Temporal and spatial integration of face, object, and scene features in occipito-temporal cortex.

In three neuroimaging experiments, face, novel object, and building stimuli were compared under conditions of restricted (aperture) viewing and normal (whole) viewing. Aperture viewing restricted the view to a single face/object feature at a time, with the subjects able to move the aperture continuously though time to reveal different features. An analysis of the proportion of time spent viewing different features showed stereotypical exploration patterns for face, object, and building stimuli, and suggested that subjects constrained their viewing to the features most relevant for recognition.

Dopamine boosts memory for angry faces in Parkinson's disease.

The influence of emotional context on cognitive operations is of fundamental importance for the evolution of higher cognitive functions and their disturbance in neuropsychiatric disorders. The dopamine pathways projecting to prefrontal cortex and the basal ganglia are assumed to play a major role in such emotion-cognition interactions. Here we provide evidence for such a role by studying working memory for emotional faces in patients with Parkinson's Disease. We studied 25 patients with Parkinson's disease during their on and off medication states. Faces with emotional expressions (happy, angr

Equivalence class formation in a trace stimulus pairing two-response format: effects of response labels and prior programmed transitivity induction.

Three experiments identified factors that did and did not enhance the formation of two-node four-member equivalence classes when training and testing were conducted with trials presented in a trace stimulus pairing two-response (SP2R) format. All trials contained two separately presented stimuli. Half of the trials, called within-class trials, contained stimuli from the same class while the other half, called cross class trials, contained stimuli from different classes. On within class trials, making a YES response was correct and making a NO response was wrong. On cross class trials, making a

Anomalous lateral dominance patterns in women with eating disorders: clues to neurobiological bases.

OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that there is differential hemispheric functioning in women with eating disorders as compared to controls. METHOD: A divided visual field paradigm, with a language task [for which we assume left hemisphere (LH) specialization] and a spatial task [for which we assume right hemisphere (RH) specialization]. The participants were 20 healthy women, 17 women with anorexia nervosa (AN), and 18 women with bulimia nervosa (BN). RESULTS: The groups did not differ in accuracy. The latency of responses revealed different asymmetry patterns among the groups. The AN gr

Dissociative tendencies and facilitated emotional processing.

Dissociation is a process linked to lapses of attention, history of abuse or trauma, compromised emotional memory, and a disintegrated sense of self. It is theorized that dissociation stems from avoiding emotional information, especially negative emotion, to protect a fragile psyche. The present study tested whether or not dissociaters do actually avoid processing emotion by asking groups scoring high or low on the Dissociative Experiences Scale to judge the affective valence of several types of emotional stimuli. Manipulations of valence, modality (pictures or words), task complexity, and per

Amygdala activation in the processing of neutral faces in social anxiety disorder: is neutral really neutral?

Previous research has suggested that Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is associated with a tendency to interpret ambiguous social stimuli in a threatening manner. The present study used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine patterns of neural activation in response to the processing of neutral facial expressions in individuals diagnosed with SAD and healthy controls (CTLs). The SAD participants exhibited a different pattern of amygdala activation in response to neutral faces than did the CTL participants, suggesting a neural basis for the biased processing of ambiguous so

Evaluating implicit spider fear associations using the Go/No-go Association Task.

The Go/No-go association task (GNAT) [Nosek, B.A., & Banaji, M.R. (2001). The Go/No-go Association Task. Social Cognition, 19, 625-666], which measures automatic associations in memory, was administered to participants who were high (N=17) versus low (N=17) in spider fear along with other established fear measures to validate the tool as a proxy measure for fear schemata. The GNAT involves participants classifying stimuli into superordinate categories and looking at speed of categorization when categories match, versus contradict, participants' hypothesized implicit fear associations. Evaluation of cerebral dyschromatopsia using color afterimage.

Cerebral dyschromatopsia is traditionally evaluated by color discrimination tests such as the Farnsworth-Maunsell 100 Hue Test. These tests are also used to evaluate color-perception deficits caused by eye disease, and they do not tell us whether color perception is impaired in the eye or in the brain. Here, we used color afterimage to isolate color-perception deficits in the brain from those in the eyes, in a patient with cerebral dyschromatopsia. The results showed that the patient perceived color afterimage of yellow and blue with abnormal duration and chromaticity. On the other hand, the p

Facial recognition in primary focal dystonia.

The basal ganglia seem to be involved in emotional processing. Primary dystonia is a movement disorder considered to result from basal ganglia dysfunction, and the aim of the present study was to investigate emotion recognition in patients with primary focal dystonia. Thirty-two patients with primary cranial (n=12) and cervical (n=20) dystonia were compared to 32 healthy controls matched for age, sex, and educational level on the facially expressed emotion labeling (FEEL) test, a computer-based tool measuring a person's ability to recognize facially expressed emotions. Patients with cognitive

The functional neuroanatomy of autism.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental syndrome characterized by impaired social and executive functions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive technique that allows investigation of the neural networks underlying cognitive impairments in autism. In this article, brain imaging studies investigating the functional brain anatomy of autism are reviewed. Face recognition, theory of mind and executive functions have all been explored in functional neuroimaging studies involving autistic patients. The available literature suggests an involvement of abnormal functional mechanisms in

Lateralization of spatial-memory processes: evidence on spatial span, maze learning, and memory for object locations.

