DATA SOURCES: For nonfatal estimates, data were found by literature search using PubMed and Google Scholar in English and Spanish for years 1980 through 2013 and by accessing administrative data on hospital inpatient and outpatient episodes. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic or chronically relapsing skin disease that usually presents for the first time before the age of 20 years. The disease displays great clinical heterogeneity and may resemble a number of different disorders, making the correct diagnosis of AD a significant challenge for physicians. Based on the Hanifin and Rajka criteria, the authors outline the common symptoms of AD and provide an overview of the differential diagnoses to help distinguish AD from other conditions within the clinic.

In a randomised, double-blind clinical trial, the relative efficacy of Locoid scalp lotion and Betnovate scalp application was assessed in the treatment of 30 patients, 15 in each treatment group, suffering from seborrhoeic or atopic dermatitis of the scalp. We describe six patients who developed orange to red-brown scalp discoloration after application of selenium sulfide-containing shampoos. This phenomenon has been described only once previously. In all of the cases, the discoloration resolved shortly after discontinuing the selenium sulfide. Lightly swabbing with isopropyl alcohol facilitated removal of the discoloration. This simple technique serves as a painless diagnostic method, which may prevent unnecessary evaluation with a biopsy.

Recent evidence suggests that the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) is present in skin. The real value of the determination of ACE activity as a clinical-biochemistry test for the diagnosis of psoriasis has not been attained. Extremely low frequencies, from 1 to 1.1 Hz, imprinted in water (imprinting was done by succussing a glass containing the water) led to a total abrogation of a facial seborrhoeic dermatitis, previously proposed as a visible model for the theory of 'memory of water'.
