This article briefly reviews the duration criteria for delusional disorder in current diagnostic systems. Furthermore, a sample of 72 first-admitted patients with delusional disorder, personally re-examined after a mean of 10 and 27 years, has been analysed as to duration of delusional symptoms. One third of the sample displayed delusions for less than 6 months at admission. During the observation period one half of these patients (one sixth of the total sample), displayed delusional symptoms for less than 6 months, recovered fully, and functioned excellently at follow-up, while patients with

We have studied the effects of phonation and posture on the Mallampati classification of view of the pharyngeal structures. Differences between observers were allowed for by the experimental design and log-linear modelling. A total number of 564 patients with glottic (427) and supraglottic (137) laryngeal carcinoma was prospectively staged clinicoendoscopically (CS) and radiologically (RS). These patients were treated from 1974 to 1985 with quality-controlled high-dose radiation therapy. The validity of CS versus RS was checked in this study with the parameter of recurrence-free adjusted survival (RFADS) at 3 and at 5 years. It appears that RS is more valid and has therapeutic implications in planning the target volume for irradiation. The CS should be regarded as inadequate for radiotherapeutic considerations. T

In the introduction classification of socalled "psychosomatic" disorders in ICD-9 and DSM-III are critically reviewed and supplemented by the author's proposal. Furthermore, main findings coming from international epidemiological research on diseases usually involving tissue damage (bronchial asthma, peptic ulcer, neurodermatitis) and the eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, obesity) are reported. Findly, some conclusions with regard to treatment of the afflicted clientele and research are drawn.

A new scheme that classifies cerebrovascular disease on the basis of current and prior clinical symptoms, arteriographic findings, and target organ abnormalities has been evaluated. CT scans of 26 patients with laryngeal or hypopharyngeal carcinoma were compared with macrosections and histological slices obtained from laryngectomy specimens in order to assess the role of CT scanning in the staging of hypopharyngolaryngeal carcinoma. Of the 26 cases six could not be staged correctly without CT. Computed tomography proved particularly useful in staging medium sized carcinomas (T2/3) of the supraglottic and piriform sinus region.

An empirical typology of problem drinker-drivers based on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was evaluated. Relationships were demonstrated between this typology and several kinds of external criteria: alcoholism symptoms, reasons for drinking, treatment participation and outcome and medical complications. Indicators of typological validity were further evaluated in the context of alternative means of scoring and categorizing MMPI profiles.
