All fields of science depend on mathematical models. Occam's razor refers to the principle that good models should exclude parameters beyond those minimally required to describe the systems they represent. This is because redundancy can lead to incorrect estimates of model parameters from data, and thus inaccurate or ambiguous conclusions. Here, we show how deep learning can be powerfully leveraged to apply Occam's razor to model parameters. Our method, FixFit, uses a feedforward deep neural network with a bottleneck layer to characterize and predict the behavior of a given model from its inpu

Objective. Ultrasound-assisted orthopaedic navigation held promise due to its non-ionizing feature, portability, low cost, and real-time performance. To facilitate the applications, it was critical to have accurate and real-time bone surface segmentation. Nevertheless, the imaging artifacts and low signal-to-noise ratios in the tomographical B-mode ultrasound (B-US) images created substantial challenges in bone surface detection. In this study, we presented an end-to-end lightweight US bone segmentation network (UBS-Net) for bone surface detection.Approach. We presented an end-to-end lightweig

While pre-trained neural networks, e.g., for diagnosis from electrocardiograms (ECGs), are already available and show remarkable performance, their lack of transparency prevents translation to clinical practice. Recently, an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) software framework was proposed which uses post-hoc interpretability methods to reveal regions of interest (ROIs) within an ECG that were relevant for the network's decision. However, it is not clear how these correlate with the evidence-based ECG features used by cardiologists. Hence, here we propose an extended version of the XAI

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Multi-grade osteoarthritis (OA) deterioration monitoring in the daily paradigm using Vibroarthrography (VAG) is very challenging due to two difficulties: (1) the composition of VAG signals is complex in the daily paradigm where friction is intensified because of weight-bearing movements. (2) VAG signal samples near the decision boundary of adjacent deterioration grades are easy to be misclassified. The majority of existing works only focus on the binary classification of OA, providing inadequate assistance in instructing physicians to develop treatment plans based on

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common digestive system tumor with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. At present, the use of computer-assisted colonoscopy technology to detect polyps is relatively mature, but it still faces some challenges, such as missed or false detection of polyps. Therefore, how to improve the detection rate of polyps more accurately is the key to colonoscopy. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an improved YOLOv5-based cancer polyp detection method for colorectal cancer. The method is designed with a new structure called P-C3 incorporated into the backbone and ne

Automated segmentation of biomedical image has been recognized as an important step in computer-aided diagnosis systems for detection of abnormalities. Despite its importance, the segmentation process remains an open challenge due to variations in color, texture, shape diversity and boundaries. Semantic segmentation often requires deeper neural networks to achieve higher accuracy, making the segmentation model more complex and slower. Due to the need to process a large number of biomedical images, more efficient and cheaper image processing techniques for accurate segmentation are needed. In t

Accuratedetection and segmentation of brain tumors is critical for medical diagnosis. However, current supervised learning methods require extensively annotated images and the state-of-the-art generative models used in unsupervised methods often have limitations in covering the whole data distribution. In this paper, we propose a novel framework Two-Stage Generative Model (TSGM) that combines Cycle Generative Adversarial Network (CycleGAN) and Variance Exploding stochastic differential equation using joint probability (VE-JP) to improve brain tumor detection and segmentation. The CycleGAN is t

Image segmentation is a critical and challenging endeavor in the field of medicine. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a helpful method for locating any abnormal brain tissue these days. It is a difficult undertaking for radiologists to diagnose and classify the tumor from several pictures. This work develops an intelligent method for accurately identifying brain tumors. This research investigates the identification of brain tumor types from MRI data using convolutional neural networks and optimization strategies. Two novel approaches are presented: the first is a novel segmentation te

After nasal bone fractures, fractures of the mandible are the most frequently encountered injuries of the facial skeleton. Accurate identification of fracture locations is critical for effectively managing these injuries. To address this need, JawFracNet, an innovative artificial intelligence method, has been developed to enable automated detection of mandibular fractures in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. JawFracNet employs a 3-stage neural network model that processes 3-dimensional patches from a CBCT scan. Stage 1 predicts a segmentation mask of the mandible in a patch, which is

Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) have gained popularity as they allow for an effortless and natural interaction between the user and the machine by processing information gathered from a single or multiple sensing modalities and transcribing user intentions to the desired actions. Their operability depends on frequent periodic re-calibration using newly acquired data due to their adaptation needs in dynamic environments, where test-time data continuously change in unforeseen ways, a cause that significantly contributes to their abandonment and remains unexplored by the Ultrasound-based (US-base

This paper explores the global issue of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs), impacting around 1.71 billion people worldwide. WMSDs, causing pain primarily in the neck, shoulders, and lower back, not only affect individual workers negatively but also result in increased productivity losses and societal costs. Current prevention strategies involve subjective surveys and ergonomic assessments using tools like RULA, REBA, and NIOSH lifting equation. However, these methods have limitations in pinpointing specific improvements for tasks, as evident in cases where high-risk tasks, accordin

The increase in Cervical Spondylosis cases and the expansion of the affected demographic to younger patients have escalated the demand for X-ray screening. Challenges include variability in imaging technology, differences in equipment specifications, and the diverse experience levels of clinicians, which collectively hinder diagnostic accuracy. In response, a deep learning approach utilizing a ResNet-34 convolutional neural network has been developed. This model, trained on a comprehensive dataset of 1235 cervical spine X-ray images representing a wide range of projection angles, aims to mitig

Cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR) is a significant cause of vision loss. Regular screening is crucial but challenging in resource-limited settings. A convolutional neural network is a state-of-the-art deep learning technique to generate automatic diagnoses from retinal images. However, there are limited numbers of CMVR images to train the model properly. Transfer learning (TL) is a strategy to train a model with a scarce dataset. This study explores the efficacy of TL with different pre-trained weights for automated CMVR classification using retinal images. We utilised a dataset of 955 retinal

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 is a serious threat to human health. Traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can realize medical image segmentation, whilst transformers can be used to perform machine vision tasks, because they have a better ability to capture long-range relationships than CNNs. The combination of CNN and transformers to complete the task of semantic segmentation has attracted intense research. Currently, it is challenging to segment medical images on limited data sets like that on COVID-19.
METHODS: This study proposes a lightweight transformer+CNN model, in which

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Valvular heart diseases (VHDs) are one of the dominant causes of cardiovascular abnormalities that have been associated with high mortality rates globally. Rapid and accurate diagnosis of the early stage of VHD based on cardiac phonocardiogram (PCG) signal is critical that allows for optimum medication and reduction of mortality rate.
METHODS: To this end, the current study proposes novel deep learning (DL)-based high-performance VHD detection frameworks that are relatively simpler in terms of network structures, yet effective for accurately detecting multiple VHDs.

OBJECTIVE: Characterizing and enumerating rib fractures are critical to informing clinical decisions, yet in-depth characterization is rarely performed because of the manual burden of annotating these injuries on computed tomography (CT) scans. We hypothesized that our deep learning model, FasterRib , could predict the location and percentage displacement of rib fractures using chest CT scans.
METHODS: The development and internal validation cohort comprised more than 4,700 annotated rib fractures from 500 chest CT scans within the public RibFrac. We trained a convolutional neural network to
