INTRODUCTION: Cholera, an infectious diarrheal disease, has been shown to be associated with large scale hydroclimatic processes. The sudden and sporadic occurrence of epidemic cholera is linked with high mortality rates, in part, due to uncertainty in timing and location of outbreaks. Improved understanding of the relationship between pathogenic abundance and climatic processes allows prediction of disease outbreak to be an achievable goal. In this study, we show association of large scale hydroclimatic processes with the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe reported to have begun in Chitungwiza, a c

Outbreaks of diarrheal diseases, including cholera, are related to floods and droughts in regions where water and sanitation infrastructure are inadequate or insufficient. However, availability of data on water scarcity and abundance in transnational basins, are a prerequisite for developing cholera forecasting systems. With more than a decade of terrestrial water storage (TWS) data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, conditions favorable for predicting cholera occurrence may now be determined. We explored lead-lag relationships between TWS in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna basin

When wind or solar energy displace conventional generation, the reduction in emissions varies dramatically across the United States. Although the Southwest has the greatest solar resource, a solar panel in New Jersey displaces significantly more sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter than a panel in Arizona, resulting in 15 times more health and environmental benefits. A wind turbine in West Virginia displaces twice as much carbon dioxide as the same turbine in California. Depending on location, we estimate that the combined health, environmental, and climate benefits from win

The mathematical model describing the dependence of typhoid fever morbidity on water supply and the migration of the population has been constructed. The checking of the model has shown the 95% coincidence of the predicted and actual morbidity. The model has been used for the prognostication of morbidity rate in typhoid fever in new economic development regions, thus making it possible to plan in advance the measures necessary for the prevention of negative consequences connected with the realization of economic development projects.

BACKGROUND: Links between climate change and mental health concerns in the USA are recognised, but research is underdeveloped. Many studies … combined epidemiologically derived exposure-response relationships with projections from five CMIP6 climate models to estimate mental health impacts (mental health difficulties, anxiety, and depression symptom-days) in adults under present-day (2022) and end-of-century (2095) sociodemographic scenarios. We used data from the US Centers for Disease Control & Prev …

The recurrent outbreak of viral pathogens and the possibility of the new pandemics demand the transition to the predictive and integrative computational frameworks instead of reactive one. This review describes computational antiviralism as an integrated approach that uses artificial intelligence (AI), virtual screening, and molecular design tools to identify antiviral targets at the molecular level. We compare deep learning-based structure models with physics-based molecular dynamics (MD) with network pharmacology to describe virus-host interactome dynamics. We also evaluate systems virology

Understanding the niches of intermediate hosts and vectors for environmentally transmitted pathogens is crucial for identifying endemic areas, assessing habitat suitability and targeting interventions. This study focuses on intermediate hosts of intestinal schistosomes, with over 700 million people at risk of lifelong infection. We compared habitat suitability and species interactions across 674 sites in 52 villages in rural Uganda between 2022 and 2024, capturing a severe flooding event. Spatiotemporal models incorporating a polygon-based method to account for space with time as a fixed effec

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) represents a threat to animal and human health, with the ongoing H5N1 outbreak within the H5 2.3.4.4b clade being one of the largest on record. However, it remains unclear what factors have contributed to its intercontinental spread. We use Bayesian additive regression trees, a machine learning method designed for probabilistic modelling of complex nonlinear phenomena, to construct species distribution models (SDMs) for HPAI clade 2.3.4.4b presence. We identify factors driving geospatial patterns of infection and project risk distributions across Europe

Ground-level ozone concentrations rebounded significantly across China in 2022, challenging air quality management and public health. Identifying the drivers of this rebound is crucial for designing effective mitigation strategies. Commonly used methods, such as chemical transport models and machine learning, provide valuable insights but face limitations-chemical transport models are computationally intensive, while machine learning often fails to address confounding factors or establish causality. Here we show that elevated temperatures and increased solar radiation, as primary meteorologica

Atmospheric nitrate, including nitric acid (HNO3), particulate nitrate (pNO3), and organic nitrate (RONO2), is a key atmosphere component with implications for air quality, nutrient deposition, and climate. However, accurately representing atmospheric nitrate concentrations within atmospheric chemistry models is a persistent challenge. A contributing factor to this challenge is the intricate chemical transformations involving HNO3 formation, which can be difficult for models to replicate. Here, we present a novel model framework that utilizes the oxygen stable isotope anomaly (Δ17O) to quantit

Understanding how emerging infectious diseases spread within and between countries is essential to contain future pandemics. Spread to new areas requires connectivity between one or more sources and a suitable local environment, but how these two factors interact at different stages of disease emergence remains largely unknown. Further, no analytical framework exists to examine their roles. Here we develop a dynamic modelling approach for infectious diseases that explicitly models both connectivity via human movement and environmental suitability interactions. We apply it to better understand

Antibiotics have revolutionised medicine in the last century and enabled the prevention of bacterial infections that were previously deemed untreatable. However, in parallel, bacteria have increasingly developed resistance to antibiotics through various mechanisms. When resistant bacteria find their way into terrestrial and aquatic environments, animal and human exposures increase, e.g., via polluted soil, food, and water, and health risks multiply. Understanding the fate and transport of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and the transfer mechanisms of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in a

Globally haemonchosis in sheep is a known devastating disease imposing considerable economic loss. Understanding the environmental risk factors and their role is essentially required to manage the disease successfully. In this study, 14 years' disease data was analysed to predict the risk factors responsible for the occurrence of the disease. Season-wise analysis revealed high incidence during monsoon and post-monsoon and least in winter and summer seasons. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) revealed the significant environmental and remote sensing risk factors contributing to haemonchosis

A wide range of pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites can be transmitted by ticks and can cause diseases, such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Landscape and climate changes are driving the geographic range expansion of important tick species. The morphological identification of ticks is critical for the assessment of disease risk; however, this process is time-consuming, costly, and requires qualified taxonomic specialists. To address this issue, we constructed a tick identification tool that can differentiate the most encountered human-biting tick

Evidences of an association between air pollution and Covid-19 infections are mixed and inconclusive. We conducted an ecological analysis at regional scale of long-term exposure to air-borne particle matter and spread of Covid-19 cases during the first wave of epidemics. Global air pollution and climate data were calculated from satellite earth observation data assimilated into numerical models at 10 km resolution. Main outcome was defined as the cumulative number of cases of Covid-19 in the 14 days following the date when > 10 cumulative cases were reported. Negative binomial mixed effect mod

Novel, climate-resilient, high-yielding crop varieties are urgently needed to address food security concerns for the world's growing population. Genome editing techniques have enabled the development of new crop varieties more cheaply, easily, and quickly than conventional breeding methods. A key concern with transgenic crops is producing transgene-free varieties. Transgene-free crops can be developed using new plant breeding technologies and can play a pivotal role in sustainable agriculture. Several techniques can bypass traditional methods for producing edited plants by using hypercompact n

The mud clam (Geloina coaxans) is an ecologically important mangrove-associated bivalve. However, its sensitivity to climate warming and future growth responses remain insufficiently understood. By jointly analyzing habitat suitability predictions from an Ensemble Species Distribution Model (ESDM) with growth simulations from a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the mud clam's thermal sensitivity and growth dynamics under climate change. The ESDM results indicated that suitable habitats are concentrated within Indo-Pacific mangrove regions, inc
