Novel cVEMP procedure reveals sexual dimorphism in peak to trough latency.

INTRODUCTION: Sex difference in latency for cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has been reported in Brown Norway rats. Human investigations of sex difference in VEMP latency have shown inconsistent results, although there are indicators of sexual dimorphism in vestibular function and a higher reporting rate for vestibular disorder in women than in men. METHODS: Sex effects in human VEMP were re-evaluated here using a procedure adapting clinical protocols for higher sensitivity. VEMP was compared between 24 women and 24 men using a novel procedure that (1) controlled neck ten

Implantation of the semicircular canals with preservation of hearing and rotational sensitivity: a vestibular neurostimulator suitable for clinical research.

HYPOTHESIS: It is possible to implant a stimulating electrode array in the semicircular canals without damaging rotational sensitivity or hearing. The electrodes will evoke robust and precisely controlled eye movements. BACKGROUND: A number of groups are attempting to develop a neural prosthesis to ameliorate abnormal vestibular function. Animal studies demonstrate that electrodes near the canal ampullae can produce electrically evoked eye movements. The target condition of these studies is typically bilateral vestibular hypofunction. Such a device could potentially be more widely useful clin

Greater functional activation during galvanic vestibular stimulation is associated with improved postural stability: a GVS-fMRI study.

PURPOSE: Previous literature has shown that standing stability relies on the vestibular system; however, the neural correlates underlying standing stability remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the neural correlates of standing stability using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) following galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five healthy right-handed healthy volunteers were included. Postural stability was measured using the modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction and Balance (mCTSIB), which measures swaying speed and area on hard and

Physiological and behavioral effects of an antivertigo antihistamine in adults.

12 neurologically normal adults were tested before and after administration of meclizine, an over-the-counter medication for motion sickness. A battery of four tests was used: (1) distortion-product otoacoustic emissions, (2) the Repeated Evoked Potentials version of the Auditory Brainstem Response, (3) quantitative electroencephalography measured over the left and right sides of the auditory cortex, and (4) a hand-eye coordination task. The battery required approximately 1.5 hr. to complete. Each subject was tested with the battery in each of eight longitudinal sessions: three times on a cont

Absolute versus relative evaluation of the caloric test results.

A comparative study of clinical cases elucidates the value of "relative" and "absolute" evaluation of the caloric test results, using both parameters slow phase velocity (SPV) and frequency. It is shown that combining both techniques of evaluation, using both parameters, contributes to obtain more nuanced dysfunction patterns. Unilateral peripheral vestibular hypofunction can only be evaluated by using SPV in a relative way according to the formula of Jongkees. Absolute evaluation by both parameters provides indications for central components.

Vestibular tests in the selection of cosmonauts.

Vestibulo-vegetative disorders in cosmonauts and astronauts occurring during space flight compel otolaryngologists to search for vestibular tests enabling a precise evaluation of the activity of the vestibular apparatus and showing disposition to motion sickness. Otoneurological investigation of Polish candidates for cosmonaut status consisted of the following vestibular tests: caloric, rotatory, optokinetic, swinging torsion, statokinesimetric and vestibulo-vegetative. The value of various vestibular tests for aviation and space medicine is presented in this paper, taking into account the res

Effectiveness of Anti-Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide Medication in Vestibular Migraine: A Retrospective Cohort Study in an Asian Population.

BACKGROUND: Migraine and dizziness often coexist, with vestibular migraine (VM) presenting with vestibular symptoms and headaches. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) may be involved in motion-induced symptoms; however, studies on the use of anti-CGRP monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for the treatment of VM have yielded conflicting results. This study aimed to clarify the effectiveness of anti-CGRP mAbs in VM treatment. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study, conducted between 1 January 2021 and 31 March 2023, assessed 12 Japanese patients with VM who were treated with anti-CGR

Treatment of peripheral vestibular dysfunction using photobiomodulation.

Gentamicin, which is still used in modern medicine, is a known vestibular toxic agent, and various degrees of balance problems have been observed after exposure to this pharmacologic agent. Photobiomodulation is a candidate therapy for vertigo due to its ability to reach deep inner ear organs such as the cochlea. Previous reports have suggested that photobiomodulation can improve hearing and cochlea function. However, few studies have examined the effect of photobiomodulation on balance dysfunction. We used a rat model to mimic human vestibulopathy resulting from gentamicin treatment and evalu

Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (VEMP) Triggered by Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS): A Promising Tool to Assess Spinal Cord Function in Schistosomal Myeloradiculopathy.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomal myeloradiculopathy (SMR), the most severe and disabling ectopic form of Schistosoma mansoni infection, is caused by embolized ova eliciting local inflammation in the spinal cord and nerve roots. The treatment involves the use of praziquantel and long-term corticotherapy. The assessment of therapeutic response relies on neurological examination. Supplementary electrophysiological exams may improve prediction and monitoring of functional outcome. Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) triggered by galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a simple, safe, low-cost and

Ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and motion sickness susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: A functional vestibular system is a prerequisite for motion sickness (MS) to occur. The otolithic organs (saccule and utricle) are currently considered to be important in the pathogenesis of MS. Recent investigations have demonstrated that the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP) test is an objective evaluation of utricular function. To date, there is no functional guide that can serve as a diagnostic tool for individual susceptibility to MS. Therefore, we investigated the link between oVEMP and MS susceptibility. METHOD: The oVEMP test was performed on 31 MS susce

Which Effects on Neuroanatomy and Path-Integration Survive? Results of a Randomized Controlled Study on Intensive Balance Training.

Balancing is a complex task requiring the integration of visual, somatosensory and vestibular inputs. The vestibular system is linked to the hippocampus, a brain structure crucial for spatial orientation. Here we tested the immediate and sustained effects of a one-month-long slackline training program on balancing and orientation abilities as well as on brain volumes in young adults without any prior experience in that skill. On the corrected level, we could not find any interaction effects for brain volumes, but the effect sizes were small to medium. A subsequent within-training-group analysi
