Ecology and Demography of Free-Roaming Domestic Dogs in Rural Villages near Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Free-roaming dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are of public health and conservation concern because of their potential to transmit diseases, such as rabies, to both people and wildlife. Understanding domestic dog population dynamics and how they could potentially be impacted by interventions, such as rabies vaccination, is vital for such disease control efforts. For four years, we measured demographic data on 2,649 free-roaming domestic dogs in four rural villages in Tanzania: two villages with and two without a rabies vaccination campaign. We examined the effects of body condition, sex, age and

Depression as sickness behavior? A test of the host defense hypothesis in a high pathogen population.

Sadness is an emotion universally recognized across cultures, suggesting it plays an important functional role in regulating human behavior. Numerous adaptive explanations of persistent sadness interfering with daily functioning (hereafter "depression") have been proposed, but most do not explain frequent bidirectional associations between depression and greater immune activation. Here we test several predictions of the host defense hypothesis, which posits that depression is part of a broader coordinated evolved response to infection or tissue injury (i.e. "sickness behavior") that promotes e

Update on carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: a patent review (2008 - 2011).

INTRODUCTION: Carbonic anhydrases (CA) are a family of zinc metalloenzymes (EC 4.2.1.1) found in all organisms, catalyzing the reversible reaction of CO(2) hydration to bicarbonate and a proton. CAs are involved in various physiological reactions including respiration, pH regulation, Na(+) retention, calcification, tumorigenesis, electrolyte secretion, gluconeogenesis, ureagenesis, and lipogenesis. Hence CA inhibitors (CAIs) have long been studied as various classes of systemic anticonvulsants, anti-obesity, anti-pain, anti-tumor and topically acting anti-glaucoma agents, and agents for treati

Encecalol angelate, an unstable chromene from Ageratum conyzoides L.: total synthesis and investigation of its antiprotozoal activity.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In agreement with ethnomedicinal reports, the dichloromethane extract of Ageratum conyzoides L. (Asteraceae) was recently shown to be of considerable activity against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, the etiologic agent of East African Human Trypanosomiasis (East African Sleeping Sickness). Isolated compounds, namely, methoxylated flavonoids as well as the chromene derivative encecalol methyl ether, were less active than the crude extract. The activity of the extract was found to decrease considerably while stored in solution. An unstable compound was detected in

Prediction of latency interval in preterm premature rupture of membranes using sonographic myometrial thickness.

Despite recent advances in perinatal care, Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PPROM) continues to lead to important obstetric complications. This study was aimed to evaluate the role of sonographic measurement of myometrial thickness in prediction of latency interval in women with PPROM. This analytic- descriptive and case- control study was performed on pregnant women with PPROM presenting to Tabriz Al-Zahra Hospital since 2006 to 2008. Thirty pregnant women with PPROM and 30 pregnant women with normal pregnancy were enrolled. Mean gestational age was 30.60 +/- 1.99 week and in case and

A morphological and quantitative immunohistochemical study of the interstitial cells of Cajal in the normal equine intestinal tracts.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) play a key role in the control of intestinal motility and have been implicated in several human gastrointestinal dysmotility syndromes, in equine grass sickness and in other intestinal disorders where a significant reduction in ICC density was observed. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the density of ICC in clinically normal horses, ICC c-Kit expression was evaluated by image analysis in order to obtain numerical data. METHODS: Intestinal samples from the jejunum to small colon from 5 clinically normal horses were studied. Immunoh

Improvement of Sjögren's syndrome after two infusions of rituximab (anti-CD20).

OBJECTIVE: There is evidence to support a dominant role for B cells in the pathophysiology of primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Therefore, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody. METHODS: Sixteen patients who met the new American-European Consensus Group criteria for primary SS and scored >50 on at least 2 of 4 visual analog scales (VAS; 100 mm) evaluating global disease, pain, fatigue, and global dryness received infusions of low-dose rituximab (375 mg/m(2)) at weeks 0 and 1 without steroid premedication. RESULTS: Slow rituximab infusions (100 mg/hour) were wel

Original approach to the individual characteristics associated with forgone healthcare: a study in underprivileged areas, Paris region, France, 2001-2003.

BACKGROUND: The social inequalities in health have endured or even worsened comparatively throughout different social groups since the 1990s. Our objective was to identify the individual characteristics (socio-economic status, living conditions, individuals' social integration, health beliefs, expectations and representation and psychological characteristics) statistically associated with the fact of stating (or not) that healthcare had been forgone because of cost. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, multi-centre study we randomly selected a study sample from five underprivileged areas in the

Public health policy paradoxes: science and politics in the Rockefeller Foundation's hookworm campaign in Mexico in the 1920s.

The origins of US international health endeavors are intertwined with the Progressive Era's faith in science as arbiter of humankind's secular problems. No agency better exemplifies the period's confidence in science than the Rockefeller Foundation's International Health Board (IHB), which set out to export the new public health theory and practice around the world. An examination of the IHB's hookworm program in Mexico in the 1920s demonstrates that, notwithstanding the Rockefeller Foundation's (RF) self-conscious commitment to scientific neutrality, its programs continuously engaged politica

Unplanned Absenteeism: The Role of Workplace and Non-Workplace Stressors.

Unplanned absenteeism (UA), which includes medically certified leave (MC) or emergency leave (EL), among nurses may disturb the work performance of their team and disrupt the quality of patient care. Currently, there is limited study in Malaysia that examines the role of stressors in determining absenteeism among nurses. Therefore, apart from estimating the prevalence and the reasons of UA among nurses in Malaysia, this study aims to determine its stressor-related determinants. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 697 randomly sampled nurses working in Selangor, Malaysia. Most of them w

Divergent Small Tim Homologues Are Associated with TbTim17 and Critical for the Biogenesis of TbTim17 Protein Complexes in Trypanosoma brucei.

The small Tim proteins belong to a group of mitochondrial intermembrane space chaperones that aid in the import of mitochondrial inner membrane proteins with internal targeting signals. Trypanosoma brucei, the protozoan parasite that causes African trypanosomiasis, possesses multiple small Tim proteins that include homologues of T. brucei Tim9 (TbTim9) and Tim10 (TbTim10) and a unique small Tim that shares homology with both Tim8 and Tim13 (TbTim8/13). Here, we found that these three small TbTims are expressed as soluble mitochondrial intermembrane space proteins. Coimmunoprecipitation and mas

Serum programmed death ligand 2 is elevated in cats with mammary carcinoma.

Since the PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 axis plays a vital role in immune tolerance and T-cell exhaustion, having emerged as a target for breast cancer immunotherapy, we investigated the relevance of serum PD-L2 (sPD-L2) levels in feline mammary carcinoma (FMC), to validate its potential use as a diagnostic and/or prognostic biomarker, and as a future target for immunotherapy. To accomplish that, sPD-L2 levels were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and compared between healthy control cats and cats with mammary carcinoma, also stratified by tumor molecular subtype. Statistical associations be
