A culture system has been established to produce gram amounts of peritrophic membrane from larvae of the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina. Peritrophic membrane obtained from this culture has been used to immunize sheep. The immunization produced an immune response which resulted in the average weight of larvae on immunized sheep being only 50% of that of larvae grown on control sheep (P < 0.05). Length of the oldest maggots recovered from a body often provide an accurate estimate of the time since death. The length of maggots of Protophormia terraenovae (Robineau-Desvoidy) of known age, at peak of feeding, was measured after 5 days immersion in one of 15 killing and preservative solutions, some of which are routinely used at autopsy and in forensic entomology; controls were killed in boiling water. Elephantiasis nostras, the result of chronic lymphedema, is characterized by marked edema of the affected extremity with a thickened, verrucous, pebbly appearance of the skin. The pathogenesis is thought to be related to fibroblast proliferation following impaired lymphatic drainage, leading to fibrosis and further restriction of lymph drainage with progressive edema. A case report of a patient with massive chronic lymphedema of her feet is presented.

The stomachs of 118 donkeys were examined at postmortem during the period from March 1982 to February 1983 for Gasterophilus spp. larvae. G. intestinalis larvae clustered in groups near the boundary of the glandular and non-glandular epithelium of the stomach and infested 98.3% of the donkeys with highest numbers in July and lowest numbers in October. Authors relate the first case of otomyiasis in Ivory Coast due to Chrysomyia bezziana and Sarcophaga sp. They insist on scarcity of such a localisation. Egg-laying and development of larvae in tympanum case was favoured by a preexisting cholesteatoma. Precise entomological diagnosis needs incubation of the larvae in Petri dishes.

The clinical presentation of an 11-year-old boy with unilateral posterior internal ophthalmomyiasis is described. Ophthalmoscopy of the affected eye in this individual disclosed characteristic subretinal depigmented linear tracks and a larva within the vitreous. 10 foals were artificially infected for the first time with eggs of Gastrophilus intestinalis, G. veterinus, G. haemorrhoidalis, G. inermis, G. nigricornis. 63 to 67% of the 1st stage larvae die in the first period of life after emergence from the egg, at the moment of invasion into the skin and at the beginning of the migration. In 40 to 45 years after the infection most larvae (73 to 82%), depending on their specific belonging, were found in the stomach, duodenum and rectum.

Ophthalmomyiasis describes invasion of the eye by parasitic larvae (maggots) of certain flies in the order Diptera. In external ophthalmomyiasis, the larva is external to the globe, whereas internal ophthalmomyiasis designates those cases in which the larva is present within an intact globe. The latter group are further subdivided into anterior involvement (anterior chamber) and posterior involvement (posterior segment). Subretinal tracks are a recognized manifestation of posterior internal ophthalmomyiasis. In every case report that we found the subretinal tracks were described as unilateral.…

Populations of L. cuprina from the Bairnsdale, Glenrowan, Hamilton and Torrita areas of Victoria were found to have similar high diazinon resistance status, following near fixation of a single allele at the R1 locus. Pure-breeding resistant strains were derived from each area and used as base populations for a selection program on adults. Three species of Anastrepha are usually found independently in 9 fruits from different regions of Costa Rica. A striata was found in 5, and A. serpentina and A. obliqua in each of 3 different fruits. During the harvest season, these larvae frequently produce intestinal pseudomyiasis, especially in children.
