Impact of the late Syrian crisis on infectious diseases in Lebanon: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of the late Syrian refugee crisis on infectious disease prevalence in Lebanon, focusing on living conditions, healthcare strain, and disease transmission. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus from 2013 to 2024 to identify peer-reviewed English-language studies using keywords related to infectious diseases and the Syrian crisis. Inclusion criteria required peer-reviewed English studies on infectious diseases in Lebanon that reported outcomes in the context of the Syrian crisis. The review was con

In vitro and in vivo action of turmeric oil (Curcuma longa L.) against Argulus spp. in goldfish (Carassius auratus).

BACKGROUND: Argulus is a common and widespread ectoparasite that causes major parasitic diseases and is a virus and bacteria carrier in the ornamental fish trade. AIM: The purpose of this study is to determine what types of phytochemicals are present in the essential oil extracted from turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa L.) and to assess the efficacy of turmeric oil in eliminating Argulus spp. infestations in goldfish (Carassius auratus). METHODS: The chemical composition and quantity of the major substances in essential oils from fresh turmeric rhizome were detected by gas chromatography/mass

Is Allopreening a Stimulus-Driven Defense Against Ectoparasites?

Allopreening occurs when 1 bird preens another bird. The behavior is normally directed at the head and neck of the recipient, i.e., regions that the bird cannot self-preen. Studies of penguins, pigeons, and other groups of birds suggest that allopreening plays a role in the control of ectoparasites, such as ticks and feather lice. However, it is not known whether allopreening increases in response to increases in parasite load, or whether it is a programmed response that occurs independently of parasite load. We conducted a laboratory experiment using wild-caught rock pigeons (Columba livia) t

[Trichomycosis (trichobacteriosis) capitis in an infant: Microbiological, dermoscopic and ultrastructural features].

UNLABELLED: Trichomycosis is a superficial infection caused by Corynebacterium flavescens, which regularly affects axillary, and to a a lesser extent, pubic, scrotal and intergluteal, and exceptionally, head hairs or trichomycosis capitis (TC). This condition is characterised by the formation of bacterial nodules. Clinically, it can be confused with white piedra or pediculosis. The diagnosis is made by microscopic and dermoscopic observation and confirmed by culture. OBJECTIVE: To present a case of TC in an infant and illustrate the microscopic, dermoscopic, and ultrastructural characteristic

Clinical efficacy of selamectin in the treatment of naturally acquired infection of sucking lice (Linognathus setosus) in dogs.

A clinical study was performed in 21 dogs to evaluate the efficacy of selamectin for the treatment of naturally acquired infection of sucking lice (Linognathus setosus [L.setosus]) in dogs. Each dog was randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. One group was treated with selamectin applied topically at a mean dosage of 7.9 mg/kg. The other group was treated with permethrin applied topically at a mean dosage of 85.7 mg/kg. At day 42 posttreatment, all animals remaining in the study (10 treated with selamectin and six with permethrin) were clear of lice. In both groups, the reduction in

Pediculicide drug products for over-the-counter human use; amendment of final monograph. Final rule.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a final rule amending the final monograph (FM) for over-the-counter (OTC) pediculicide drug products to revise labeling for the statement of identity, warnings, directions, and other required statements. Pediculicide drug products are used for the treatment of head, pubic (crab), and body lice. FDA is issuing this final rule as part of its ongoing review of OTC drug products after considering public comment on its proposed regulation and all relevant data and information that have come to the agency's attention.

[Prevalence of pediculus humanus capitis infestation in schoolchildren at Despeñaderos, Córdoba Province].

BACKGROUND: Approximately 80% of Argentine children have pediculosis, making it imperious to detect the defects in the prevention and control actions for this parasitosis. OBJECTIVES: To study the infestation level by P. h. capitis, its temporal variation, and the association between infestation and host characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A monthly census in children of 6-8 years old from 2 primary schools (state and private) was carried out, recording the parasite stages found, children characteristics (sex, colour and length of hair), and infestation level. Data were analysed by means

Clinical evidence of lice resistance to over-the-counter products.

BACKGROUND: Over-the-counter insecticidal solutions continue to be the mainstream treatment for most cases of head lice. Recorded insecticidal activity 15 years ago was at 100%, with ovicidal kill at 80%. Recently scattered accounts of possible resistance have surfaced. OBJECTIVE: This article is to document the general consensus that head lice are becoming resistant to standard over-the-counter therapies. METHODS: Direct testing of lethality of adult lice with permethrin and pyrethroid was assessed. RESULTS: Present over-the-counter products proved to be successful in only 9 of 32 head lic

Isolation, amplification, and sequencing of human mitochondrial DNA obtained from human crab louse, Pthirus pubis (L.), blood meals.

The ability to identify individual human hosts based on analyses of blood recovered from the digestive tract of hematophagous arthropods has been a long-term pursuit in both medical and forensic entomology. Blood meal individualization techniques can bring important advancements to studies of vector-borne disease epidemiology. Forensically, these analyses may aid in assailant identification in violent crime cases where blood-feeding insects or their excreta are recovered from victims or at crime scenes. Successful isolation, amplification, and sequencing of human mitochondrial DNA obtained fro

Field evaluation of doramectin for treatment of gastrointestinal nematode infections and louse infestations of cattle.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of doramectin given by injection at a dosage of 200 micrograms/kg of body weight for treatment of gastrointestinal nematodiasis or louse infestations of cattle. ANIMALS: 1,031 mixed-breed cattle were treated in the nematode study and 418 were treated in the louse study. PROCEDURE: Naturally parasitized cattle were given 200 micrograms of doramectin/kg or an equivalent volume of saline solution, SC. In nematode experiments, fecal samples were collected from each animal 1 week before treatment, at time of treatment, and at weekly intervals there a
