A national filariasis survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and distribution of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaraemia and clinical disease associated with lymphatic filariasis in Ghana. Multi-stage systematic sampling was used to select households to be examined in all 10 administrative regions of the country. The results showed a high prevalence of microfilaraemia and disease with considerable regional variation in all the quantities investigated. In general, the disease was more prevalent in the northern guinea savannah and the southern coastal savannah, while the middle forest bel

To identify long-term effects of prenatal exposure to maternal filarial-parasite infection, we assessed lymphocyte responses in 21 Polynesian children born 17-19 years previously to mothers diagnosed as being microfilaraemic or infection-free. All children lived on an island endemic for bancroftian filariasis but were free from infection at the time of study. While children (n = 10) of infection-free mothers responded vigorously to microfilarial antigen with lymphocyte proliferation, production of interleukin 2 (IL-2), IL-5, IL-10, granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and

In 1991, a study on Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae (mf) and infection rates was carried out in the human and mosquito populations of a Polynesian village where, 10 years before, the mf prevalence rate was 6.4% and twice-yearly mass treatment with 3 mg/kg of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) was interrupted. Venous blood samples were collected from 575 (97%) individuals aged 15 years or more, of whom 122 (21.4%) were mf positive. The mf carrier prevalence rate was 27.4% in males, significantly higher than that of 14% in females; it increased from 7-12% in the youngest age group (15-19 years) to 40-5

The indirect fluorescent antibody test, the enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay and the indirect haemagglutination test were evaluated in immunodiagnosis of bancroftian filariasis using W. bancrofti microfilarial antigens. The tests gave a higher positive reactions with microfilaraemic, clinical filarial and endemic normal sera respectively. Non-specific cross-reactions were common in the three tests, so immunodiagnosis should be preceded by stool examination. IFAT gave the highest sensitivity and specificity, while IHAT was the least one. ELISA is simple, sensitive and can be used in seroepide

This article examines the evaluation of a bancroftian filariasis control programme undertaken in Pondicherry from 1981-5. Integrated vector management was applied in one half of the town, and routine operations under the national programme (larviciding and chemotherapy) continued in the comparison area. The programme was evaluated by monitoring relative change in the epidemiological statistics of both populations. The results indicate that there was significant reduction in prevalence of microfilaraemia in juveniles in the controlled area. An apparent reduction in intensity of microfilaraemia

INTRODUCTION: India targets to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) in alignment with the global goals. By 2024, 106 out of a total of 345 endemic districts have passed all three serial transmission assessment surveys (TAS) and are under post-mass drug administration (MDA) surveillance for a variable period. However, the current epidemiological situation of LF is not known in these districts. With increased mobility of population from the endemic districts currently under MDA to these post-MDA areas, resurgence of LF in these areas cannot be ruled out. Therefore, a study is planned to understan

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as lymphatic filariasis (LF) are a significant concern in developing countries like Bangladesh. Understanding the health and social needs of individuals with LF is essential for improving their healthcare-seeking experiences and advancing the health system's capacity. Therefore, this qualitative study aimed to explore the social and care-seeking experiences of persons with LF in Bangladesh.
METHOD: Semi-structured, face-to-face, in-depth interviews were conducted with people with LF in two highly endemic districts in northern Bangladesh. Onl

Annual mass drug administration (MDA) is currently recommended for the local elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF). Modeling studies of LF transmission suggest that conducting MDA twice a year could accelerate LF elimination. To test this idea, we compared the effects of 3 rounds of yearly MDA and 5 rounds of semiannual MDA using diethylcarbamazine with albendazole on LF infection measures in Papua New Guinea (PNG) across 2 treatment areas with high LF prevalence. From 2013 to 2018, we conducted 4 annual community surveys at 4 sentinel sites in each treatment area. We sampled 2,854 people a

BACKGROUND: To monitor the progress of lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination programmes, field surveys to assess filarial antigen (Ag) prevalence require access to reliable, user-friendly rapid diagnostic tests. We aimed to evaluate the performance of the new Q Filariasis Antigen Test (QFAT) with the currently recommended Filariasis Test Strip (FTS) for detecting the Ag of Wuchereria bancrofti, the causative agent of LF, under field laboratory conditions.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: During an LF survey in Samoa, 344 finger-prick blood samples were tested using FTS and QFAT. Microfilariae

The World Health Organization in 2022 reported that more than 863 million people in 50 countries are at risk of developing lymphatic filariasis (LF), a disease caused by parasitic infection. Immune responses to parasites suggest that the development of a prophylactic vaccine against LF is possible. Using a reverse vaccinology approach, the current study identified Trehalose-6-phosphatase (TPP) as a potential vaccine candidate among 15 reported vaccine antigens for B. malayi. High-ranking B and T-cell epitopes in the Trehalose-6-phosphatase (TPP) were shortlisted using online servers for subseq

