Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a multisystemic autosomal dominant disease affecting approximately 1 individual in 3500. Inherited diseases of pigmentation were among the first traits studied in humans because of their easy recognition. This article presents selected hypopigmentary disorders, which can be divided into hypomelanocytoses and hypomelanoses. Hereditary hypomelanoses are caused by abnormal melanin biosynthesis as well as by abnormal transfer of mature melanosomes to melanocyte dendrites and to neighboring cells. IMPORTANCE: Crouzon syndrome with acanthosis nigricans is a distinct disorder caused by a mutation in the FGFR3 gene, featuring craniosynostosis, characteristic facial features, and atypical and extensive acanthosis nigricans. Other cutaneous findings have not been thoroughly described.
OBSERVATIONS: We report 6 cases and summarize the existing literature with regard to the cutaneous manifestations of this disorder. All patients have widespread, early-onset acanthosis nigricans. Patients often have prominent hypopigmented scars at surgical sites and nevi arising early in childhood.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed dye laser (PDL) is the first choice for treatment of port wine stains (PWS). However, outcome is highly variable and only a few patients achieve complete clearance. CONCLUSIONS: The CO(2) laser is an effective and durable treatment for rhinophyma. Treatment carries a low risk of side-effects and is associated with high patient acceptability and satisfaction.
