443 subjects were examined, 235 applying to the physician due to the occurrence of skin dermatoses (group I) and 208 workers referred for periodic examinations (group II). In group I skin dermatoses were found in 100, i.e. 85%, of the subjects and in group II in 99 i.e. 48% of the subjects. In both groups the most frequent dermatosis was feet skin inflammation, especially interdigital intertrigo. Oil acne was diagnosed in 15, ordinary acne in 23, pityriasis versicolor in 19. erythrasma in 10, and eczema and contact dermatitis in 7 subjects of the first group and 3 subjects of the other group. …

EV is an autosomal recessive disease which usually begins in infancy or childhood, with an average age of onset of 9. Flat warts are most common, but pityriasis-like warts occur in approximately 75% of patients. Warts are disseminated and chronic. Cancer may develop as early as age 13; the average age of onset is 31. About 1/3 rd. of patients develop cancer of the skin usually multiple and in light-exposed areas. It may take only two years from wart to cancer, or many more years. The cancer is carcinoma-in-situ of the Bowenoid type or squamous cell carcinoma. Two deaths have occured by local i…

The causality of thymoma (TM) or thymic hyperplasia and various autoimmune diseases (AISs) remains poorly understood. To date, there have been no confirmed cases of pathologically complete regression of TM. We present a rare case of complete regression of an anterior mediastinal tumour secondary to the removal of metallic dental crowns as a treatment for metal allergy assessed to exacerbate pityriasis rubra pilaris, a rare cutaneous disease. After dental crown removal, the skin lesions improved, and the anterior mediastinal nodule (AMN) shrank rapidly through transient enlargement with a low d…

Malassezia furfur is a dimorphic yeast that is part of the human skin microflora. This fungus is a pathogen of a certain skin diseases, such as pityriasis versicolor, and in rare cases causes systemic infection in neonates. However, the role of dimorphism in the pathogenicity remains unclear. A modified induction medium (IM) was successfully able to induce mycelial growth of M. furfur under both solid and liquid condition. Filamentous elements with branching hyphae were observed when cultured in the IM. Furthermore, addition of bovine fetus serum into the liquid IM did not promote hyphal forma…

Most species of this genus are lipid-dependent yeasts, which colonize the seborrheic part of the skin, and they have been reported to be associated with pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. Malassezia have been re-classified into 7 species based on molecular biological analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA/RNA and new Malassezia species were reported. As members of the genus Malassezia share similar morphological and biochemical characteristics, it was thought to be difficult to differentiate between them based on phenotypic features. While …

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to analyze the leprosy situation, focusing on the adult population of the town of Buriticupu, State of Maranh … cases) and the lepromatous form (1 case). The study also identified other skin diseases, including pityriasis versicolor, scabies, mycosis, vitiligo and carcinoma.
CONCLUSIONS: The high detection coefficient defines the town of Buriticupu, MA, as hyperendemic for leprosy. Active cases search is an important method for disease control.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is an uncommon dermatosis associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in association with defects in cell-mediated immunity. Malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma has been associated with lesions caused by HPV-5, HPV-8, and HPV-14. Clinically, the disease may be confused with verruca plana, seborrheic keratosis, and pityriasis versicolor. We present an unusual case of EV occurring in a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive man and discuss the clinical and histologic findings. Clinically, the patient had 1- to 3-mm hypopigmented …

Malassezia spp. are lipophilic unipolar yeasts recognized as commensals of skin that may be pathogenic under certain conditions. The genus Malassezia now comprises of seven species. This study was aimed at using a simple practical approach to speciate Malassezia yeasts from clinical material. Seventy skin scrapings from patients with pityriasis versicolor infection, positive in 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH), were cultured onto modified Dixon's agar (mDixon's agar) and Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) and incubated at 32 degrees C. Speciation was done on the basis of Gram stain morphology, catalas…

Since the taxonomic revision carried out in 1996, enlarging the genus Malassezia to comprise seven different species, a number of studies have investigated from different points of view -- mycological, molecular and immunological -- the relationships of these species with the pathologies associated with lipophilic yeasts, as well as its presence in healthy skin. From these studies, it now appears clear that Malassezia globosa is the main species associated with pityriasis versicolor, which is the only cutaneous disease in which the involvement of Malassezia is undisputed. Nevertheless, this sp…

Tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor) is a common superficial fungal infection of the stratum corneum. Caused by the fungus Malassezia furfur, this chronically recurring disease is most prevalent in the tropics but is also common in temperate climates. Treatments are available and cure rates are high, although recurrences are common. Traditional topical agents such as selenium sulfide are effective, but recurrence following treatment with these agents is likely and often rapid. Currently, therapeutic interest is focused on synthetic "-azole" antifungal drugs, which interfere with the sterol…

A house-to-house survey was conducted in a community in East Trinidad, where a clustering of cases had been observed. There were 1355 residents, of whom 73.5% had a complete visual skin examination. No new cases of leprosy were found but a variety of skin disorders were diagnosed. The most common disorder was pityriasis versicolor, which is one of the differential diagnoses of hypopigmented skin lesions. This has serious implications for the delayed diagnosis of leprosy. In all, 5 of the 9 old cases residing in the survey area suffered from paucibacillary disease, and had a history of contact …

The assessment of cell proliferation is important to our understanding of hyperproliferative disorders. In this work we evaluated the prolif … hyperkeratosis and chronic dermatitis and decreased in ichthyosis vulgaris, X-linked ichthyosis and pityriasis rubra pilaris. In most cases a parallel modification of AgNORs was found. We conclude that although PCNA immunolabelling and AgNOR staining do not provide strictly correlated values, both appear as useful markers for the assessment of keratinocyte p …

During the first three years of clinical investigation of itraconazole, more than 1,000 patients with mycoses were treated with the drug. Almost 50% were women with vaginal candidosis; a dosage of 200 mg per day for three days appeared to be optimal for their treatment. Several treatment regimens were tested for pityriasis versicolor; the minimum total dose necessary for optimal results was 1 g. A randomized comparison of 50-mg and 100-mg daily doses for the treatment of skin mycoses indicated that the optimal dosage is 100 mg.
