Biological trajectories toward universal computation: Transposons and chaperone-assisted folding as models of molecular logic.

The question of whether biological systems implement computation-like processes is central to synthetic biology and theoretical biophysics. This paper proposes a formal conceptual framework in which two well-characterized molecular mechanisms-transposable elements ("jumping genes") and chaperone-mediated protein folding-are modeled as computational systems. We argue that transposons, exemplified by the ONSEN retrotransposon in Arabidopsis thaliana, implement signal-responsive genome state transitions formally analogous to probabilistic finite-state machine computation, with capacity for comput

Neural correlates of lexicon and grammar: evidence from the production, reading, and judgment of inflection in aphasia.

Are the linguistic forms that are memorized in the mental lexicon and those that are specified by the rules of grammar subserved by distinct neurocognitive systems or by a single computational system with relatively broad anatomic distribution? On a dual-system view, the productive -ed-suffixation of English regular past tense forms (e.g., look-looked) depends upon the mental grammar, whereas irregular forms (e.g., dig-dug) are retrieved from lexical memory. On a single-mechanism view, the computation of both past tense types depends on associative memory. Neurological double dissociations bet

[The use of CAD/CAM techniques in the repair of complex orbital fractures and the reposition of enophthalmos].

OBJECTIVE: To reconstruct the three-dimensional (3 D) imaging and computer-generated models of the complex orbital fractures, and to develop a Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacture (CAD/CAM) system for orbital fracture repair. METHODS: We carried out study on 12 patients with orbital fractures from August 2003 to March 2004 in the Ninth People's Hospital. Before the orbital fracture repair, helical computer tomography scanning was applied to acquire the 3 D imaging data of the patient's orbits. The 3 D imaging data were then transferred to a CAD/CAM interactive program for image pr

Establishing a reliable visual function test and applying it to screening optic nerve disease in onchocercal communities.

The computer Controlled Video Perimetry (CCVP) is a computer screening test for detecting visual function loss caused by onchocerciasis, glaucoma, etc. Installed on portable computers, the CCVP has been shown to be high acceptability in field community investigation. However, it is regarded to be difficult in obtaining reliable results from portable computer screening tests because of human behavioural variants and the lack of standard testing environment. In this paper, we propose an architecture for implementing a more reliable CCVP system. In particular, a self-organising neural network is

Design and development of an automated and non-contact sensing system for continuous monitoring of plant health and growth.

An automated system was designed and built to continuously monitor plant health and growth in a controlled environment using a distributed system approach for operational control and data collection. The computer-controlled system consisted of a motorized turntable to present the plants to the stationary sensors and reduce microclimate variability among the plants. Major sensing capabilities of the system included machine vision, infrared thermometry, time domain reflectometry, and micro-lysimeters. The system also maintained precise growth-medium moisture levels through a computer-controlled

Flexible Sensorimotor Computations through Rapid Reconfiguration of Cortical Dynamics.

Neural mechanisms that support flexible sensorimotor computations are not well understood. In a dynamical system whose state is determined by interactions among neurons, computations can be rapidly reconfigured by controlling the system's inputs and initial conditions. To investigate whether the brain employs such control mechanisms, we recorded from the dorsomedial frontal cortex of monkeys trained to measure and produce time intervals in two sensorimotor contexts. The geometry of neural trajectories during the production epoch was consistent with a mechanism wherein the measured interval and

Computer assisted pyeloplasty in children: the retroperitoneal approach.

PURPOSE: We describe the first series of computer assisted retroperitoneoscopic pyeloplasty in children using the Da Vinci Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Mountainview, California) with regard to setup, method, operation time, complications and preliminary outcome. The small space in the retroperitoneum of children and larger instruments of the computer assisted surgical system make modification of the retroperitoneal access necessary. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 13 children with a median age of 6.7 years (range 3.5 to 16.2) and ureteropelvic junction obstruction 15 pyeloplasties wer

Nonlinear closed-loop control system for intracranial pressure regulation.

A nonlinear closed-loop control system with flat pressure-versus-flow characteristics that is aimed at regulating intracranial pressure (ICP) by adjusting the volume of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) was designed, built, and tested. The control system design allows both the pressure setpoint and hysteresis to be adjusted to overcome the difficulties inherent in differential pressure-activated, fixed resistance, open-loop shunts. A dynamic six-compartment bench-top fluid system, which mimics the cerebral spinal fluid system, was designed, built, and tested. A computer simulation was developed whic

Catecholamines alter the intrinsic variability of cortical population activity and perception.

The ascending modulatory systems of the brain stem are powerful regulators of global brain state. Disturbances of these systems are implicated in several major neuropsychiatric disorders. Yet, how these systems interact with specific neural computations in the cerebral cortex to shape perception, cognition, and behavior remains poorly understood. Here, we probed into the effect of two such systems, the catecholaminergic (dopaminergic and noradrenergic) and cholinergic systems, on an important aspect of cortical computation: its intrinsic variability. To this end, we combined placebo-controlled

A desk top computer program for visualized statistical analysis of lesional images in intracerebral hemorrhage.

Statistically identified information on the relationships between the sites of lesions in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), risk factors such as a smoking or drinking habit, anamnesis, and biochemical data through blood tests will extend assistance to neuromedical clinicians on their daily clinical duties. It will provide them with a useful guide to determine the method of treatment. Also, it will be a basic research material for their clinical studies on diagnosis, progress, or prognosis in ICH. In order to obtain such statistics with the help of the computer, we need to have a computationally

MANAGER: a multi-user computer scheme for management of laboratory staff working hours.

To administer a flexible-working-time system in a busy medical microbiology department, without increased administrative workload, a set of programs was produced for computer monitoring of staff time-keeping records. The programs--initially written to facilitate management and minimise clerical work, and extended to encompass all staff absences--are collectively called MANAGER. They allow efficient management of working hours and staff absences, using a multi-user laboratory computer. The programs were all written in MUMPS and evolved in-house, but could be developed for any multi-user laborat

Computer aided design of prosthetic sockets for below-knee amputees.

A computer-aided sculpting system for use in prosthetics is described. The prosthetist's sculpting tools now consist of a computer, a graphics terminal, a mouse and an on-screen moveable cursor. Accompanied by the system software, these tools allow systematic modification of a primitive socket using techniques analogous to those used by a prosthetist working with rasps and plaster.

Limited rotational and rovibrational line lists computed with highly accurate quartic force fields and ab initio dipole surfaces.

In this work, computational procedures are employed to compute the rotational and rovibrational spectra and line lists for H2O, CO2, and SO2. Building on the established use of quartic force fields, MP2 and CCSD(T) Dipole Moment Surfaces (DMSs) are computed for each system of study in order to produce line intensities as well as the transition energies. The computed results exhibit a clear correlation to reference data available in the HITRAN database. Additionally, even though CCSD(T) DMSs produce more accurate intensities as compared to experiment, the use of MP2 DMSs results in reliable lin

GTGO-driven joint task offloading and resource allocation with explainable AI in vehicular edge computing.

Due to the fast development of intelligent transportation systems and connected vehicles, efficient computation offloading and resource management in vehicular edge computing (VEC) environments have become crucial issues. Low latency, optimality in resource usage, and clarity in decision-making is an open research issue. This paper presents a framework based on GTGO to jointly offload, schedule and allocate resources to different tasks and augment it with an integrated explainable AI (XAI) module. The proposed method enhances system welfare by approximately 15-25 percent and decreases the aver
