Caregiver Perception of the Oral-Health-Related Quality of Life of Children with Special Needs: An Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the general population, individuals with special needs tend to have worse oral health, potentially diminishing their quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the perception of parents and caregivers regarding the effect of oral health on the quality of life of individuals with special needs who received dental treatment under general anaesthesia, as well as the impact on their and their families' quality of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved participants with special needs who had undergone a dental treatment under general anaesthesia

Hierarchical differences in the encoding of amplitude modulation in the subcortical auditory system of awake nonhuman primates.

Sinusoidal amplitude modulation (SAM) is a key feature of complex sounds. Although psychophysical studies have characterized SAM perception, and neurophysiological studies in anesthetized animals report a transformation from the cochlear nucleus' (CN; brainstem) temporal code to the inferior colliculus' (IC; midbrain's) rate code, none have used awake animals or nonhuman primates to compare CN and IC's coding strategies to modulation-frequency perception. To address this, we recorded single-unit responses and compared derived neurometric measures in the CN and IC to psychometric measures of mo

Visual Acuity Thresholds in Preterm Newborns: An Experimental Study.

Purpose: Visual acuity plays a role in mediating neurological development in infants by enabling the differentiation of shapes and discriminating objects. Given the rapid structural development of the brain in the first days of life, this aspect is particularly significant for preterm infants, who typically experience this developmental phase while hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Therefore, this study aimed to assess visual acuity thresholds in preterm infants during hospitalization and to evaluate possible correlations between visual acuity and clinical parameters. Me

Somatosensory Temporal Discrimination in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Sensory differences are common in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While there is no well-accepted method to measure sensory differences objectively, there is accumulating evidence from recent years concerning sensory perception, including data concerning temporal discrimination thresholds of individuals with ASD as measured by different measures. The somatosensory temporal discrimination (STD) test measures the threshold at which an individual can temporally discriminate multiple tactile stimuli delivered in succession. We aimed to investigate tactile perception in ASD and hypothesized that ch

Brainstem Pain-Modulation Circuitry and Its Plasticity in Neuropathic Pain: Insights From Human Brain Imaging Investigations.

Acute pain serves as a protective mechanism that alerts us to potential tissue damage and drives a behavioural response that removes us from danger. The neural circuitry critical for mounting this behavioural response is situated within the brainstem and is also crucial for producing analgesic and hyperalgesic responses. In particular, the periaqueductal grey, rostral ventromedial medulla, locus coeruleus and subnucleus reticularis dorsalis are important structures that directly or indirectly modulate nociceptive transmission at the primary nociceptive synapse. Substantial evidence from experi

Response of Mouse Visual Cortical Neurons to Electric Stimulation of the Retina.

Retinal prostheses strive to restore vision to the blind by electrically stimulating the neurons that survive the disease process. Clinical effectiveness has been limited however, and much ongoing effort is devoted toward the development of improved stimulation strategies, especially ones that better replicate physiological patterns of neural signaling. Here, to better understand the potential effectiveness of different stimulation strategies, we explore the responses of neurons in the primary visual cortex to electric stimulation of the retina. A 16-channel implantable microprobe was used to

Upper airway obstruction assessment: Peak inspiratory flow and clinical COPD Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: Spirometric evaluation of upper airway obstruction (UAO) is not commonly performed by Otolaryngologists. In addition, functional evaluation of UAO by flow-volume loops (FVL) is not available in all clinical settings. More recently, peak inspiratory flow (PIF) has proven to be a useful tool to monitor UAO at the patient's bedside. The aim of this work is to assess the role of PIF measured with a simple flow metre (In-Check method) as a standardised, simple, non-invasive tool in quantifying chronic and subacute UAO in a routine clinical practice. In addition, a Clinical COPD Question

Tinnitus in Normal-Hearing Participants after Exposure to Intense Low-Frequency Sound and in Ménière's Disease Patients.

