Out of sight but not gone: Sero-surveillance for cattle grubs, Hypoderma spp., in western Canada between 2008 and 2010.

Despite the lack of evidence of clinically infected cattle in western Canada since the late 1990s there is persistent evidence from serological sampling that warble fly infections remain endemic. As part of a general survey of cattle parasites conducted on calves entering a feedlot in southern Alberta sera were tested for the presence of anti-Hypoderma antibodies using an established ELISA. Calves for the study were drawn from auction markets in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia and serum samples were collected, according to a randomization scheme, as the calves entered a si

The presence of anti-Hypoderma antibodies in udder milk samples, and correlation with selected parameters of dairy performance.

Hypodermosis is responsible for significant economic losses and remains a current problem in animal husbandry. This study determined the extent of Hypoderma spp. invasion in north-eastern Poland in dairy herds. The extent of the invasion, determined on the basis of positive results of an ELISA assay (Bovine Hypodermosis Milk Screening of Institut Pourquier), varied in herds. Statistical analysis performed on the results of milk productivity and content of basic components revealed a decrease in the milk yield and changes in milk protein in animals revealing positive, doubtful and negative resu

Surgical removal of a Cuterebra larva from the cervical trachea of a cat.

A case of cervical intratracheal cuterebriasis is reported. The cat was presented with intermittent dyspnea of 3 days' duration. The larva was located during tracheoscopy but was not retrievable. Surgical exploration of the cervical region was performed, and the larva was removed. All clinical signs resolved upon recovery from surgery. The larva was identified as a second instar Cuterebra sp.

Occurrence and biology of goat warble fly infestation by Przhevalskiana silenus (Diptera, Oestridae) in Iran.

Goat warble fly infestation (GWFI) by the larvae of Przhevalskiana silenus is endemic in goats of semi-hilly and mountainous regions of Iran. This myiasis has severe economic impact on tanning industries, and it is responsible for impaired milk and meat production, growth retardation and carcass depreciation. To estimate the prevalence of GWFI in the southern areas of Iran, from October 2006 to December 2008, the carcasses of 8000 goats at a Shiraz slaughterhouse and 1000 each at Marvdasht and Darab cities were examined weekly for the presence of P. silenus larvae. In addition, appropriate sec…

Experimental skin lesions from larvae of the bot fly Dermatobia hominis.

Skin biopsies from larvae of Rattus norvegicus, experimentally infested with Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus Jr) (Diptera: Cuterebridae), were processed for histopathological studies. Two days after infestation, the first-stage larvae (L1) were located deep in the dermis, surrounded by an inflamed area infiltrated predominantly by neutrophils. On the fourth day a thin necrotic layer could be seen close to the larvae, surrounded by large numbers of neutrophils, lymphocytes, macrophages with a few eosinophils and mast cells. A small warble was formed after the fourth day, increasing in size until t

Seasonal variations in the abundance of Gasterophilus spp. larvae in donkeys in northern Jordan.

One hundred and five donkeys were examined over a 12-month period for the presence of Gasterophilus spp. larvae in their stomachs. G. intestinalis and G. nasalis were found, but there was a distinct seasonal variation in their abundance. The numbers of second-stage larvae (L2) peaked during the early winter and early summer, but they were absent or at low levels during the early spring and early autumn. This suggests that there are two periods of adult fly activity (late autumn and late spring) for both G. nasalis and G. intestinalis. Third-stage larvae (L3) were found throughout the year, but

[Treatment of oestriasis and hypodermosis in red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) and roe deer (Capreolus c. capreolus) with ivermectin (Ivomec)].

In two test areas in Austria (Burgenland, Lower Austria) ivermectin has been used to control oestrinosis and hypodermosis in red- and roe deer since many years (1985 and 1987, respectively). The results until 1992, using the injectable solution Ivomec-injection 1% only, have been reported (Kutzer, 1994). In continuation of these tests Ivomec-Praemix 0.6% was examined and it turned out that the treatment was extremely successful. In practice Ivomec-Praemix 0.6% has to be given preference due to its stability. The most favourable dosage for red- and roe deer was 2 x 0.4 mg ivermectin/kg bodyweig

Cannibalism and predation behaviour of the blowfly, Chrysomyia albiceps (Wiedemann) larvae (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Chrysomyia albiceps is considered as a carrion inhabitant and is essentially scavenger. It is among the first species to arrive at carrion a … medical and veterinary importance owing to their significant role in causing the different kind of myiasis of man and animals. The second instar is less inclined than the early 3rd instar to serve as a predator. The numerous heavily sclerotized spines and fleshy processes of the robust and powerful preyer early 3rd instar larvae help in subduing the prey …
