Use of temporal morphomic indices as a clinically important variable in the diagnosis of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: Preoperative computed tomography (CT) evaluation of patients with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis (NSC) has focused on the bony cranial vault while ignoring the surrounding soft tissues. In this study, we posit that novel CT-derived temporal muscle and temporal fat pad morphomics (tissue thickness, area, and volume) can be used to calculate temporal morphomic indices (TMIs), which are unique to each NSC subtype (metopic, coronal, and sagittal) and divergent from normal individuals. METHODS: High-throughput image analysis was used to reconstruct the 3-dimensional anatomy and quanti

Stochastic tracking of infection in a CF lung.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan are the two ubiquitous imaging sources that physicians use to diagnose patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) or any other Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Unfortunately the cost constraints limit the frequent usage of these medical imaging procedures. In addition, even though both CT scan and MRI provide mesoscopic details of a lung, in order to obtain microscopic information a very high resolution is required. Neither MRI nor CT scans provide micro level information about the location of infection in a binary tree st

Evaluation of precision and accuracy assessment of different 3-D surface imaging systems for biomedical purposes.

Three-dimensional (3-D) surface imaging has gained clinical acceptance, especially in the field of cranio-maxillo-facial and plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery. Six scanners based on different scanning principles (Minolta Vivid 910®, Polhemus FastSCAN™, GFM PRIMOS®, GFM TopoCAM®, Steinbichler Comet® Vario Zoom 250, 3dMD DSP 400®) were used to measure five sheep skulls of different sizes. In three areas with varying anatomical complexity (areas, 1 = high; 2 = moderate; 3 = low), 56 distances between 20 landmarks are defined on each skull. Manual measurement (MM), coordinate machine

Examination of forensic entomology evidence using computed tomography scanning: case studies and refinement of techniques for estimating maggot mass volumes in bodies.

A new technique has recently been developed for estimating the volume of maggot masses on deceased persons using post-mortem CT scans. This allows volume to be measured non-invasively and factored into maggot mass temperature calculations for both casework and research. Examination of admission scans also allows exploration of entomological evidence in anatomical areas not usually exposed by autopsy (e.g. nasal cavities and facial sinuses), and before autopsy disrupts the maggot distribution on a body. This paper expands on work already completed by providing the x-ray attenuation coefficient

Localization of the lumbar discs using machine learning and exact probabilistic inference.

We propose a novel fully automatic approach to localize the lumbar intervertebral discs in MR images with PHOG based SVM and a probabilistic graphical model. At the local level, our method assigns a score to each pixel in target image that indicates whether it is a disc center or not. At the global level, we define a chain-like graphical model that represents the lumbar intervertebral discs and we use an exact inference algorithm to localize the discs. Our main contributions are the employment of the SVM with the PHOG based descriptor which is robust against variations of the discs and a graph

Is metal artefact reduction mandatory in cardiac PET/CT imaging in the presence of pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator leads?

PURPOSE: Cardiac PET/CT imaging is often performed in patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) leads. However, metallic implants usually produce artefacts on CT images which might propagate to CT-based attenuation-corrected (CTAC) PET images. The impact of metal artefact reduction (MAR) for CTAC of cardiac PET/CT images in the presence of pacemaker, ICD and ECG leads was investigated using both qualitative and quantitative analysis in phantom and clinical studies. METHODS: The study included 14 patients with various leads undergoing perfusion and viability exa

Comparison between three-dimensional and triplanar computed tomography imaging of the frontal recess.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in endoscopic surgical techniques, management of frontal sinus disease remains challenging. Much of this is related to the complex nature of frontal recess anatomy. A thorough understanding of frontal recess anatomy is paramount for the safety and success of frontal sinus surgery. Three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) may allow surgeons to obtain a more complete preoperative assessment of frontal recess anatomy. The purpose of this study was to determine if reconstructed 3D CT images as an adjunct to conventional triplanar imaging provide additional infor

An unusual combination of myocardial bridging and coronary artery aneurysm identified on 64-detector coronary angiography.

