Pancreatic Tumor Growth Prediction with Multiplicative Growth and Image-Derived Motion.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are abnormal growths of hormone-producing cells in the pancreas. Different from the brain in the skull, the pancreas in the abdomen can be largely deformed by the body posture and the surrounding organs. In consequence, both tumor growth and pancreatic motion attribute to the tumor shape difference observable from images. As images at different time points are used to personalize the tumor growth model, the prediction accuracy may be reduced if such motion is ignored. Therefore, we incorporate the image-derived pancreatic motion to tumor growth personalization.

Analysis of the quality of contact-pin fabricated oligonucleotide microarrays.

As the quality of microarrays is critical to successful experiments for data consistency and validity, a reliable and convenient quality control method is needed. We describe a systematic quality control method for large-scale genome oligonucleotide arrays. This method is comprised of three steps to assess the quality of printed arrays. The first step involves assessment of the autofluorescence property of DNA. This step is convenient, quick to perform, and allowed reuse of every array. The second step involves hybridization of arrays with Cy3-labeled 9-mer oligonucleotide target to assess the

A 1-year radiographic evaluation of marginal bone around dental implants.

The aim of this study was to report alveolar bone loss during the first 12 months after implant abutment connection. Marginal bone loss around 62 endosseous root-form implants in 62 patients was measured on periapical radiographs. Changes in bone density were measured by the digital subtraction image radiographic method. At 3-month intervals for 1 year, bone loss around the four types of implants used (standard series, mini series, and hexlock implants of the Steri-Oss system; and 3i standard implants) was investigated. Rapid bone loss around all four implant types occurred in the first 3 mont

Combined supra/infratentorial-transsinus approach to large pineal region tumors.

OBJECT: The authors sought to confirm that the combined supra/infratentorial-transsinus approach offers a safer means of resecting large pineal region tumors than other approaches currently being used. The aforementioned method provides a wider exposure of the pineal region with less brain retraction than the infratentorial-supracerebellar or the occipital-transtentorial approach alone and is applicable to some large and giant tumors of this area. This combined approach was used in six patients to remove large pineal region tumors including four tentorial meningiomas, one pineocytoma, and one

Identification of centerin: a novel human germinal center B cell-restricted serpin.

For naive B cells to mature in response to antigen triggering and become either plasma cells or memory B cells, a complex array of events takes place within germinal centers (GC) of secondary lymphoid organs. With the long-term objective of defining and characterizing molecules that control the generation of GC, we have subtracted RNA messages derived from highly purified B cells at the follicular mantle stage of differentiation from GC B cells. Using this approach, we have identified a novel molecule, centerin, belonging to the family of serine-protease inhibitors or serpins. Transcription of

The effect of 50 Hz magnetic field on GCSmRNA expression in lymphoma B cell by mRNA differential display.

Magnetic fields (MFs) of various characteristics can lead to plethora effects in biological system. From a molecular point of view, we hypothesized that there must be a fundamental difference in gene expression between the MF exposed and the unexposed cell. To identify the classes of genes that are regulated, 0.8 mT 50 Hz MF-induced changes in gene expression were examined in a Daudi cell culture using differential display and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. A candidate cDNA (signatured as MF-CB) that was observed in the sham-exposed but not in MF-exposed cultures was recovere

Normative Study of the Binaural Interaction Component of the Human Auditory Brainstem Response as a Function of Interaural Time Differences.

OBJECTIVES: The binaural interaction component (BIC) of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) is obtained by subtracting the sum of the monaural right and left ear ABRs from the binaurally evoked ABR. The result is a small but prominent negative peak (herein called "DN1"), indicating a smaller binaural than summed ABR, which occurs around the latency of wave V or its roll-off slope. The BIC has been proposed to have diagnostic value as a biomarker of binaural processing abilities; however, there have been conflicting reports regarding the reliability of BIC measures in human subjects. The obje

SRS-Schwab Grade 4 osteotomy for congenital thoracolumbar kyphosis: a minimum of 2 years follow-up study.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Several osteotomy techniques including pedicle subtraction osteotomy and vertebral column resection have been employed in the correction of congenital kyphosis (CK) and satisfying outcomes have been demonstrated. However, the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-Schwab Grade 4 osteotomy, defined as resection of posterior elements, partial vertebral body, and superior adjacent disc, is rarely reported in the treatment of CK. PURPOSE: The present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency and safety of SRS-Schwab Grade 4 osteotomy in patients with CK, and to propose its optimal indi

[Cerebral effects of ketanserin. The influence on hemodynamics and brain metabolism].

Ketanserin, a 5HT2- and alpha 1-receptor antagonist, decreases blood pressure by decreasing systemic vascular resistance without causing reflex cardiac stimulation, while cardiac output remains unchanged. To date, little is known about the effects of ketanserin on cerebral haemodynamics and cerebral metabolism. According to a recently published study, ketanserin seems not to impair cerebral blood flow autoregulation in man. The present study was designed to investigate the influence of ketanserin on cerebral circulation and metabolism, and the cerebrovascular response to CO2 in man. METHODS. T

Noncontrast magnetic resonance angiography outperforms digital subtraction angiography in detecting hibernating below-the-knee arteries and downgrades Transatlantic Inter-Society Consensus and Global Limb Anatomic Staging System scores in chronic limb-threatening ischemia patients.

OBJECTIVE: Current imaging techniques are limited in their ability to accurately characterize below-the-knee diseased vessels. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard but may not visualize some vessels because it relies on nephrotoxic contrast that can fail to reach and opacify distal vessels. Quiescent-interval single shot (QISS) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images patients without exposure to nephrotoxic agents such as gadolinium or ionizing radiation and has been suggested to show "hibernating vessels" that are not visualized on DSA. The aim of this study is to e

An audit of physical waste and fluoroscopy energy consumption in vascular surgery and suggestions for the future.

OBJECTIVE: Hospitals are responsible for 4% to 5% of global greenhouse gas production and are significant contributors to climate change. We sought to understand the contributions of vascular surgery to the carbon footprint of hospitals by examining emissions from fluoroscopy and physical waste across common vascular surgeries. METHODS: Vascular operations at a single tertiary hospital were prospectively audited for physical waste. Additional cases from the same hospital were audited retrospectively for energy expenditure during fluoroscopy digital subtraction angiography (DSA). The fluorosco

Application of the "five-plane method" for the prenatal diagnosis of fetal extrahepatic portosystemic shunts: a retrospective cohort pilot study.

BACKGROUND: A congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (CEPS) is a rare condition. Currently, CEPS is primarily diagnosed in the postnatal period. Most cases are detected using imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT), digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), typically after severe complications arise. Due to the effect of abdominal intestinal gas, the diagnosis of CEPS via postnatal ultrasound is relatively challenging. Conversely, prenatal ultrasound offers a distinct advantage in the diagnosis of CEPS. However, a lack of understanding of thi
