Rural and Urban Differences in Vegetable and Fruit Consumption Among Older Cancer Survivors in the Deep South: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Study.

BackgroundCancer survivors, especially those who are older, experience increased comorbidity and risk for secondary cancers. A varied dietary pattern rich in vegetables and fruits (V&F) is recommended to improve health. However, V&F intake can differ by rural vs urban status.ObjectiveOur objective was to assess the differences in V&F consumption among older cancer survivors residing in urban- and rural-designated areas, and to explore whether differences exist according to sex, race, and cancer type.DesignThis was a cross-sectional secondary analysis.Participants/settingScreening data from the

Exploring the role of health-related quality of life measures in predictive modelling for oncology: a systematic review.

Health related quality of life (HRQoL) is increasingly assessed in oncology research and routine care, which has led to the inclusion of HRQoL in prediction models. This review aims to describe the current state of oncological prediction models incorporating HRQoL. A systematic literature search for the inclusion of HRQoL in prediction models in oncology was conducted. Selection criteria were a longitudinal study design and inclusion of HRQoL data in prediction models as predictor, outcome, or both. Risk of bias was assessed using the PROBAST tool and quality of reporting was scored with an ad

The Landscape of COVID-19 in Cancer Patients: Prevalence, Impacts, and Recommendations.

Cancer patients are susceptible groups to COVID-19, and risk-adjusted models show that most cancer patients have a 25-39% mortality risk if infected with COVID-19. The infection rate of SARS-CoV-2 in cancer patients in China was 0.79% (12 of 1524 patients; 95% CI, 0.31.2%). The case fatality rate of COVID-19 in the overall population ranges from 2.3 to 8.0%; among these, the case fatality rate for cancer patients is at 5.6%. In a retrospective cohort study of 28 COVID-19-infected cancer patients, a total of 15 (53.6%) patients had severe outcomes with a mortality rate of 28.6%. In a pooled ana

A life span perspective on competencies for a healthy, physically active lifestyle: Findings of a data pooling initiative with over 7000 individuals.

Individuals are recommended to lead active lifestyles throughout the life course. The model of physical activity-related health competence (PAHCO) adopts a competence approach by integrating physical, cognitive, and motivational determinants for health-enhancing PA (movement competence, control competence, self-regulation competence). Drawing on a comprehensive dataset pooling, the goal of the present study was to model the idiosyncratic courses of 10 PAHCO indicators over the life span. We identified studies that empirically operationalized PAHCO, combining data of 7134 individuals (age range

Antiobesity Medications for Older Adults-the New, the Good, the Bad, and the Unknown.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity affects 42% of older adults, with rates continuing to rise. This a complex condition influenced by non-modifiable as well as modifiable risk factors. The disease can be treated through modifications to diet, physical activity, and behavior and more recently through antiobesity medications (AOMs) and surgery. Treatment must be tailored to individual needs due to age-related metabolic and physiological changes. This review aimed to identify the suitability of seven FDA-approved AOMs in the treatment of obesity in older adults. METHODS: A review of AOMs was performed, focusing

Toward a more patient-centered drug development process in clinical trials for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes/neoplasms (MDS): Practical considerations from the International Consortium for MDS (icMDS).

Notable treatment advances have been made in recent years for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes/neoplasms (MDS), and several new drugs are under development. For example, the emerging availability of oral MDS therapies holds the promise of improving patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Within this rapidly evolving landscape, the inclusion of HRQoL and other patient-reported outcomes (PROs) is critical to inform the benefit/risk assessment of new therapies or to assess whether patients live longer and better, for what will likely remain a largely incurable disease. We provide

Osteoporosis in Frail Patients: A Consensus Paper of the Belgian Bone Club.

In this consensus paper, the Belgian Bone Club aims to provide a state of the art on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of osteoporosis in frail individuals, including patients with anorexia nervosa, patients on dialysis, cancer patients, persons with sarcopenia, and the oldest old. All these conditions may indeed induce bone loss that is superimposed on physiological bone loss and often remains under-recognized and under-treated. This is of particular concern because of the major burden of osteoporotic fractures in terms of morbidity, mortality, and economic cost. Therefore, there is

The Effects of Light Therapy on Cognitive Function and Stress in Women With Breast Cancer Before Systemic Treatment.

BackgroundCancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), for example, impairments in reaction time, processing speed, memory and executive function, may be associated with breast cancer (BC) surgery which can disrupt biological and psychological stress markers. Evidence suggests that light therapy may ameliorate cognitive impairment and stress. In this double-blind, randomized controlled trial, we investigated the efficacy of light therapy on mitigating the impact of BC surgery on CRCI in a national Icelandic cohort of women with BC.MethodsParticipants were randomly allocated to receive circadian

Change in Neurocognitive Function in Patients Who Receive CAR-T Cell Therapies: A Steep Hill to Climb.

Immunotherapy with chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapies has brought substantial improvement in clinical outcomes in patients with relapsed/refractory B cell neoplasms. However, complications such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) limit the therapeutic efficacy of this treatment approach. ICANS can have a broad range of clinical manifestations, while various scoring systems have been developed for its grading. Cognitive decline is prevalent in CAR-T therapy recipients including impaired attention, difficulty in it

Associations Between Self-Rated Health and Mortality in the Norwegian Women and Cancer (NOWAC) Study.

PurposeWe investigated the association between self-rated health (SRH) and cancer incidence and SRH and all-cause mortality among Norwegian women.Population and methodsWe used data from 110,104 women in the Norwegian Women and Cancer (NOWAC) cohort aged 41-70 years at baseline. We used flexible parametric survival analysis with restricted cubic splines to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between SRH and mortality in the entire cohort. We employed the same method in a multistate design to assess associations between baseline SRH and 1) cancer

Wearable sensor-based performance status assessment in cancer: A pilot multicenter study from the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology (A19_Pilot2).

Clinical performance status is designed to be a measure of overall health, reflecting a patient's physiological reserve and ability to tolerate various forms of therapy. Currently, it is measured by a combination of subjective clinician assessment and patient-reported exercise tolerance in the context of daily living activities. In this study, we assess the feasibility of combining objective data sources and patient-generated health data (PGHD) to improve the accuracy of performance status assessment during routine cancer care. Patients undergoing routine chemotherapy for solid tumors, routine

First-line treatment with bortezomib rapidly stimulates both osteoblast activity and bone matrix deposition in patients with multiple myeloma, and stimulates osteoblast proliferation and differentiation in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of bortezomib on osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, as well as on bone matrix deposition for the first time in bisphosphonate-naïve, previously untreated patients with myeloma. METHODS: Twenty newly diagnosed patients received four cycles of bortezomib treatment, initially as monotherapy and then combined with a glucocorticoid from cycle two to four. Bone remodeling markers were monitored closely during treatment. Furthermore, the effects of bortezomib and a glucocorticoid on immature and mature osteoblasts were also st
