This review highlights the potential of endophytic microorganisms and their secondary metabolites as innovative biopesticides for sustainable disease management in agriculture. Agriculture faces substantial challenges from phytopathogens, resulting in significant economic losses worldwide, which are typically addressed with synthetic pesticides that pose environmental and health hazards. Endophytic microorganisms residing within plant tissues without inducing disease provide a natural defence alternative by synthesising a variety of beneficial secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, terpen

The rape stem weevil (Ceutorhynchus asper) is a devastating pest of cruciferous crops, and its management heavily relies on insecticides, leading to resistance development and environmental concerns. CaspOR20 is a highly expressed odorant receptor in the antennae of C. asper, yet its functional role remains unclear. In this study, by using the transgenic Drosophila expression system combined with single sensillum recordings, we identified six volatile compounds (1-penten-3-ol, 2-heptanone, sulcatone, methyl salicylate, benzaldehyde, and ethyl acetate) as ligands for CaspOR20. Subsequent electr

The sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae), is one of the most destructive pests of sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] crops worldwide. Current management of the sweet potato weevil relies heavily on conventional pesticides, raising concerns about pesticide residues, environmental impacts, and the development of pesticide resistance. This study evaluated the effects of seven essential oils (EOs): eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), garlic (Allium sativum), marigold (Calendula officinalis), mustard seed (Sinapis alba), peppermint (Mentha piperita), rosema

PURPOSE: Both South and North Korea are identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having the potential to eliminate malaria. However, the increase in malaria cases during the COVID-19 response has prompted an investigation into the reasons behind this unexpected rise.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Epidemiological, entomological, and meteorological data from national and international surveillance systems were analyzed. Using the WHO's analytical framework, which can be effectively applied during the elimination phase, we assessed drivers of malaria resurgence in North and South Korea.

The southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula L., is a highly polyphagous global pest that causes substantial economic losses on a broad range of crops. Current management strategies rely heavily on chemical insecticides, which can promote resistance development and negatively affect non-target beneficial organisms. The lack of a tractable in vitro cell culture system has limited the development of more targeted and sustainable control approaches for this species. In this study, we identified the optimal egg age for culture initiation and evaluated seven insect cell culture media or medium com

Pesticides with vastly different modes of action are needed to combat pests that have become multipesticide resistant. One proposed alternative is the pyrrole insecticide chlorfenapyr. This propesticide needs bioactivation by CYP450 enzymes to form the more potent metabolite tralopyril. However, its effects on nontarget soil organisms are largely unknown. This study aimed to assess the toxicity of chlorfenapyr to Folsomia candida and Enchytraeus crypticus, two model species for soil ecotoxicology, following Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines. The cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), is a widely distributed, highly polyphagous lepidopteran pest that poses a major threat to agricultural productivity across various cropping systems. Successful management of this pest relies on continuous scientific investigation and targeted management strategies within Integrated Pest Management programs. This study investigated the insecticidal efficacy of pure thymol and 1,8-cineole (also known as Eucalyptol), both separately and in binary combination, against 3rd instar larvae of H. armigera. The bioassay findings revealed that thymol e

Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever, poses a global health challenge. Traditional vector control strategies predominantly rely on broad-spectrum insecticides, which not only contribute to development of resistance in mosquitoes but also pose significant risks to non-target organisms and the environment. Here, we assessed the potential of cigarette butt (CB) extract for the management of A. aegypti population. Globally, 4.5 trillion CBs are being wasted annually, which is expected to rise to nine trillion by 2025. So, repurposing this waste

Breast cancer is one of the most common and deadly cancers in women worldwide. Current treatments for breast cancer have limitations, such as toxicity, resistance, and side effects. Therefore, there is a need to develop new and effective anti-cancer agents from natural sources. Spinosyn A (SPA) is a natural product derived from soil bacteria. SPA has been reported to have anti-parasitic, insecticidal, and anti-bacterial activities. However, its anti-cancer effects and mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of SPA on T47-D, estrogen receptor-positive brea

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Aedes albopictus is a vector of dengue and Zika viruses. Insecticide-resistant mosquito populations have evolved in recent decades, suggesting that new control strategies are needed. Hong Kong has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, which favours the spread of mosquitoes. However, baseline information on the composition and dynamics of the occurrence of endosymbiont Wolbachia in local Ae. albopictus is lacking, hindering the development of scientifically-informed control measures. This study identifies the presence and absence of dengue and Zika viruses, an

