm. It is unclear why tumours cause more injury to crossing nasal fibres, thereby giving rise to temporal visual field loss in each eye. To address this issue, the course of fibres through the optic chiasm was examined following injection of a different fluorescent tracer into each eye of a monkey. METHODS: Under general anaesthesia, cholera toxin subunit B-Alexa Fluor 488 was injected into the right eye and cholera toxin subunit B-Alexa Fluor 594 was injected into the left eye of a single normal adult male

Expansion of the phenotypic spectrum of de novo missense variants in kinesin family member 1A (KIF1A).

Defects in the motor domain of kinesin family member 1A (KIF1A), a neuron-specific ATP-dependent anterograde axonal transporter of synaptic cargo, are well-recognized to cause a spectrum of neurological conditions, commonly known as KIF1A-associated neurological disorders (KAND). Here, we report one mutation-negative female with classic Rett syndrome (RTT) harboring a de novo heterozygous novel variant [NP_001230937.1:p.(Asp248Glu)] in the highly conserved motor domain of KIF1A. In addition, three individuals with severe neurodevelopmental disorder along with clinical features overlapping with…

Neuropathic Pain Up-Regulates Hypothalamo-Neurohypophysial and Hypothalamo-Spinal Oxytocinergic Pathways in Oxytocin-Monomeric Red Fluorescent Protein 1 Transgenic Rat.

Despite the high incidence of neuropathic pain, its mechanism remains unclear. Oxytocin (OXT) is an established endogenous polypeptide produced in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus. OXT, which is synthesized by OXT neurons in the SON and the magnocellular part of the PVN (mPVN), is delivered into the posterior pituitary (PP), then released into the systemic blood circulation. Meanwhile, OXT-containing neurosecretory cells in the parvocellular part of the PVN (pPVN) are directly projected to the spinal cord and are associated with sensory modulat

Spastin MIT Domain Disease-Associated Mutations Disrupt Lysosomal Function.

The hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are genetic motor neuron diseases characterized by progressive degeneration of corticospinal tract axons. Mutations in SPAST, encoding the microtubule-severing ATPase spastin, are the most common causes of HSP. The broad SPAST mutational spectrum indicates a haploinsufficiency pathogenic mechanism in most cases. Most missense mutations cluster in the ATPase domain, where they disrupt the protein's ability to sever microtubules. However, several putative missense mutations in the protein's microtubule interacting and trafficking (MIT) domain have also b

Changes in innervation of lumbar motoneurons and organization of premotor network following training of transected adult rats.

Rats with complete spinal cord transection (SCT) can recover hindlimb locomotor function under strategies combining exercise training and 5-HT agonist treatment. This recovery is expected to result from structural and functional re-organization within the spinal cord below the lesion. To begin to understand the nature of this reorganization, we examined synaptic changes to identified gastrocnemius (GS) or tibialis anterior (TA) motoneurons (MNs) in SCT rats after a schedule of early exercise training and delayed 5-HT agonist treatment. In addition, we analyzed changes in distribution and numbe
