Self-referential and anxiety-relevant information processing in subclinical social anxiety: an fMRI study.

The fear of negative evaluation is one of the hallmark features of social anxiety. Behavioral evidence thus far largely supports cognitive models which postulate that information processing biases in the face of socially relevant information are a key factor underlying this widespread phobia. So far only one neuroimaging study has explicitly focused on the fear of negative evaluation in social anxiety where the brain responses of social phobics were compared to healthy participants during the processing of self-referential relative to other-referential criticism, praise or neutral information.

Gray matter alterations in visual cortex of patients with loss of central vision due to hereditary retinal dystrophies.

In patients with central visual field scotomata a large part of visual cortex is not adequately stimulated. Over time this lack of input could lead to a reduction of gray matter in the affected cortical areas. We used Voxel Based Morphometry to investigate structural brain changes in patients with central scotomata due to hereditary retinal dystrophies and compared their results to those of normal sighted subjects. Additionally we correlated clinical and demographic characteristics like duration of disease, scotoma size, visual acuity, fixation stability and reading speed to the amount of gray

Some neurophysiological constraints on models of word naming.

The pronunciation of irregular words in deep orthographies like English cannot be specified by simple rules. On the other hand, the fact that novel letter strings can be pronounced seems to imply the existence of such rules. These facts motivate dual-route models of word naming, which postulate separate lexical (whole-word) and non-lexical (rule-based) mechanisms for accessing phonology. We used fMRI during oral naming of irregular words, regular words, and nonwords, to test this theory against a competing single-mechanism account known as the triangle model, which proposes that all words are

[Cortical response to age-related macular degeneration (Part II). Functional MRI study].

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE AND MATERIALS: To evaluate the cortical response to visual stimulation in patients with age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), we conducted a functional MRI study in ten patients presenting unilateral or bilateral ARMD and five age-matched controls, using white flashes during activation phases (see Part I). RESULTS: After anatomical conformation, eight patients and four controls showed significant cortical hemodynamic response to monocular stimulations. Individual analysis was preferred to group evaluation, because of the differences in visual loss in a small number of p

Visual field defects associated with vigabatrin therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of visual field defects in patients taking the anticonvulsant drug vigabatrin and to characterise the features of visual dysfunction found. METHODS: Thirty three unselected patients attending neurology and epilepsy clinics were identified as taking vigabatrin and asked to attend for neuro-ophthalmic evaluation. A control group of 16 patients with epilepsy unexposed to vigabatrin was also evaluated. Visual fields were examined by static perimetry using a Humphrey field analyser. Patients underwent detailed ophthalmic examination, various blood tests, and b

A Smartphone-based gaming system for vestibular rehabilitation: A usability study.

BACKGROUNDVestibular dysfunctions result in a wide range of impairments and can have debilitating consequences on a person's day-to-day activities. Conventional vestibular rehabilitation is effective but suffers from poor therapy compliance due to boredom. Virtual reality technology can make training more engaging and allow precise quantification of the training process. However, most existing technologies for vestibular rehabilitation are expensive and not suitable for use in patients' homes and most clinics. In this pilot study, we developed and evaluated the usability of a smartphone-based

Motion-sensitive responses in visual area V4 in the absence of primary visual cortex.

Neurons in cortical ventral-stream area V4 are thought to contribute to important aspects of visual processing by integrating information from primary visual cortex (V1). However, how V4 neurons respond to visual stimulation after V1 injury remains unclear: While electrophysiological investigation of V4 neurons during reversible V1 inactivation suggests that virtually all responses are eliminated (Girard et al., 1991), fMRI in humans and monkeys with permanent lesions shows reliable V1-independent activity (Baseler et al., 1999; Goebel et al., 2001; Schmid et al., 2010). To resolve this appare

Transcranial magnetic stimulation over posterior parietal cortex disrupts transsaccadic memory of multiple objects.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) plays a role in spatial updating of goals for eye and arm movements across saccades, but less is known about its role in updating perceptual memory. We reported previously that transsaccadic memory has a capacity for storing the orientations of three to four Gabor patches either within a single fixation (fixation task) or between separate fixations (saccade task). Here, we tested the role of the PPC in transsaccadic memory in eight subjects by simultaneously applying single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the right and left PPC, over sever

Shifting visual attention in space: an electrophysiological analysis using high spatial resolution mapping.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence from cortical electrophysiology and functional imaging converges on the view that visual spatial selective attention results in a facilitation of early sensory processing in visual cortical structures. Little is known, however, about the neural control processes that lead to this facilitation. The present study was aimed at further investigating these control processes and their neural correlates by analyzing high spatial resolution maps of brain activity that were evoked by attention-directing cues, but occurred prior to presentation of the target stimulus. METHODS: Subj

Central and peripheral choroidal thickness and eye length changes during accommodation.

PURPOSE: Eye length increases during accommodation, both on-axis and in the periphery. The aim of this study was to determine whether the peripheral choroid thins with accommodation and to determine the relationship with eye length changes measured at the same location. METHODS: Subjects included 53 young adults in good ocular and general health, with 19 emmetropes and 34 myopes. Measurements from the right eye were made for 0 D and 6 D accommodation stimuli for ±30° horizontal visual field/retinal locations in 10° steps. Valid eye length and choroidal thickness measurements were obtained for

Asymptomatic Fellow Eye Involvement in Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Sequential nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) has been reported to occur in approximately 15% of patients within 5 years of the first episode. However, the incidence of presumed previous asymptomatic episode of NAION in fellow eye of patients presenting with acute NAION has not been previously reported. We reviewed charts of patients with acute NAION seen over a 5-year period to determine the frequency of visual field (VF) defect in the fellow eye secondary to presumed previous asymptomatic episode of NAION. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of all patients

Spherical lenses and prisms lead to postural instability in both dyslexic and non dyslexic adolescents.

There is controversy as to whether dyslexic children present systematic postural deficiency. Clinicians use a combination of ophthalmic prisms and proprioceptive soles to improve postural performances. This study examines the effects of convergent prisms and spherical lenses on posture. Fourteen dyslexics (13-17 years-old) and 11 non dyslexics (13-16 years-old) participated in the study. Quiet stance posturography was performed with the TechnoConcept device while subjects fixated a target at eye-level from a distance of 1_m. Four conditions were run: normal viewing; viewing the target with sph