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases are prevalent in Myanmar, with the number of dengue cases showing a significant increase in recent years. Dengue vectors have developed resistance to insecticides and currently used larvicides show only short-term effectiveness. As a result, an alternative larvicide is urgently needed. The present study evaluated the larvicidal effectiveness of long-lasting pyriproxyfen resin discs (SumiLarv®2MR) against dengue virus vectors in schools in Hlaing Thar Yar Township, Yangon.
RESULTS: The proportion of Aedes mosquito-infested containers was significantly reduce

Nematodes are considered as major plant parasites damaging most of the crops, and neem plant exhibits potential nematicidal and insecticidal properties. This study aimed to check nemato-toxic potential of neem (Azadirachta indica) plant using in vitro and in-planta trials against Meloidogyne incognita. The findings suggested that the neem extracts were lethal to second-stage juvenile (J2) and egg hatching with simultaneous enhancement in treated tomato plant growth. The egg numbers of M. incognita found less sensitive to the aqueous and alcoholic extracts than those of J2 as per LC50 values. C

Mosquito-borne diseases represent a deadly threat for millions of people worldwide. However, the use of synthetic insecticides to control Culicidae may lead to resistance, high operational costs and adverse non-target effects. Nowadays, plant-borne mosquitocides may serve as suitable alternative in the fight against mosquito vectors. In this study, the mosquito larvicidal activity of Origanum vulgare (Lamiaceae) leaf essential oil (EO) and its major chemical constituents was evaluated against the malaria vectors Anopheles stephensi and An. subpictus, the filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatu

Turkey is located in the middle of Asia, Africa and Europe, close to Caucasia, Balkans and Middle East in subtropical climate zone. Malaria has been known since the early ages of human history and it was one of the leading diseases in Anatolian history, as well. Today, chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium vivax is the only agent of autochthonous malaria cases in Turkey. The other Plasmodium species identified are isolated from imported cases of malaria. The most common vector of malaria in Turkey is Anopheles sacharovi followed by An. superpictus, An. maculipennis and An. subalpinus. In 2009, pre-

BACKGROUND: Honey bees (Apis mellifera) have recently experienced higher than normal overwintering colony losses. Many factors have been evoked to explain the losses, among which are the presence of residues of pesticides and veterinary products in hives. Multiple residues are present at the same time, though most often in low concentrations so that no single product has yet been associated with losses. Involvement of a combination of residues to losses may however not be excluded. To understand the impact of an exposure to combined residues on honey bees, we propose a mechanism-based strategy

Malaria is endemic in India with an estimated 70-100 million cases each year (1.6-1.8 million reported by NVBDCP); of this 50-55% are Plasmodium vivax and 45-50% Plasmodium falciparum. A recent study on malaria in pregnancy reported from undivided Madhya Pradesh state (includes Chhattisgarh state), that an estimated over 220,000 pregnant women contract malaria infection each year. Malaria in pregnancy caused- abortions 34.5%; stillbirths 9%; and maternal deaths 0.45%. Bulk of this tragic outcome can be averted by following the Roll Back Malaria/WHO recommendations of the use of malaria prevent

Arboviral diseases in Indonesia remain a public health problem and a threat. The annual increase in cases is caused by changes in bioclimatological factors, increased reports of resistance to insecticides and larvicides, and low community participation in vector control, resulting in an uncontrolled abundance of the species. Therefore, an alternative, safe, effective, and evidence-based vector control approach is needed. This narrative review, conducted via the SANRA protocol encompassing PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2014-2024), aims to (1) synthesize current Insect-Specific Flavivirus

Management of Myzus persicae in pepper still depends largely on insecticides, but resistance limits the long-term effectiveness of chemical control. Here, we used a microbiome-guided approach to identify rhizosphere bacteria associated with aphid infestation and to evaluate their potential for aphid suppression. Pepper plants were grown in soil collected from nine field sites, and rhizosphere bacterial communities were profiled using full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing. After excluding soils with extreme physicochemical profiles, aphid-infested plants exhibited distinct rhizosphere bacterial

Six subclass III C6 transcription factors (TFs) with unique Zn(II)2Cys6 binuclear cluster DNA-binding (C6 or GAL4) domain not locating at N-terminus are underexplored in Beauveria bassiana, a wide-spectrum mycoinsecticide. Here, we report that three C6 TFs with the GAL4 domain locating at C-terminus (TF1), between C-terminal and central regions (TF2) and between central and N-terminal regions (TF3) are largely differentiated in function. TF1 was proven to localize in both nucleus and cytoplasm and regulate host immune repression in the course of host hemocoel colonization instead of cuticular
