[The problem of the aged person living alone: a methodological proposal for a pilot project of the aged person's and university student's cohabitation].

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the outcome of a promotion program for the cohabitation between healthy living-alone-old person and university student. The study aimed to highlight the benefits of both the parts in terms of psyco-physical behaviour of the old subject and of logistic and financial support for the student. The survey was carried out between 1998 and 2000 on voluntary couples of old person-university student living in Padua. The study quantified the level of satisfaction of the material needs of the both parts and it also showed the affective relationship estab

Neural correlates of covert face processing: fMRI evidence from a prosopagnosic patient.

Brains can perceive or recognize a face even though we are subjectively unaware of the existence of that face. However, the exact neural correlates of such covert face processing remain unknown. Here, we compared the fMRI activities between a prosopagnosic patient and normal controls when they saw famous and unfamiliar faces. When compared with objects, the patient showed greater activation to famous faces in the fusiform face area (FFA) though he could not overtly recognize those faces. In contrast, the controls showed greater activation to both famous and unfamiliar faces in the FFA. Compare

Disruptions to human speed perception induced by motion adaptation and transcranial magnetic stimulation.

To investigate the underlying nature of the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on speed perception, we applied repetitive TMS (rTMS) to human V5/MT+ following adaptation to either fast- (20 deg/s) or slow (4 deg/s)-moving grating stimuli. The adapting stimuli induced changes in the perceived speed of a standard reference stimulus moving at 10 deg/s. In the absence of rTMS, adaptation to the slower stimulus led to an increase in perceived speed of the reference, whilst adaptation to the faster stimulus produced a reduction in perceived speed. These induced changes in speed perce

Neuromagnetic activity in medial parietooccipital cortex reflects the perception of visual motion during eye movements.

We usually perceive a stationary, stable world despite coherent visual motion induced by eye movements. This astonishing example of perceptual invariance results from a comparison of visual information with internal reference signals (nonretinal signals) predicting the visual consequences of an eye movement. The important consequence of this concept is that our subjective percept of visual motion reflects the outcome of this comparison rather than retinal image slip. To localize the cortical networks underlying this comparison, we compared magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses under two condi

Hemispheric asymmetry in global/local processing: effects of stimulus position and spatial frequency.

We examined the neural mechanisms of functional asymmetry between hemispheres in the processing of global and local information of hierarchical stimuli by measuring hemodynamic responses with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In a selective attention task, subjects responded to targets at the global or local level of compound letters that were (1) broadband in spatial-frequency spectrum and presented at fixation; (2) broadband and presented randomly to the left or the right of fixation; or (3) contrast balanced (CB) to remove low spatial frequencies (SFs) and presented at fixation.

The pattern and time course of somatosensory changes in the human UVB sunburn model reveal the presence of peripheral and central sensitization.

The ultraviolet B (UVB) sunburn model was characterized with a comprehensive battery of quantitative sensory testing (QST). Primary hyperalgesia in UVB-irradiated skin and secondary hyperalgesia in adjacent nonirradiated skin were studied in 22 healthy subjects 24h after irradiation with UVB at 3-fold minimal erythema dose of a skin area 5 cm in diameter at the thigh and compared to mirror-image contralateral control areas. The time course of hyperalgesia over 96 h was studied in a subgroup of 12 subjects. Within the sunburn area, cold hyperesthesia (P=.01), profound generalized hyperalgesia t

Cognitive functions and the state of nonspecific brain systems in panic disorders.

A total of 93 patients with panic disorders and 36 healthy control subjects were studied. Clinical-neurological, psychometric, neuropsychological, and neurophysiological (auditory cognitive evoked potentials) investigations were performed. Patients with typical panic disorders were characterized by increased levels of anxiety and depression, along with impairments to cognitive functions in the form of decreases in short-term memory and attention, as compared with healthy subjects. Patients with atypical panic disorders differed from patients with typical panic disorders in having lower levels

Audiological evaluation of affected members from a Dutch DFNA8/12 (TECTA) family.

In DFNA8/12, an autosomal dominantly inherited type of nonsyndromic hearing impairment, the TECTA gene mutation causes a defect in the structure of the tectorial membrane in the inner ear. Because DFNA8/12 affects the tectorial membrane, patients with DFNA8/12 may show specific audiometric characteristics. In this study, five selected members of a Dutch DFNA8/12 family with a TECTA sensorineural hearing impairment were evaluated with pure-tone audiometry, loudness scaling, speech perception in quiet and noise, difference limen for frequency, acoustic reflexes, otoacoustic emissions, and gap de

Short wavelength automated perimetry and tamoxifen use.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Oestrogen receptors (ORs) have been reported to be present in the retina, and the selective oestrogen receptor modulator tamoxifen has been reported to affect colour vision. This study aimed, therefore, to determine whether standard doses of tamoxifen affect visual sensitivities mediated via short wavelength sensitive (SWS) cones. METHODS: Two types of visual fields were measured for middle aged women who were being treated with 20 mg of tamoxifen daily as adjuvant therapy for early stage breast cancer. Visual fields were measured using short wavelength automated perimetry (S

Disinhibition of olfaction: human olfactory performance improves following low levels of alcohol.

