Cephalometric craniofacial features of patients with Sagliker syndrome: a primary analysis of our experience.

BACKGROUND: Sagliker syndrome (SS) is characterized by a severe uglifying facial appearance resulting from untreated or inadequately treated secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). To date, the craniofacial morphology of patients with SS has yet to be analyzed. The present research sought to cephalometrically evaluate the craniofacial features of patients with SS and to perform an in-depth analysis of their serum biochemical parameters, with the aim of furthering the theoretical basis for the early diagnosis and prevention of SS. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 9 patients who fulfilled

Comparison of the Mesiodistal Angulations of Canine and Molar Teeth in Different Types of Orthodontic Malocclusions: A Retrospective Study.

(i) Objective: Changes in the mesiodistal axial angulations of teeth with orthodontic treatment have been a topic of interest in orthodontics for many years, although it has not been clarified enough yet. Therefore, this present study aimed to compare mesiodistal axial angulations of canine and first molar teeth by measuring from pre- and post-treatment panoramic radiographs in different types of orthodontic malocclusions. (ii) Materials and Methods: In the study, the mesiodistal axial angulation angles of the lower-upper canines (teeth numbered 13, 23, 33, and 43) and first molars (teeth numb

Role of basic biological sciences in clinical orthodontics: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic therapy is based on interaction between mechanics and biology. Basic biologic research aims at developing a better understanding of the mechanism of transformation of mechanical energy into biologic reactions, and exposing the reasons for iatrogenic tissue damage in orthodontics. Previous research has shown that inflammation is a major part of the biologic response to orthodontic forces. In inflammation, signal molecules that originate in remote diseased organs can reach strained paradental tissues and exacerbate the inflammatory process, leading to tissue damage. ME

Four TADs supported Herbst mechanics: A case report.

The Herbst appliance (HA) is considered an efficient method to treat class II malocclusion characterized by mandibular retrusion. Nevertheless, HA is although hampered by side effects reducing its therapeutic potentialities. The association between HA and TADs in the lower arch has proved to be very effective in controlling lower incisor flaring. This case report shows that the insertion of TADs in both arches offers a satisfactory control of the vertical dimension, by avoiding a maxillary clockwise inclination.

Effects of twin-block appliance on the anatomy of pharyngeal airway passage (PAP) in class II malocclusion subjects.

BACKGROUND: The use of functional appliances for the correction of retrognathic mandible is very common in orthodontics. Similar appliances known as oral appliances are also frequently used in adults for the treatment of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Many studies have reported improvement of pharyngeal airway passage (PAP) dimensions following functional appliance therapy in children and oral appliance therapy in adults. There is only one study in the literature that discussed the effect of oral appliance therapy on posterior pharyngeal wall thickness (PPWT) among subjects wi

Orthodontically induced eruption of a horizontally impacted maxillary central incisor.

This case report presents the clinical features and periodontal findings in a patient with a horizontally impacted maxillary central incisor that had been exposed and aligned after a closed-eruption surgical technique. By combining 3 treatment stages-maxillary expansion, crown exposure surgery, and induced eruption-the horizontally impacted incisor was successfully moved into proper position. The patient finished treatment with a normal and stable occlusion between the maxillary and mandibular arches, and an adequate width of attached gingiva, even in the area surrounding the crown. The 5-year

Treatment of a case of skeletal class II malocclusion with temporomandibular joint disorder using miniscrew anchorage.

At the present time, there are no reports in the literature on the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) by intrusion of molars using mini-screws. This case report describes the treatment for a female patient, aged 19 years seven months, with a TMD and an excessive lower anterior facial height. Overjet and overbite were +5.0 mm and +0.5 mm, respectively. The patient had a history of orthodontic treatment in which her first premolars were all extracted. During the first orthodontic treatment, a clockwise mandibular rotation was observed as a result of the increase of posterior den

[Aesthetic repercussions of the class II treatment on the profile: comparative study Distal Activ Concept (DAC)/Extra-Oral Force (EOF)].

In the past orthodontists frequently used extra-oral force to slow down skeletal growth in their treatment of Class II malocclusions; more modern practice relies less on applying distal force to the maxilla than on stimulating forward growth of the mandible. Does this change in therapeutic design have any repercussions in facial esthetics? To evaluate the impact of treatment on the appearance of the profile, we conducted a study with 64 patients in the adolescent dentition stage with a Class II, division 1 malocclusions. None had teeth extracted or preliminary orthodontic treatment. We divided

Congenitally missing mandibular second premolars: clinical options.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital absence of mandibular second premolars affects many orthodontic patients. The orthodontist must make the proper decision at the appropriate time regarding management of the edentulous space. These spaces can be closed or left open. IMPLICATIONS: If the space will be left open for an eventual restoration, the keys during orthodontic treatment are to create the correct amount of space and to leave the alveolar ridge in an ideal condition for a future restoration. If the space will be closed, the clinician must avoid any detrimental alterations to the occlusion and the f

Treatment of a patient with unerupted mandibular molars, lateral open bite, and class II subdivision malocclusion.

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with three unerupted mandibular right molars and a lateral open bite in a Class II subdivision malocclusion with mandibular arch asymmetry. Sequential uprighting and traction of the three mandibular unerupted teeth with a compressed open-coil spring, reverse sliding jig, and light force system was used in the treatment and are described in detail. The results remained stable during the 8-year 6-month posttreatment and 4-year postretention periods.
