Retrospective evaluation of the incidence of presumed feline urethral obstruction during a prepandemic year compared to a pandemic year.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the incidence of urethral obstruction (UO) in male cats. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: One veterinary university teaching hospital and 6 private practice veterinary specialty and emergency centers. ANIMALS: A total of 24,937 total feline cases presenting to the emergency room (ER) between March 2019 and March 2021. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Out of 24,937 total cases, 1793 male cats met the inclusion criteria for diagnosis of UO. Of those, 327 cases were identified in which an additio

Neonatal cystitis leads to alterations in spinal corticotropin releasing factor receptor-type 2 content and function in adult rats following bladder re-inflammation.

Spinal mechanisms associated with visceral hypersensitivity are poorly understood. One model of bladder hypersensitivity with phenotypic features similar to the disorder interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is the neonatal bladder inflammation (NBI) model. In this model, rat pup bladders are infused with zymosan solutions on post-partum days 14-16 and then rats are retested as adults. Studies of other sites of deep tissue hypersensitivity have suggested a role for corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) receptors type 1 and 2 (CRFR1 and CRFR2). Using neurochemical measures, pharmacological

P2 purinergic receptor dysregulation in urologic disease.

P2 purinergic receptors are involved in the normal function of the kidney, bladder, and prostate via signaling that occurs in response to extracellular nucleotides. Dysregulation of these receptors is common in pathological states and often associated with disease initiation, progression, or aggressiveness. Indeed, P2 purinergic receptor expression is altered across multiple urologic disorders including chronic kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease, interstitial cystitis, urinary incontinence, overactive bladder syndrome, prostatitis, and benign prostatic hyperplasia. P2 purinergic recepto

Synergy of Hydeal-D® and Hyaluronic Acid for Protecting and Restoring Urothelium: In Vitro Characterization.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) or painful bladder syndrome is a chronic dysfunction due to an inflammatory condition, characterized by bladder pain and urinary frequency. Currently, no gold standard therapy is available since IC does not respond to conventional ones. Given these premises, the aim of this work was the in vitro characterization of biological properties (mucoadhesion and anti-inflammatory activity) of a commercial product (HydealCyst-HydC) based on hyaluronic acid (HA) and the benzyl ester of HA (Hydeal-D®) intended for bladder instillation to restore and/or protect the urothelial la

Urobiome: An outlook on the metagenome of urological diseases.

The urinary tract likely plays a role in the development of various urinary diseases due to the recently recognized notion that urine is not sterile. In this mini review, we summarize the current literature regarding the urinary microbiome and mycobiome and its relationship to various urinary diseases. It has been recently discovered that the healthy urinary tract contains a host of microorganisms, creating a urinary microbiome. The relative abundance and type of bacteria varies, but generally, deviations in the standard microbiome are observed in individuals with urologic diseases, such as bl

Fibromyalgia syndrome: a discussion of the syndrome and pharmacotherapy.

Fibromyalgia is a complex condition that is characterized by chronic widespread pain and multiple other symptoms, including fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, stiffness, and depressive episodes. Fibromyalgia may coexist and/or overlap with other conditions that may involve central sensitivity, including chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitis, and temporomandibular disorder. The pathophysiology of fibromyalgia remains uncertain but is believed to be partly the result of central systems affecting afferent processin

Sacral neuromodulations for female lower urinary tract, pelvic floor, and bowel disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In recent years, sacral neuromodulation (SNM) has been investigated for the treatment of various types of lower urinary tract and bowel dysfunctions. This review discusses recently published data related to the therapeutic applications of SNM in female lower urinary tract, pelvic floor, and bowel disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: SNM has been employed initially in the treatment of refractory idiopathic overactive bladder, urge urinary incontinence, and chronic nonobstructive urinary retention. Since then, several studies, including randomized and controlled trials, have confirmed

[New knowledge about Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease can yield therapeutic possibilities].

BACKGROUND: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare neurological disease which is always terminal, often within months. The disease attracted attention in the 1990 s, when reports appeared about people acquiring the disease by eating meat from cattle infected with BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy). Recent progress within research on CJD has raised hopes about finding a treatment. The most promising results of this research are presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The review is based on articles (and references in them) identified through non-systematic searches in PubMed. RESULTS: CJD is

Central sensitivity syndromes: mounting pathophysiologic evidence to link fibromyalgia with other common chronic pain disorders.