We hypothesize that true human olfactory abilities are obscured by cortical inhibition. Alcohol reduces inhibition. We therefore tested the hypothesis that olfactory abilities will improve following alcohol consumption. We measured olfaction in 85 subjects, 45 in a between-subjects design, and 40 in a repeated-measures within-subjects design before and after consumption of alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. Subjects were also assessed using neurocognitive measures of inhibition. Following alcohol consumption, blood alcohol levels ranged from 0.005% to 0.11%. Across subjects, before any cons

Frontoparietal mechanisms supporting attention to location and intensity of painful stimuli.

Attention can profoundly shape the experience of pain. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms that support directed attention to nociceptive information. In the present study, subjects were cued to attend to either the spatial location or the intensity of sequentially presented pairs of painful heat stimuli during a delayed match-to-sample discrimination task. We hypothesized that attention-related brain activation would be initiated after the presentation of the attentional cue and would be sustained through the discrimination task. Conjunction analysis confirmed that bilateral

Predicting early reading skills from pre-reading measures of dorsal stream functioning.

It is well documented that good reading skills may be dependent upon adequate dorsal stream processing. However, the degree to which dorsal stream deficits play a causal role in reading failure has not been established. This study used coherent motion and visual frequency doubling to examine whether dorsal stream sensitivity measured before the commencement of formal reading instruction can predict emerging literacy skills in Grade 1. We demonstrate that over age, IQ and Kindergarten Letter knowledge, pre-reading measures of dorsal stream functioning, as assessed by frequency doubling sensitiv

Speech-perception-in-noise deficits in dyslexia.

Speech perception deficits in developmental dyslexia were investigated in quiet and various noise conditions. Dyslexics exhibited clear speech perception deficits in noise but not in silence. Place-of-articulation was more affected than voicing or manner-of-articulation. Speech-perception-in-noise deficits persisted when performance of dyslexics was compared to that of much younger children matched on reading age, underscoring the fundamental nature of speech-perception-in-noise deficits. The deficits were not due to poor spectral or temporal resolution because dyslexics exhibited normal 'mask

An ipsilateral vestibulothalamic tract adjacent to the medial lemniscus in humans.

We examined 14 patients with acute anteromedial pontomesencephalic infarctions for signs of vestibular and ocular motor dysfunction. In all cases, an isolated ipsilateral deviation of the subjective visual vertical (mean: 4.1, range: 2.7- 6.6) was found without any further signs of vestibular or eye movement disorders like ocular torsion or skew deviation. Distinct lesions in thin-slice brainstem MRI showed an overlap zone in the medial portion of the medial lemniscus. The finding of putative ipsilateral vestibular projections running adjacent to or within the medial lemniscus was subsequently

Layered Mechanisms of Spinal Cord Stimulation for Chronic Pain: A Structured Narrative Review.

OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) entered pain medicine through gate-control theory, but contemporary evidence no longer supports a single-mechanism explanation. This structured narrative review examines the mechanisms proposed for SCS in chronic pain beyond a single-gate explanation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a SANRA-informed structured narrative review using predefined database searches, auditable deduplication, and a mechanistic coding framework. The search yield and deduplication counts were treated as audit data rather than as a PRISMA-style inclusion denominator. Ninet

Stimulation-stability and preclinical bench testing of a new auditory nerve interface.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implants are the flagship sensory neural prosthetic, enabling improved hearing and speech perception in >1 million patients with hearing loss. Despite over three decades of active work and innovations in cochlear implants, hearing performance for complex tasks such as speech-in-noise and music appreciation are still quite limited, putatively due to the challenge of selectively stimulating the auditory nerve with intracochlear electrodes through the bony cochlear wall. Our approach is to more selectively evoke hearing percepts through the development of an Auditory Nerve Imp

Differences in Contrast Sensitivity Measurement With Letters and Gratings.

PURPOSE: To compare contrast sensitivity function (CSF) measurements obtained with either Gabor gratings or Sloan letters using the same LCD-based device, to evaluate the reliability of letter-based CSF testing and to establish normative values in a young healthy population. METHODS: A new computerised chart for psychophysical measurements in clinical settings was used (Vision Chart, CSO). Three related investigations were conducted. In Study 1 (n = 44), a randomised crossover design measured monocular CSF with gratings and letters at four spatial frequencies (1.5, 3.0, 6.0 and 12.0 cycles/de

Guidelines for Reducing the Adverse Effects of Shift Work on Nursing Staff: A Systematic Review.

BackgroundThe increasing demand for care in hospital settings, often at a high intensity, requires organizing work according to 24 h shifts. Nevertheless, shift work (SW), especially at night, alters the circadian rhythm, negatively affecting the psychophysical health of nurses, compromising their quality of life, and jeopardizing patient safety. Shift-work-related diseases (SWDs) can arise from these disruptions.MethodsThis systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of several types of medical, psychotherapeutic, and educational interventions and strategies on shift-work-related diseases
