We describe 4 patients who were treated for symptomatic triggering of the index and small fingers with pain on the dorsum of the hand and were found to have impingement of an extensor tendon on the extensor retinaculum at the wrist. All cases were treated by release of the extensor retinaculum and excision of pathologic structures.

UNLABELLED: Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has become the most serious public health crisis of our generation, and vaccines are effective in preventing its infection. Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema is an idiopathic rare benign syndrome, but it could be secondary to aautoimmune diseases. Here, the authors reported the first case of this syndrome's development after COVID-19 vaccination.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old woman presented with hand edema, arthralgia, and morning stiffness, after receiving the second dose of m RNA COVID-19 vaccination. Examinatio

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis, as a zoonotic disease, mainly occurs in horses by Brucella abortus, Brucella canis and Brucella suis. The disease in equines is often asymptomatic, but the clinical signs in horses are mostly characterized by bursitis, arthritis and tenosynovitis.
OBJECTIVES: This study, thus, aimed to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis and its associated risk factors in the Arabian horses of Khuzestan province, South-west Iran.
METHODS: To that end, the blood samples randomly collected from 180 Arabian horses were analyzed for the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies by Ros

BACKGROUND: While the true incidence of retained foreign bodies after surgery is unknown, it has been approximated at 1:5,500 operations overall, with substantially less frequency in hand and upper extremity procedures. Despite the rarity of foreign body retention in hand and upper extremity surgery, universal radiofrequency scanning for electronically-tagged sponges and automatic radiographic evaluation for incorrect sponge counts are employed for all surgical procedures at our institution. We demonstrate the infeasibility of retaining an operative sponge of a standard size in commonly perfor

Background Despite being promising, the use of ultrasound (US) in the assessment of musculoskeletal manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is still limited. Literature on this topic is scarce and the spectrum and clinical relevance of US abnormalities has not yet been outlined. With this paper, we aim to explore the panel of joint and tendon US findings in a group of SLE patients. Methods Twenty-five consecutive SLE patients, with current or medical history of musculoskeletal symptoms, were studied. All patients underwent routine clinical examination and US evaluation. The US exa

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculous involvement of extremities is not rare (50% of osseous disease which is 1-8% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. These are commonly seen in larger joints followed by foot joints. These are termed milder form of tuberculosis as they are paucibacilary and have low chance of spread of infection. Also due to this nature they are often mis-diagnosed and mistreated. Invasive procedures to yield biological sample may be required to diagnose it.
CASE REPORT: We report a series of 7 cases with involvement of extremities. Anatomical sites involved were lateral humeral condyle, fle

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess ultrasound (US) remission in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in clinical remission using different definitions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study including patients with RA in clinical remission defined by disease activity score (DAS28)-erythrocyte rate (ESR) ≤ 2.6 for at least 6 months. Each patient underwent B-mode and power Doppler (PD) assessments of 42 joints and 20 tendons. B-mode and PD signal for synovitis and tenosynovitis (TS) were defined and graded semi-quantitatively (0-3) according to the outcome measure

INTRODUCTION: An increased prevalence of musculoskeletal disease is recognised in diabetes and is a common source of disability. It is known to predominantly affect the upper limbs especially the hand and shoulder. The relationship with other complications of diabetes and glycaemic control is uncertain. We designed this study to clarify these relationships, and to assess differences between types 1 and 2 diabetes.
METHODS: We identified a group of 96 people with established diabetes and examined them for the presence of locomotor disease focussing on the upper limbs. We recorded the mean HbA1

A large chikungunya virus (CHIKV) outbreak emerged in 2005-2006 in the Indian Ocean islands, including Comoros, Mayotte, Mauritius, the Seychelles, and particularly in Reunion Island where 35% of 770,000 inhabitants were infected in 6 months. More recently, circulation of the virus has been documented in Madagascar and in India where CHIKV is spreading rapidly. CHIKV-infected visitors have returned home to nonendemic regions from these islands. We conducted a 14-month prospective observational study on the clinical aspects of CHIKV infection imported to Marseilles, France, in travelers returni

OBJECTIVE: This report summarizes the findings from a consensus process to identify potential classification criteria for polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR).
METHODS: A 3-stage hybrid consensus approach was used to develop potential PMR classification criteria. The first stage consisted of a facilitated meeting of 27 international experts who anonymously rated the importance of 68 potential criteria. The second stage involved a meeting of the experts, who were provided with the results of the first round of ratings and were then asked to re-rate the criteria. In the third stage, the wider acceptanc

Chronic pain in the upper limb associated with repetitive movements of the arm and hand is often seen in patients in the absence of specific pathology such as epicondylitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and tenosynovitis. This condition has been given many names and will be referred to here as non-specific arm pain (NSAP). Previous work has shown elevated vibration thresholds and reduced flare suggesting a neuropathic cause for this condition. In order to examine this further the present study has assessed functions that involve both large sensory nerve fibres (vibration) and small dorsal root fibre

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical picture of arthritis in patients with chronic infection by hepatitis C virus (HCV).
METHODS: Two patient populations were studied. Patients with arthritis and evidence of serum elevation of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) at the consultation were checked for HCV infection. A second group of 303 consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were also checked for the presence of HCV antibodies. All patients attended the outpatient rheumatology unit of a tertiary care teaching hospital. Chronic HCV infection was determined by the presence of viral RNA in

Pasteurella multocida, a small, gram-negative coccobacillus , is part of the normal oral flora of many animals, including the dog and cat. P. multocida is the etiologic agent in a variety of infectious disease syndromes. We have reported 34 cases of infection caused by P. multocida and have reviewed the English literature. P. multocida infections may be divided into three broad groups: 1. Infections resulting from animal bites and scratches : The most common infections caused by P. multocida are local wound infections following animal bites or scratches . Cats are the source of infection in 60

PURPOSE: In rheumatoid arthritis, tenosynovial invasion of tendon is associated with an increased rate of tendon rupture and a worse clinical prognosis compared to noninvasive disease. Tendon is composed predominantly of type I collagen, which can be efficiently degraded by collagenolytic matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), one of which, MT1-MMP, is membrane bound and inhibited by tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2, but not by TIMP-1. The role of MT1-MMP in tendon disease is unknown. In this report, we investigate the potential role of MT1-MMP in invasion of tenosynovium into tendon.

During the last few decades, the role of sports and physical activity has become more and more important in all modern communities. The risk of tendon injury has thus increased, and prevention has become important. Epidemiologic studies are important when planning prevention programs for tendon injuries. Because of individual sport cultures and different sport habits in different countries, national epidemiologic studies are of importance in each individual country.

Finger lesions are a frequent problem because of their functional significance and their small size. Because of this, the radiologist has an important role to play in the correct presurgical diagnosis. The aim of this article is to describe the anatomy and the characteristic US and MR findings of the most common tumor and tumor-like lesions of the fingers, and to discuss the differential diagnosis in cases of unspecific or non-diagnostic findings. We present representative cases selected from 62 patients evaluated at our institution, with pathologic correlation.

The insurance recognition of Work related Muscolo Skeletal Disorders (WMSDs) has been introduced in Italy by the sentences of Constitutional Court n. 179/1988 and 208/1988. Afterwards the National Insurance Institute against work injuries (INAIL) tried to make homogeneous, in the different INAIL regional Departments, the diagnostic protocol of the work related illness associated with repetitive manual activities. Since 1998, indeed, a clinical diagnostic protocol has been used in the different departments. This report describes the Work related Muscolo Skeletal Disorders submitted to the Apuli
