Isolated Osteoma of the Ascending Process of the Maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Osteoma, the most common benign tumor of the paranasal sinuses, most commonly originates within the frontal sinus, followed by the ethmoid, the maxillary sinus, and finally sphenoid. Only 2 cases of osteomas of the nasal bones were previously reported. This study describes the first reported osteoma of the ascending process of maxilla and describes its management. METHODOLOGY: A 20-year-old man was presented with left painless hard nasal swelling. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed well-circumscribed hyperdense bony mass originating from the outer surface of the left ascending p

Operative management of skull base malignant tumors arising from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus: recent strategies used in 25 cases.

Cancers of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity are the most common malignant tumors of the anterior and anterolateral skull base. The treatment of these tumors affecting the skull base is complex due to the significant anatomical features. We examined 25 patients, 17 males and 8 females with mean age 61 +/- 2 years. En bloc resections using anterior skull base resection, orbital resection, middle fossa resection, and combined procedures of these three resections were performed. Using a combination of adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy, we have achieved a 2-year disease-free survival rate o

Gaucher disease type I: analysis of two cases with thalassemic facies and pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas.

Here we report two unusual patients with Gaucher disease type I. Both girls admitted with hepatosplenomegaly, growth retardation, and anemia at four and 2.5 years of age, and Gaucher cells were seen on bone marrow aspirates. Thalassemic face was first noted at 8 and 11 years of age, respectively, with frontal bossing and maxillary hypertrophia. Although they had unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia, high reticulocytes, polychromasia, and normoblasts on peripheral smear, other laboratory tests for hemolytic disease were negative. Radiological examination revealed typical bone involvement of Gaucher

Use of milbemycin oxime in the treatment of dogs with nasal mite (Pneumonyssoides caninum) infection.

Clinical diagnosis of canine nasal mite (Pneumonyssoides caninum) infection is difficult due to the mite's location in the caudal nasal cavity and frontal sinuses. The current study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of milbemycin oxime in treating dogs with nasal mite infection. A prospective open uncontrolled study included 20 dogs with case histories indicating possible nasal mite infection. Inclusion criteria consisted of either nasal mites being demonstrated (group 1, four dogs), or suspicious clinical signs with no other apparent causes, combined with eosinophilia (group 2, 16 dogs).

Trends and perspectives in minimally invasive surgery in otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

The roots of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (ORL-HNS) can be traced to the 1950s. Today, endonasal sinus surgery and endolaryngeal surgery already fulfill the principles of MIS. To widen its spectrum of indications, however, MIS must be able to offer three advantages that conventional macrosurgery and microsurgery already have: free maneuverability for the instrument, sensory feedback, and three-dimensional imaging. Every anatomical region (e.g., paranasal sinuses, upper aerodigestive tract, cerebellopontine angle) requires specific surgical instrument

Lesions causing a mass in the medial canthus of the orbit: CT and MR features.

Few detailed radiologic articles treat the medial canthus as a "compartment" of the orbit. Nasal stuffiness and epiphora (excessive tearing) are frequent clinical manifestations of diseases involving the medial canthus of the orbit. Although some lesions can be adequately evaluated by clinical examination, imaging may show unsuspected deep extensions of the abnormality. CT has traditionally been the imaging method of choice because of the inherent contrast between structures in this region and its superb depiction of bone detail (Fig. 1). MR imaging can be useful in detecting subtle marrow inv

Sinonasal Sarcoidosis Presenting as an Aggressive Nasal Destructive Lesion Mimicking Malignancy: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease that commonly involves the lungs, with rare involvement of the sinonasal region. We present the case of a 64-year-old Asian female with a five-month history of painless nasal swelling and deformity. Imaging revealed an aggressive, fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-avid lesion involving the frontal sinuses, nasal septum, hard palate, and adjacent soft tissues, raising concern for malignancy such as lymphoma or squamous cell carcinoma. However, multiple biopsies from the nasal lesion, mediastinal lymph nodes, and a subcutaneous elbow nodule revealed non-

[A case of sinonasal inverted papilloma with malignant transformation and distant metastasis: a 10-year follow-up report].

Sinonasal inverted papilloma(SNIP) is a kind of benign tumor originating from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, accounting for 70% of papillomas. The incidence of the disease is more common in males, with an average age of 50-60 years. It is most likely to occur in unilateral maxillary sinus and ethmoid sinus, followed by sphenoid sinus and frontal sinus. It has the characteristics of local invasion, high recurrence rate and malignant tendency, and most malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma. Endoscopic nasal resection and appropriate adjuvant therapy can help to reduce the

[A case of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis mimicking transient ischemic attack].