Spatial memory is one of the most important cognitive functions in daily life, enabling us to locate objects in our environment or to learn a route or a path. In the present study, we elaborated on the hypothesis that human spatial memory consists of multiple sub-processes, relying on different brain structures. Therefore, 50 patients with an ischemic stroke and 40 healthy participants underwent tests measuring spatial span and maze learning. By means of a computer paradigm the following aspects of memory for object locations were assessed: (1) object location binding; (2) positional memory; (

Impaired facial affect recognition and emotional changes in subjects with transmodal cortical lesions.

The present study attempts to identify cortical lesion sites associated with deficits in the decoding of emotional facial expressions and with changes of emotional states. A consecutive sample of 68 subjects with lesions caused by microsurgical tumor resection or by intracerebral hemorrhage were compared with 16 clinical and 15 healthy control subjects. A set of neuropsychological test measures - two experimental tasks requiring the sorting and rating of emotional facial expressions, and an adjective checklist as a measure of mood state - were administered. Distinguishing the functional roles of multiple regions in distributed neural systems for visual working memory.

We have investigated the human neural systems for visual working memory using functional magnetic resonance imaging to distinguish sustained activity during memory delays from transient responses related to perceptual and motor operations. These studies have identified six distinct frontal regions that demonstrate sustained activity during memory delays. These regions could be distinguished from brain regions in extrastriate cortex that participate more in perception and from brain regions in medial and lateral frontal cortex that participate more in motor control. Moreover, the working memory

Right N170 modulation in a face discrimination task: an account for categorical perception of familiar faces.

Behavioral studies have shown that two different morphed faces belonging to the same identity are harder to discriminate than two faces stemming from two different identities. The temporal course of this categorical perception effect has been explored through event-related potentials. Three kinds of pairs were presented in a matching task: (1) two different morphed faces representing the same identity (within), (2) two other faces representing two different identities (between), and (3) two identical morphed faces (same). Following the second face onset in the pair, the amplitude of the right

[Multiband spectral analysis and standardized markers of the slope of pediatric electroencephalograms].

INTRODUCTION: The infantile electroencephalogram has been studied in connection with many cognitive disabilities. Although normal resting infantile bioelectric recordings are known, the cortical distribution of electroencephalographic frequencies during other sensory and/or cognitive mental processes is less well known. OBJECTIVE: Our interest is based on the description of EEGs of a homogeneous sample of healthy children and their relation to intellectual activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample studied was made up of 13 healthy children with an average age of 9.3 +/- 1.3 years, on whom

Different time course between scene processing and face processing: a MEG study.

Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), the neural response to scenes was recorded and compared with that to faces. The prominent MEG signals in response to scenes appeared 200-300 ms after the stimulus presentation while those in response to faces appeared between 150 and 200 ms. Source locations of the signals were estimated in the right parahippocampal and parieto-occipital regions with a latency of 300 ms for the scene response, whereas those were estimated in the lingual or fusiform gyri bilaterally with a latency of 160 ms for the face response. These data suggest that both the temporal and

On the relationship between knowledge and memory for pictures: evidence from the study of patients with semantic dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Current views of long-term memory presume that both the hippocampal complex and the neocortex play interactive, but separate, roles in the storage of memories. While the neocortex is considered the eventual and permanent store for our memories, the encoding of recently experienced events is thought to be initially dependent upon the hippocampus and closely related structures. Neuropsychological studies have demonstrated that damage to the medial temporal lobe results in a retrograde amnesia extending back in time, with better preservation of older memories. The converse pattern has been shown

The effects of speech output technology in the learning of graphic symbols.

The effects of auditory stimuli in the form of synthetic speech output on the learning of graphic symbols were evaluated. Three adults with severe to profound mental retardation and communication impairments were taught to point to lexigrams when presented with words under two conditions. In the first condition, participants used a voice output communication aid to receive synthetic speech as antecedent and consequent stimuli. In the second condition, with a nonelectronic communications board, participants did not receive synthetic speech. A parallel treatments design was used to evaluate the

The relationships among facial emotion recognition, social skills, and quality of life.

Forty-six adults with mild or moderate mental retardation living in a large residential facility were administered the socialization domain of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, a subjective measure of quality of life, and a facial emotion recognition test. There were significant differences in accuracy of emotion recognition among specific emotions. However, the only significant correlate of facial emotion recognition was IQ. Possible relationships among facial emotion recognition and basic versus more subtle indices of socialization are explored.

Covert face recognition in prosopagnosia: a dissociable function?

Covert face recognition was investigated in a patient with prosopagnosia without object agnosia. This patient performed well in various face processing tasks like expression analysis and feature processing and had relatively preserved semantic knowledge about persons, but was slightly impaired in the visual matching of unfamiliar faces. In face-name paired-associate relearning task, covert face recognition was demonstrated to be above-chance. However, as this task cannot be meaningfully applied to control subjects, results do not necessarily indicate that the degree of covert face recognition
