BACKGROUND: Behçet disease (BD) is a chronic and multisystemic vasculitis characterized with recurrent oral and genital ulcers, uveitis, art … utes.
CONCLUSION: Most publications were reported from developed countries although undeveloped or developing countries had higher prevalence of BD. Physicians in undeveloped and developing countries should be supported and encouraged to perform novel studies on BD.

BACKGROUND: With apparent declines in malaria worldwide during the last decade and more widespread use of malaria rapid diagnostic tests, healthcare workers in low-resource areas face a growing proportion of febrile patients without malaria. We sought to describe current knowledge and identify information gaps of the etiology severe febrile illness in low-and middle-income countries.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a systematic review of studies conducted in low-and-middle income countries 1980-2013 that prospectively assessed consecutive febrile patients admitted to hospital using rigorou

CONTEXT: While several articles describe clinical management of foreign bodies injuries in the upper air tract, little epidemiological evidence is available from injury databases.
OBJECTIVE: This article aims to understand the burden of airway FB injuries in high-, low-, and middle-income countries as emerging from scientific literature.
DATA SOURCES: One thousand six hundred ninety-nine published articles 1978-2008.
STUDY SELECTION: A free text search on PubMed database ((foreign bodies) or (foreign body)) and ((aspiration) or (airways) or (tracheobronchial) or (nasal) or (inhalation) or (

Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are among the leading reasons why patients consult a family or primary health practitioner, take time off work and become disabled. Many of the MSK disorders are more common in the elderly. Thus, as the proportion of the elderly increases all over the world, MSK disorders will make a greater contribution to the global burden of disease. Epidemiological studies have shown that the spectrum of MSK disorders in developing countries is similar to that seen in industrialised countries, but the burden of disease tends to be higher due to a delay in diagnosis or lack o…

UNLABELLED: Puerperal pyrexia and sepsis are among the leading causes of preventable maternal morbidity and mortality not only in developing countries but in developed countries as well. Most postpartum infections take place after hospital discharge, which is usually 24 hours after delivery. In the absence of postnatal follow-up, as is the case in many developing countries, many cases of puerperal infections can go undiagnosed and unreported. Besides endometritis (endomyometritis or endomyoparametritis), wound infection, mastitis, urinary tract infection, and septic thrombophlebitis are the ch…

Since 1989, strains of Salmonella typhi resistant to chloramphenicol, ampicillin, and trimethoprim (i.e., multidrug-resistant [MDR] strains) have been responsible for numerous outbreaks in countries in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Africa. MDR strains have also been isolated with increasing frequency from immigrant workers in countries in the Arabian Gulf, as well as in developed countries from returning travelers. In all MDR strains so far examined, multiple resistance has been encoded by plasmids of the H1 incompatibility group. As a result of the widespread dissemination of s

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in health systems globally and has the potential to improve efficiency, diagnostic accuracy, and decision support. However, its benefits remain unevenly distributed, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Models developed using datasets from specific populations may perform poorly in other settings, reinforcing structural inequities rather than correcting them.
OBJECTIVE: This viewpoint proposes a composite framework, the AI in Healthcare Equity Index (AIHEI), to support measurable assessment of equity in hea

Energy supports health and economic prosperity, yet low-income and socially or politically marginalised populations consume the least energy and depend on the most polluting fuels (ie, biomass). Despite decades of efforts to replace biomass, which is more damaging to health and the climate than cleaner alternatives (ie, gas and electricity), hundreds of millions of people remain without the benefits of clean and modern energy. We outline four priority areas for transitions to clean energy in low-income and middle-income countries: (1) rapidly reduce use of polluting fuels; (2) leverage clean e

BACKGROUND: Hysterectomies for benign conditions have declined in recent decades in most high-income countries (HICs); however, it remains a common surgical procedure among women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although an expanding body of evidence has examined the factors associated with hysterectomy in HICs, evidence remains limited in LMICs. Therefore, we systematically reviewed and synthesised the existing evidence on correlates of hysterectomy in LMICs.
METHODS: We comprehensively searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science for eligible s

Effective health worker (HW) performance is essential for high-quality healthcare. Yet, many low- and middle-income countries rely on HW performance improvement (HWPI) interventions that often yield modest results, such as stand-alone in-service HW training. This viewpoint identifies more effective HWPI interventions, such as group problem-solving. To encourage use of these approaches, we propose definitions of more effective HWPI interventions and what constitutes a high-quality HWPI investment (i.e. support for a particular intervention in a given context). We examine intervention effectiven

Background: Scurvy, a condition caused by vitamin C deficiency, has traditionally been considered eradicated in high-income countries (HICs; World Bank classification). However, emerging evidence suggests its re-emergence within identifiable vulnerability clusters, challenging the conventional assumptions about nutritional adequacy in affluent settings. This study aimed to systematically characterize the contemporary clinical and epidemiological profile of scurvy in HICs and quantify its multisystem burden. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Preferred R

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite growing global interest in neurosurgical equity, research output remains concentrated in high-income countries (HICs), with limited representation from lower-middle-income countries (LMICs). Although the global neurosurgery movement has highlighted these disparities, its impact on authorship and research equity is unclear. This study uses bibliometric analysis to evaluate 20-year trends in neurosurgical publications, focusing on authorship patterns across World Bank income groups.
METHODS: A bibliometric analysis of publications with topic of "neurosurgery"

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal sepsis causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide but is difficult to diagnose clinically. Clinical prediction models (CPMs) could improve diagnostic accuracy, facilitating earlier treatment for cases and avoiding antibiotic overuse. Neonates in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) are disproportionately affected by sepsis, yet no review has comprehensively synthesised evidence for CPMs validated in this setting.
METHODS: We performed a scoping review of CPMs to diagnose neonatal sepsis using Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Global

INTRODUCTION: The REPRIEVE study demonstrated significant reductions in major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) with pitavastatin among people living with HIV (PWH) with low to moderate cardiovascular risk. Most MACE events occurred in higher-income countries, raising important considerations for similar primary prevention interventions within HIV programmes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) as antiretrovirals become safer and as PWH age.
DISCUSSION: Limited data from Africa and within REPRIEVE suggests that MACE may not be as prevalent among PWH as within other geographies. Cons

BACKGROUND: Adolescents comprise one-sixth of the world's population, yet there is no clear understanding of the features that promote adolescent-friendly services (AFS). The lack of clarity and consistency around a definition presents a gap in health services.
METHODS: The review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed empirical studies to explore AFS in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) published between January 2000 and December 2022.
