Testing the usability of a voice control system for assistive robotic arms in people with neurological conditions.

The acceptance and effective use of assistive robotic arms by people with neurological conditions strongly depend on the usability of the control interface. This study evaluated the usability of a voice control system for an assistive robotic arm in both healthy participants and individuals with neurological disorders, and compared its applicability and effectiveness with conventional joystick control. A voice control module based on automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech feedback was developed for a commercially available 6-degree-of-freedom assistive robotic arm. The system was impl

Infant ERPs separate children at risk of dyslexia who become good readers from those who become poor readers.

Dyslexia is heritable and associated with phonological processing deficits that can be reflected in the event-related potentials (ERPs). Here, we recorded ERPs from 2-month-old infants at risk of dyslexia and from a control group to investigate whether their auditory system processes /bAk/ and /dAk/ changes differently. The speech sounds were presented in an oddball paradigm. The children were followed longitudinally and performed a word reading fluency test in second grade. The infant ERPs were subsequently analyzed according to high or low reading fluency in order to find a neurophysiologica

Reversal of laryngotracheal separation in paediatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngotracheal separation (LTS) is an effective and reliable definitive treatment for intractable aspiration. A major advantage of this treatment for intractable aspiration is its' potential reversibility. Should the underlying disorder improve, a reversal of the procedure may be attempted. This has been successfully achieved in the adult population. To our knowledge, no previous cases have been reported of successful reversal of LTS in children. METHODS: A retrospective review from 2003 to 2010 identified four cases of intractable aspiration treated with LTS in our department. Tw

Quality of life outcomes after primary radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the base of tongue.

PURPOSE: To determine quality of life functional outcome after primary radiotherapy for carcinoma of the base of tongue. METHODS AND MATERIALS: At the University of Florida, essentially all patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of tongue are treated with primary continuous-course, external-beam radiotherapy alone or followed by a neck dissection. Fifty-three patients who remained continuously free of disease at 2 to 23 years were eligible to participate in an assessment of the posttreatment quality of their lives. Three patients could not be located for quality of life assessment,

Cognitive and neuropsychological test performance of persons with abnormalities of adolescent development: a test of Waber's hypothesis.

20 children with idiopathic precocious puberty, 27 adolescents with clinically delayed puberty, and an equivalent number of controls matched for age, sex, and IQ were given a battery of tests. These included measures of verbal and spatial abilities and a task assessing hemispheric lateralization using a dichotic listening procedure. Comparisons with matched controls revealed poorer verbal and spatial abilities for precocious males and poorer verbal, but better spatial, abilities for precocious females. Delayed developing males demonstrated superior verbal skills compared with controls, whereas

The natural history of dystonia.

We have analyzed 226 patients with a diagnosis of dystonia musculorum deformans seen in our clinica between 1955 and 1974. These were evenly divided between male and female, but of the 226 patients, 225 were white and only one was black. Forty-two percent were Jewish, as contrasted with 3% Jewish population in the United States. It is interesting to note that a family history was obtained in 28% of both the Jewish and the non-Jewish groups. Thirty of the patients reported a significant viral infection within 3 months preceding the onset of symptoms. Only six patientss had a history of one or m

Use of an intelligent tutoring system for a curriculum on augmentative and alternative communication: Feasibility for implementation.

BACKGROUND: Over 8 million children with disabilities live in Africa and are candidates for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), yet formal training for team members, such as speech-language therapists and special education teachers, is extremely limited. Only one university on the continent provides postgraduate degrees in AAC, and other institutions provide only short modules at an undergraduate level. The need for an introductory training course on AAC that is accessible by university students continent-wide was identified. An online programme, namely an intelligent tutoring sy

Enhanced activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus in deaf and dyslexic adults during rhyming.

Hearing developmental dyslexics and profoundly deaf individuals both have difficulties processing the internal structure of words (phonological processing) and learning to read. In hearing non-impaired readers, the development of phonological representations depends on audition. In hearing dyslexics, many argue, auditory processes may be impaired. In congenitally profoundly deaf individuals, auditory speech processing is essentially absent. Two separate literatures have previously reported enhanced activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus in both deaf and dyslexic adults when contrasted w

[A 86-year-old woman with dementia, gait and speech disturbance, and right hemiparesis].

We report a 86-year-old woman who developed dementia, gait disturbance, speech disturbance, and right hemiparesis. The patient was well until March of 1979 when upon wakening up on one morning she noted slurring of her speech and weakness in her left upper and lower extremities. These symptoms cleared up during the next several months, however, she noted weakness in her left leg again in May 1985. In 1988, her posture became stooped and she walked in small steps. In 1990, she developed memory disturbance and difficulty in naming. In March 1993, she developed weakness in her right hand; she was

Assessment of hearing aid algorithms using a master hearing aid: the influence of hearing aid experience on the relationship between speech recognition and cognitive capacity.

OBJECTIVES: Model-based hearing aid development considers the assessment of speech recognition using a master hearing aid (MHA). It is known that aided speech recognition in noise is related to cognitive factors such as working memory capacity (WMC). This relationship might be mediated by hearing aid experience (HAE). The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of WMC and speech recognition with a MHA for listeners with different HAE. DESIGN: Using the MHA, unaided and aided 80% speech recognition thresholds in noise were determined. Individual WMC capacity was assed using the Verba

Complex syntax in autism spectrum disorders: a study of relative clauses.

BACKGROUND: The few studies that have evaluated syntax in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have yielded conflicting findings: some suggest that once matched on mental age, ASD and typically developing controls do not differ for grammar, while others report that morphosyntactic deficits are independent of cognitive skills in ASD. There is a need for a better understanding of syntax in ASD and its relation to, or dissociation from, nonverbal abilities. AIMS: Syntax in ASD was assessed by evaluating subject and object relative clause comprehension in adolescents and adults diagnosed with ASD with

AI-Generated "Slop" in Online Biomedical Science Educational Videos: Mixed Methods Study of Prevalence, Characteristics, and Hazards to Learners and Teachers.

BACKGROUND: Video-sharing sites such as YouTube (Google) and TikTok (ByteDance) have become indispensable resources for learners and educators. The recent growth in generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, however, has resulted in low-quality, AI-generated material (commonly called "slop") cluttering these platforms and competing with authoritative educational materials. The extent to which slop has polluted science education video content is unknown, as are the specific hazards to learning from purportedly educational videos made by AI without the use of human discretion. OBJECTIVE: Th

Machine Learning Feasibility in Cochlear Implant Speech Perception Outcomes-Moving Beyond Single Biomarkers for Cochlear Implant Performance Prediction.

OBJECTIVES: Machine learning (ML) is an emerging discipline centered around complex pattern matching and large data-based prediction modeling and can improve precision medicine healthcare. Cochlear implants (CI) are highly effective, however, outcomes vary widely, and accurately predicting speech perception performance outcomes between patients remains a challenge. This study aims to evaluate the ability of ML to predict speech perception performance among CI recipients at 6-month post-implantation using only preoperative variables on one of the largest CI datasets to date, with an emphasis pl

Speech outcomes at 5 and 10 years of age after one-stage palatal repair with muscle reconstruction in children born with isolated cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate speech outcomes in children with clefts in the hard and/or soft palate only (CPH/CPS), in order to determine the prevalence of cleft speech characteristics, the change between 5 and 10 years of age, and the difference in occurrence between CPH and CPS. METHODS: A consecutive series of 88 children born with CPH or CPS were included in a retrospective cohort. All participants were treated with one-stage palatal repair using a minimal incision technique with muscle reconstruction (mean age 13 months). Twelve children (14%) received a velophary
