BACKGROUND: Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) is increasingly used in studies and clinical practice. However, the best protocol is controversially discussed and whether it exhibits more radiation exposure compared to conventional protocols. Thus, the purpose of the study was to determine optimal tube current settings for DECT in a 3D-printed anthropomorphic phantom of the neck.
METHODS: A 3D-printed iodinated ink based phantom of a contrast enhanced CT of the neck was imaged. Six dual-energy multi-detector computed tomography scans were performed with six different tube currents (80 kVp:

BACKGROUND: Extended soft tissue defects of the face are difficult to reconstruct, and autologous tissue transfers usually lead to poor cosmetic and functional outcomes. We judged that composite tissue transplantation could be valuable in facial reconstructive surgery.
METHODS: We transplanted the central and lower face of a brain-dead woman onto a woman aged 38 years who had suffered amputation of distal nose, both lips, chin, and adjacent parts of the cheeks. Transplantation consisted of revascularisation of right and left facial arteries and veins (ischaemic time 4 h), mucosal repair of or

Reconstructing phylogeny from morphological data remains mired in investigator biases, including subjective inclusion and discretization of phenotypic variation. Geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistical analyses provide an alternative array of tools for studying variation in morphological traits. However, direct analysis of landmark data is often unreliable for phylogeny reconstruction. Morphological variation is typically highly correlated among nearby landmarks and may evolve saltationally between adaptive peaks instead of gradually, thereby violating the assumptions of typical c

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, 3-dimensional (3D) printing has been widely used in regenerative medicine research and other fields because of its ability to customize macroscopic morphology and precisely control microstructure. Polymer scaffolds are 1 of the commonly used 3D bioprinting materials for defect repair and have recently been a research focus. Our article explored the bone-formation accelerating effect of 3D-printed porous scaffold Poly(glycerol sebacate) [PGS] in the critical bone defect of an enhancing rabbit mandibular model. Also, we overview and summarize the classification of

BACKGROUND: Skeletal dentofacial asymmetry decreases patient's attractiveness by deteriorating symmetry of facial appearance which is of great significance to individuals. Surgery-first orthognathic approach manifests its advantages of shortening treatment time and improving patient's quality of life. However, current literature on surgery-first approach mainly focuses on treating prognathism, overlooking its efficacy in improving facial symmetry of skeletal dentofacial asymmetry patients. This study aimed to assess SFA's efficacy in improving facial appearance by analyzing morphological featu

Lower third molars (M3M) are the most frequent impacted teeth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between M3M position and gonial angle. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted. The study population included patients with unilateral or bilateral M3M and underwent Cone Beam Computed Tomography. A morphometric analysis of the mandible was performed after three-dimensional reconstruction, recording gonial angle (GA), ramus high, ramus width, ramus divergency, and retromolar space. GA was the primary predictor variable. The primary outcome variable was the position o

OBJECTIVE: Matrix-associated chondrocyte transplantation is routinely used in joints of the extremities but not in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
STUDY DESIGN: We report the first case series in 7 patients of a tissue engineering approach to regenerate severely degraded articulating surfaces in the TMJ by simultaneously completely resurfacing both the mandibular condyle and the articular eminence/glenoid fossa with a commercially available collagen sponge seeded with autologous cells stabilized within a fibrin matrix. To facilitate healing, we temporarily employed a silicone membrane to p

This clinical and radiographic study investigated the use of transport distraction osteogenesis in unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis patients. Six patients aged between 4 and 8 years were selected for the study; the mean preoperative maximal inter-incisal opening (MIO) was 3.5mm without lateral and protrusive mandibular movements. The ankylotic mass along with the posterior border of the ascending ramus was exposed via 'lazy-S' incision. A gap arthroplasty was performed, followed by a 'reverse L' osteotomy on the posterior border of the ramus. In-house manufactured extraoral d

Crouzon syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by cranial synostosis, hypertelorism, orbital proptosis, parrot-beaked nose, short upper lip, hypoplastic maxilla, and a relative mandibular prognathism, without extremity involvement. Surgical intervention should occur at the onset of progressive craniosynostosis to treat or to prevent intracranial hypertension and visual impairment. Throughout developing countries, early treatment is often not a viable option. Often, the only option for treatment is through humanitarian missions. Appropriate preselection of surgical patients is

A 3D cephalometric analysis method from scanner acquisition has been developed thanks to a long collaboration between Dr Treil and the Department of Orthodontics in Toulouse III University. It allows a perfect knowledge of maxillo-facial architecture using fourteen landmarks related to the neuromatricial axis of facial growth. These landmarks can be identified without ambiguity. The marking of each tooth relative to dental arches (gravity centre coordinates and torque and tipping of each tooth), and the location of arches relative to maxillo-facial frame are given by the analysis.