The aim of this study was to review emerging data from the fields of nursing, rheumatology, dentistry, gastroenterology, gynecology, neurology, and orthopedics that support or dispute pathophysiologic similarities in pain syndromes studied by each specialty. A literature search was performed through PubMed and Ovid using the terms fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint disorder, irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bladder/interstitial cystitis, headache, chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, functional syndromes, and somatization. Each term was linked with pathophysiology and/or central sen

Urine eosinophil cationic protein in painful bladder disease.

Urine eosinophil cationic protein (U-ECP), blood eosinophils and eosinophils in bladder biopsy specimens were studied in 30 patients with painful bladder disease (15 with detrusor mastocytosis, i.e. interstitial cystitis (IC) (greater than or equal to 28 mast cells/mm2 in the detrusor muscle) and 15 patients without detrusor mastocytosis). In patients with IC the median concentration of U-ECP was 140 arbitrary u/l versus 14 arb. u/l in the remaining patients (P less than 0.001). The mean peripheral leukocyte count was significantly lower in the IC group (P less than 0.05). Tissue infiltration

The Effect of Montelukast on Urinary Symptoms in Children With Bladder Pain Syndrome: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Montelukast by inhibiting leukotriene receptors in the bladder can prevent the activation of mast cells. We investigated the effectiveness of Montelukast in reducing the symptoms of children with bladder pain syndrome (BPS). In this randomized clinical trial, children were allocated into groups of intervention (Montelukast and oxybutynin) and the control (oxybutynin). At the beginning and after 14 days, questions from mothers of children about their urinary condition were asked about the frequency of nocturnal enuresis, frequent urination, urinary incontinence, urinary urgency, and their pain

Novel Applications of Non-Invasive Intravesical Botulinum Toxin a Delivery in the Treatment of Functional Bladder Disorders.

Although intravesical botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection for functional bladder disorders is effective, the injection-related problems-such as bladder pain and urinary tract infection-make the procedure invasive and inconvenient. Several vehicles have recently been developed to deliver BoNT-A without injection, thereby making the treatment less or non-invasive. Laboratory evidence revealed that liposome can carry BoNT-A across the uroepithelium and act on sub-urothelial nerve endings. A randomized placebo controlled study revealed that intravesical administration of liposome-encapsulate

Hydrodistension plus Onabotulinumtoxin A in bladder pain syndrome refractory to conservative treatments.

INTRODUCTION: For bladder pain syndrome (BPS) refractory to conservative treatment, the European guidelines consider bladder hydrodistention (HD) under anaesthesia and the injection of Onabotulinumtoxin A (OnabotA) jointly. The objective of this study was to assess our experience in implementing this technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study of 25 patients with BPS who underwent HD plus a submucosal injection of 100 U of OnabotA in trigone. The Hunner lesions were treated endoscopically using resection or electrocoagulation. Thirty-eight procedures were performed (25 first interven

Influence of smoking, coffee, and tea consumption on bladder pain syndrome in female twins.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the influence of smoking, coffee and tea consumption on the risk for bladder pain syndrome (BPS) using the O'Leary Interstitial Cystitis Symptom Index (ICSI). METHODS: In 2005, all twins born between 1959 and 1985 in Sweden (n = 42,852) were invited to participate in a web-based survey to screen for complex diseases, including BPS. Analyses were limited to female twins with information regarding bladder pain symptoms (n = 9349). Women with an ICSI score ≥6 with required nocturia and bladder pain were defined as having BPS symptoms. Logistic regression was used to estimat

A murine model of inflammatory bladder disease: cathelicidin peptide induced bladder inflammation and treatment with sulfated polysaccharides.

PURPOSE: Studies show that LL-37 is a naturally occurring urinary defensin peptide that is up-regulated during urinary tract infections. Although normal urinary LL-37 levels are antimicrobial, we propose that increased LL-37 may trigger bladder inflammation. We further suggest that anti-inflammatory sulfated polysaccharides known as semi-synthetic glycosaminoglycan ether compounds can treat/prevent LL-37 mediated bladder inflammation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were catheterized/instilled with LL-37 (320 μM, 150 μl) for 45 minutes. Animals were sacrificed at 12 and 24 hours, and tiss

Evidence of bladder oversensitivity in the absence of an infection in premenopausal women with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections.

UNLABELLED: Study Type - Prevalence (case control) Level of Evidence 4. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Urinary tract infections (UTIs) have been implicated in the aetiology of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS). Prior studies have described symptoms and laboratory tests suggestive of UTI at the onset of IC/PBS as well as a significant history of childhood recurrent UTIs. However, the mechanism by which recurrent UTIs contribute to the development of IC/PBS is not clear. Our study shows that women with recurrent UTI suffer from bladder oversensiti