Coronary artery aneurysm is an uncommon finding. It is defined as a dilated coronary artery which exceeds the diameter of the normal adjacent vessel by 1.5-2 times. Although theorized mechanisms include atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) and iatrogenic causes such as the use of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), the natural history and prognosis of this disease remain obscure. We describe a case of a 75 year old man who was found to have a long segmental myocardial bridge immediately followed by a 5 mm inner diameter aneurysm in the left anterior descending artery (LAD) dete

Deep learning improves image quality in motion-robust and sedation-free pediatric brain MRI.

OBJECTIVES: Motion and limited compliance compromise diagnostic MR image quality, particularly in pediatric patients who frequently require sedation. Single-shot sequences offer a time-efficient alternative but suffer from reduced image quality. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of a deep learning (DL) framework combining compressed sensing (CS) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to enhance T2-weighted single-shot MRI (T2-SSHDL) compared with conventional CS-based reconstruction (T2-SSHconv) and routinely acquired high-resolution T2-weighted sequences. MRF-based intensity invariant elastic registration of cardiac perfusion images using saliency information.

In this paper, we propose a Markov random field-based method that uses saliency and gradient information for elastic registration of dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance (MR) images of the heart. DCE-MR images are characterized by rapid intensity changes over time, thus posing challenges for conventional intensity-based registration methods. Saliency information contributes to a contrast invariant metric to identify similar regions in spite of contrast enhancement. Its robustness and accuracy are attributed to a close adherence to a neurobiological model of the human visual syste

Personalized pulmonary trunk modeling for intervention planning and valve assessment estimated from CT data.

Pulmonary valve disease affects a significant portion of the global population and often occurs in conjunction with other heart dysfunctions. Emerging interventional methods enable percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation, which constitute an alternative to open heart surgery. As minimal invasive procedures become common practice, imaging and non-invasive assessment techniques turn into key clinical tools. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for intervention planning as well as morphological and functional quantification of the pulmonary trunk and valve. An abstraction of the anatomic

Computer-aided placement of deep brain stimulators: from planning to intraoperative guidance.

In current practice, optimal placement of deep-brain stimulators (DBSs) used to treat movement disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease and essential tremor is an iterative procedure. A target is chosen preoperatively based on anatomical landmarks identified on magnetic resonance images. This point is used as an initial position that is refined intraoperatively using both microelectrode recordings and macrostimulation. In this paper, we report on our current progress toward developing a system for the computer-assisted preoperative selection of target points and for the intraoperative ad

A novel forward projection-based metal artifact reduction method for flat-detector computed tomography.

Metallic implants generate streak-like artifacts in flat-detector computed tomography (FD-CT) reconstructed volumetric images. This study presents a novel method for reducing these disturbing artifacts by inserting discarded information into the original rawdata using a three-step correction procedure and working directly with each detector element. Computation times are minimized by completely implementing the correction process on graphics processing units (GPUs). First, the original volume is corrected using a three-dimensional interpolation scheme in the rawdata domain, followed by a secon

Imaging mass spectrometry analysis for follicular lymphoma grading.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the second most common non-Hodgkins lymphoma in the United States. While the current diagnosis depends heavily on the review of H&E-stained tissues, additional sources of information such as IHC are occasionally needed. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) can be used to generate protein profiles from localized tissue regions, thus making it possible to relate changes in tissue histology to the changes in the protein signature of the tissue. It may be possible to determine potential biomarkers that can indicate disease state and p

Automated detection of moderate and large pneumothorax on frontal chest X-rays using deep convolutional neural networks: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pneumothorax can precipitate a life-threatening emergency due to lung collapse and respiratory or circulatory distress. Pneumothorax is typically detected on chest X-ray; however, treatment is reliant on timely review of radiographs. Since current imaging volumes may result in long worklists of radiographs awaiting review, an automated method of prioritizing X-rays with pneumothorax may reduce time to treatment. Our objective was to create a large human-annotated dataset of chest X-rays containing pneumothorax and to train deep convolutional networks to screen for potentially emerg