A 48-year-old woman with a right-sided headache beginning a month prior to admission presented with sudden-onset right hemiparesis. On admission, she had weakness of the right lower extremity, which disappeared 3 hours after onset. Contrast enhanced brain MRI revealed no parenchymal lesion, while indicated thrombi in the superior sagittal sinus and the right side of the transverse sinus, sigmoid sinus, and internal jugular vein, leading to the diagnosis of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. Brain perfusion single photon emission computed tomography presented slightly decreased blood flow in the

Dental and craniofacial characteristics caused by the p.Ser40Leu mutation in IFITM5.

Severe forms of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) are usually caused by mutations in genes that code for collagen Type I and frequently are associated with craniofacial abnormalities. However, the dental and craniofacial characteristics of OI caused by the p.Ser40Leu mutation in the IFITM5 gene have not been reported. We investigated a 15-year-old girl with severe OI caused by this mutation. She had marked deformations of extremity long bones. There were no clinical or radiological signs of dentinogenesis imperfecta, but one tooth was missing and several teeth were impacted. Cone beam computed tomo

Pure endoscopic endonasal removal of unusual anterior skull base aneursymal bone cyst extending to the frontal lobe.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign, nonneoplastic, hemorrhagic, and expansile osseous lesions that present most frequently at age younger than 20 years. Aneurysmal bone cysts typically involve long bones of extremities, thorax, pelvis, or spinal column. Skull base involvement is very rare. The authors report the case of a 23-year-old woman with ABC of the skull base and total removal of lesion with pure endoscopic endonasal approach. The patient had presented with nasal obstruction for 6 months. Physical and neurological examination findings were normal except for bilateral anosmia. Crani

Surgical correction of pneumosinus dilatans of maxillary sinus.

Pneumosinus dilatans is a rare disease in which 1 or more paranasal sinuses are dilated without functional alteration. The frontal sinus is the most commonly affected site, with involvement of the maxillary sinus being rare. Asymmetrical facial contour is the most common sign, and nasal obstruction and pain may also be present. We describe 6 cases of maxillary pneumosinus dilatans with histories of protrusion of the malar region. Plane radiography and computed tomography revealed abnormal expansion of the maxillary sinus without thinning of the bony wall, leading to a diagnosis of maxillary pn

Sinus CT scan findings in patients with chronic cough following sulfur mustard inhalation: a case-control study.

Sinusitis is one of the most common causes of chronic cough, which is the most common manifestation among patients exposed to sulfur mustard (SM). We conducted our study on exposed victims to SM with chronic cough for evaluation of probable sinus abnormality. In a case-control study, among referred patients for evaluation of persistent chronic cough, 39 patients with previous and 35 patients without previous history of exposure to SM underwent paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) scans (Somatom CR CT scanner) in coronal planes. A well-designed standard pro forma was used for reporting sinu

[Anatomic variations of the sinuses; multiplanar CT-analysis in 641 patients].

INTRODUCTION: The diagnostic workup proceeding paranasal sinus surgery routinely includes coronal CT views to get an exact representation of the microanatomy in the region of the lateral nasal wall and the anterior skull base. Axial and sagittal views are often not available, yet they can provide important additional information. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: It was the aim of the current study to analyse multislice CT data sets in order to determine the incidence of anatomical variants. The investigation was performed as a retrospective, monocentrical study on n = 641 patients. Prior paranasal s

Bioabsorbable steroid-eluting implants in high-risk primary and revision frontal sinus surgery: real-world outcomes at a UK tertiary centre.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic frontal sinus surgery frequently poses significant technical challenges due to the complex anatomy of the frontal recess, and carries a substantial risk of restenosis and revision surgery. Removable frontal sinus stents have been used to maintain postoperative patency, but their limitations and complications are well recognised. Bioabsorbable steroid-eluting implants have emerged as an alternative designed to support wound healing and reduce postoperative scarring and restenosis. The aim of this study was to describe real-world utilisation patterns and clinical outcome

Sepsis + ptosis = an unusual diagnosis.

The authors present the case of a 19-year old man presenting to the emergency department with a 2-day history of left eye pain and ptosis, facial pain around the maxillae, coryza, headaches and fevers. He had a background of autism, mild learning disability, obsessive-compulsive disorder and asthma. Within the last month, his risperidone and sertraline doses had been increased. Basic observations and investigations suggested sepsis: tachypnoea, sinus tachycardia, fever and a raised white cell count and C reactive protein level. A CT head showed sinonasal polyposis and moderate chronic rhinosin

Comparison of Piezoelectric and High-Speed Drills for Frontal Beak Osteotomy in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery-Exploratory Study.

INTRODUCTION: Frontal beak reduction is a critical and challenging step in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Traditional high-speed drills can risk thermal injury and soft tissue trauma, whereas piezoelectric surgery uses ultrasonic vibrations for selective bone cutting and may improve surgical precision. This study compared piezoelectric devices with conventional drills for frontal beaks reduction. METHODS: A double-blind exploratory study with randomisation was conducted during the years 2019-2022. Adult CRS patients (n = 43) with prominent nasofrontal beak un
