Biocontrol and plant growth promoting traits of two avocado rhizobacteria are orchestrated by the emission of diffusible and volatile compounds.

Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is a tree crop of great social and economic importance. However, the crop productivity is hindered by fast-spreading diseases, which calls for the search of new biocontrol alternatives to mitigate the impact of avocado phytopathogens. Our objectives were to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of diffusible and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by two avocado rhizobacteria (Bacillus A8a and HA) against phytopathogens Fusarium solani, Fusarium kuroshium, and Phytophthora cinnamomi, and assess their plant growth promoting effect in Arabidopsis thaliana. Effects of AttM lactonase on the pathogenicity of Streptomyces scabies.

UNLABELLED: The biosynthesis of phytotoxin thaxtomin A (TXT) constitutes the major pathogenicity determinant in Streptomyces scabies, the most widely studied phytopathogen causing scab disease in potato and other root crops. It is recognized that S. scabies regulates its pathogenicity via γ-butyrolactone (GBL)-dependent quorum sensing (QS) signalling. AttM, from Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58 strain, has recently been proposed to have GBL-assimilative capacity. Here, we presented the introduction of A. tumefaciens-derived attM gene into S. scabies using the Escherichia coli-Streptomyces shuttle

Role of theobromine and caffeine in resistance to Phytophthora spp. in Theobroma cacao.

Methylxanthines, such as theobromine and caffeine, are alkaloids produced in a variety of widely consumed plant species including tea, coffee, yerba mate, and chocolate. While these compounds are favored by humans for their stimulating properties, plants are thought to produce them primarily for defense purposes. Cacao (Theobroma cacao; the chocolate tree), the source of edible cocoa and chocolate products, is an important crop in the tropics that suffers considerable yield losses due to diseases. Here, we report that a disease-tolerant cacao genotype predominantly accumulates caffeine in youn

Rhizobacteria-Mediated Reprogramming of Phytohormone Landscapes for Mitigating Salinity Stress in Plants.

Salinity stress is one of the major stressors that limits yield potential in field crops. Salinity-led imbalances in ionic and water potential, as well as oxidative damage, impair photosynthesis. Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) have been demonstrated to mitigate salinity-stress-induced damage through various mechanisms such as biofilm and exopolysaccharide production, modulation of plant root architecture or molecular signaling involving modulation of sodium/potassium efflux transporters. PGPRs are known to induce biosynthesis and signaling of various phytohormones in plants. PGPR

Multiple BnaSOBIR1-Associated Receptor-like Proteins Contribute to Enhanced Resistance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in Brassica napus L. (Oilseed Rape).

As a major fungal pathogen of Brassica napus, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum causes significant yield reductions worldwide. Receptor-like proteins (RLPs) are essential components of plant immunity, but the functions of many RLPs in B. napus still remain unclear. In this study, three BnaSOBIR1-interacting leucine-rich repeat RLPs (LRR-RLPs), named BnaRLP-G13-2, BnaRLP-G13-3, and BnaRLP-G13-4, were identified by yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assays. Promoter analysis revealed diverse cis-acting elements involved in stress and phytohormone responses. Overexp

Genome-wide identification and functional validation of asparagine synthetase genes (NtASNs) in Nicotiana tabacum.

Asparagine (Asn) is pivotal for plant nitrogen (N) metabolism and plays indispensable roles in plant growth, development, and stress tolerance. However, the systematic characteristics and core functions of asparagine synthetase genes (NtASNs) in tobacco remain unclear. Through a comprehensive genome-wide investigation, nine members of the NtASN gene family were identified. Subsequent CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout and overexpression assays of these NtASN genes revealed that NtASN1e, NtASN2a, and NtASN2b are the core genes responsible for Asn biosynthesis in tobacco. Their knockout reduced aspar

Amino Acids as Multifunctional Molecules in Plants: From Fundamental Metabolism to Precision Agriculture.

Amino acids are organic compounds that serve as the fundamental building blocks of proteins and are additionally responsible for a multitude of other biological functions. This review synthesizes recent evidence elucidating that amino acids function as vital players in nitrogen transport, stress defense, and perhaps most intriguingly as signaling molecules. For example, glutamate triggers calcium signals through GLR receptors to guide root growth and pollen tubes. Others, like proline and glutathione, protect cells from drought, salt, and oxidative damage. Aromatic and sulfur-containing amino

Role of stomatal and leaf anatomical features in defining plant performance under elevated carbon dioxide and ozone, in the changing climate scenario.

This research investigates the interactive effects of elevated ozone (eO3) and carbon dioxide (eCO2) on stomatal morphology and leaf anatomical characteristics in two wheat cultivars with varying O3 sensitivities. Elevated O3 increased stomatal density and conductance, causing oxidative stress and cellular damage, particularly in the O3-sensitive cultivar PBW-550 (PW), compared to HUW-55 (HW). Conversely, eCO2 reduced stomatal density and pore size, mitigating O3-induced damage by limiting O3 influx. Ultrastructural analysis showed that eO3 increased plastoglobule density and damaged chloropla

Long-Term in vivo Observation of Maize Leaf Xylem Embolism, Transpiration and Photosynthesis During Drought and Recovery.

Plant water transport is essential to maintain turgor, photosynthesis and growth. Water is transported in a metastable state under large negative pressures, which can result in embolism, that is, the loss of function by the replacement of liquid xylem sap with gas, as a consequence of water stress. To avoid experimental artefacts, we used an optical vulnerability system to quantify embolism occurrence across six fully expanded maize leaves to characterize the sequence of physiological responses (photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, whole-plant transpiration and leaf inter-vein distance) i