BACKGROUND: The impact of semiannual mass drug administration (MDA) with albendazole (ALB; 400 mg) alone on lymphatic filariasis (LF) and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections was assessed during two trials conducted from 2012 to 2018 in the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The collected data were analyzed to evaluate the effect of compliance with ALB treatment on STH infections.
METHODS: STH infections were diagnosed with duplicate Kato-Katz thick smears and the results are reported as eggs per gram of stool. All subjects with at least two STH infection assessment

The implementation of mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns of albendazole (400 mg) and ivermectin (150-200 μm/kg) since 2001 has helped to change the epidemiological profile of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in many health districts in Burkina Faso. From 2002 to 2016, 14 rounds of MDA have taken place in the Central East zone, with therapeutic coverage exceeding 65%. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the impact of MDA in the fight against LF at 12 sentinel and spot-check sites. This descriptive cross-sectional study surveyed subjects aged 5 years and older between April and Jul

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne filarial disease targeted for elimination by the year 2020. The Republic of Togo undertook mass treatment of entire endemic communities from 2000 to 2009 to eliminate the transmission of the disease and is currently the first sub-Saharan African country to be validated by WHO for the elimination of LF as a public health problem. However, post-validation surveillance activities are required to ensure the gains achieved are sustained. This survey assessed the mosquito vectors of the disease and determined the presence of infection in thes

It is well known that individuals in the same community can be exposed to a highly variable number of mosquito bites. This heterogeneity in bite exposure has consequences for the control of vector-borne diseases because a few people may be contributing significantly to transmission. However, very few studies measure sources of heterogeneity in a way which is relevant to decision-making. We investigate the relationship between two classic measures of heterogeneity, spatial and individual, within the context of lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic mosquito-borne disease. Using infection and mosquit

INTRODUCTION:: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a public health problem in Haiti. Thus, the emigration of Haitians to Brazil is worrisome because of the risk for LF re-emergence.
METHODS:: Blood samples of Haitian immigrants, aged ≥18 years, who emigrated to Manaus (Brazilian Amazon), were examined using thick blood smears, membrane blood filtration, and immunochromatography.
RESULTS:: Of the 244 immigrants evaluated, 1 (0.4%) tested positive for W. bancrofti; 11.5% reported as having received LF treatment in Haiti.
CONCLUSIONS:: The re-emergence of LF in Manaus is unlikely, due to its low prev

BACKGROUND: Once interruption of transmission of lymphatic filariasis is achieved, morbidity prevention and management becomes more important. A study in Brugia malayi filariasis from India has shown sub-clinical lymphatic pathology with potential reversibility. We studied a Wuchereria bancrofti infected population, the major contributor to LF globally.
METHODS: Children aged 5-18 years from Odisha, India were screened for W. bancrofti infection and disease. 102 infected children, 50 with filarial disease and 52 without symptoms were investigated by lymphoscintigraphy and then randomized to r

BACKGROUND: The suitability of using clinical assessment to identify patients with podoconiosis in endemic communities has previously been demonstrated. In this study, we explored the feasibility and accuracy of using Community Health Implementers (CHIs) for the large scale clinical screening of the population for podoconiosis in North-west Cameroon.
METHODS: Before a regional podoconiosis mapping, 193 CHIs and 50 health personnel selected from 6 health districts were trained in the clinical diagnosis of the disease. After training, CHIs undertook community screening for podoconiosis patients

The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis has made significant progress toward interrupting transmission of lymphatic filariasis (LF) through mass drug administration (MDA). Operational challenges in defining endpoints of elimination programs include the need to determine appropriate post-MDA surveillance strategies. As humans are the only reservoirs of LF parasites, one such strategy is molecular xenomonitoring (MX), the detection of filarial DNA in mosquitoes using molecular methods (PCR), to provide an indirect indicator of infected persons nearby. MX could potentially be used

BACKGROUND: Among the 216 districts in Ghana, 98 were declared endemic for lymphatic filariasis in 1999 after mapping. Pursuing the goal of elimination, WHO recommends annual treatment using mass drugs administration (MDA) for at least 5 years. MDA was started in the country in 2001 and reached national coverage in 2006. By 2014, 69 districts had 'stopped-MDA' (after passing the transmission assessment survey) while 29 others remained with persistent microfilaraemia (mf) prevalence (≥1%) despite more than 11 years of MDA and were classified as 'hotspots'.
METHODS: An ecological study was carr