Tinnitus is one of the three classical symptoms of Ménière's disease (MD), an inner ear disease that is often accompanied by endolymphatic hydrops. Previous studies indicate that tinnitus in MD patients is dominated by low frequencies, whereas tinnitus in non-hydropic pathologies is typically higher in frequency. Tinnitus of rather low-frequency (LF) quality was also reported to occur for about 90 s in normal-hearing participants after presentation of intense, LF sound (120 dB SPL, 30 Hz, 90 s). LF sound has been demonstrated to also cause temporary endolymphatic hydrops in animal models. Here

Audiometric Characteristics of a Dutch DFNA10 Family With Mid-Frequency Hearing Impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Mutations in EYA4 can cause nonsyndromic autosomal dominant sensorineural hearing impairment (DFNA10) or a syndromic variant with hearing impairment and dilated cardiomyopathy. A mutation in EYA4 was found in a Dutch family, causing DFNA10. This study is focused on characterizing the hearing impairment in this family. DESIGN: Whole exome sequencing was performed in the proband. In addition, peripheral blood samples were collected from 23 family members, and segregation analyses were performed. All participants underwent otorhinolaryngological examinations and pure-tone audiometry,

Sensory innervation around immediately vs. delayed loaded implants: a pilot study.

Although neurophysiological and psychophysical proof of osseoperception is accumulating, histomorphometric evidence for the neural mechanisms of functional compensation following immediate and delayed implant loading is still lacking. For this randomized split-mouth study, six mongrel dogs randomly received one of four treatment protocols at 36 implant-recipient sites over 16 weeks (third maxillary incisor, third and fourth mandibular premolar): immediate implant placement and immediate loading (IIP+IL); delayed implant placement and delayed loading (DIP+DL); delayed implant placement and imme

Evidence for cortical visual substitution of chronic bilateral vestibular failure (an fMRI study).

Bilateral vestibular failure (BVF) is a rare disorder of the labyrinth or the eighth cranial nerve which has various aetiologies. BVF patients suffer from unsteadiness of gait combined with blurred vision due to oscillopsia. Functional MRI (fMRI) in healthy subjects has shown that stimulation of the visual system induces an activation of the visual cortex and ocular motor areas bilaterally as well as simultaneous deactivations of multisensory vestibular cortex areas. Our question was whether the chronic absence of bilateral vestibular input (BVF) causes a plastic cortical reorganization of the

Effects of cigarette smoking and family history of alcoholism on sweet taste perception and food cravings in women.

BACKGROUND: Despite popular beliefs that smoking affects the sensitivity and liking of sweet-tasting foods and beverages, few psychophysical studies have examined this phenomenon and none have taken into account the individual's family history of alcoholism (FH+), a predictor of heightened sweet preferences. METHODS: A within- and between-subjects study was conducted to determine the effect of both cigarette smoking and an acute exposure to nicotine on sweet taste sensitivity and preferences in women. Two groups were studied on 2 days separated by 1 week: women who were current smokers (n = 2

Dynamic visual acuity during transient and sinusoidal yaw rotation in normal and unilaterally vestibulopathic humans.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) stabilizes gaze to permit clear vision during head movements. It has been supposed that VOR function might be inferred from dynamic visual acuity (DVA), the acuity during imposed head motion. We sought to determine effectiveness of DVA for detection and lateralization of unilateral vestibulopathy, using rigorous psychophysical methods. Seventeen normal and 11 unilaterally vestibulopathic subjects underwent measurement of optically best corrected DVA during head motion. A variable size letter "E" 6 m distant was displayed in oblique random orientations to deter

Early detection of glaucomatous damage. II. Changes in the appearance of the optic disk.

Once we understand that an increase in the size of the optic disk cup is due to loss of optic nerve fibers combined with some physical tissue rearrangements, it is quite clear that cupping begins as soon as nerve loss begins. Methods to detect cupping are more sensitive to the earliest glaucoma damage than are present field testing methods. This conclusion is supported by large clinical studies and histological demonstration of nerve fiber loss prior to field loss in eyes with abnormal cups, asymmetric cupping, or nerve fiber layer abnormalities. While automated perimetry is likely to increase

Validation of Novel Clinical Scales for Perceptual Evaluation of Vocal Breathiness and Roughness.

OBJECTIVE: Perceived voice quality (VQ) ratings provide data with ordinal characteristics on arbitrary scales regarding the relative order of VQ disruptions ranging from mild to severe quality. The overarching goal of this research is to develop a new and rigorous method for perceptual evaluation of VQ using quantitative comparisons and facilitating standardized comparisons across time points, clinicians, and clinical sites. Our prior research developed standard ratio-level scales of breathy and rough VQ analogous to the sone scale that (a) have physical units, (b) are strongly related to psyc
