Highly Sensitive Person: Idiomizing Distress in Pandemic-Era Tokyo.

How does an English-language pop-psychology term become a commonly used mental health idiom in Japan, decades after its coinage? Based on twenty months of ethnographic fieldwork in Tokyo at Raku-no-Kai, a nonprofit supporting people navigating social withdrawal and related distress, this article traces the local uptake of "Highly Sensitive Person" (HSP) as a vocabulary for narrating vulnerability in everyday life. I argue that HSP functions as an emergent idiom of distress (Nichter, 1981, 2010): a flexible, morally workable language (Myers, 2015) through which people make sensitivity speakable

Optimizing Organ Transplant Programs: A Comprehensive Review of Hospital Administrative Strategies and Clinical Outcomes.

Organ transplantation and hospital administration represent interdependent components of modern healthcare systems addressing end-stage organ failure. Growing procedural complexity, resource constraints, and persistent inequities highlight a gap in integrated understanding of how hospital-level administrative practices shape transplant performance beyond clinical interventions alone. This review aims to examine how organisational structures, leadership models, operational pathways, and digital infrastructure influence efficiency, equity, and clinical outcomes within transplant programs. A narr

Evaluating the efficacy and acceptability of vagus nerve stimulation for fibromyalgia: a PRISMA-compliant protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia has imposed substantial burdens on patients' health and well-being, yet effective therapeutic options for this condition remain limited. Recently, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has emerged as a promising therapy for fibromyalgia. Nonetheless, despite the increasing number of randomized clinical trials (RCTs), current evidence remains inconclusive. Therefore, this protocol of a systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize the existing evidence to clarify the efficacy and acceptability of VNS for treating fibromyalgia. METHODS: A comprehensive search for eligi

Access for ALL in ALS: A large-scale, inclusive, collaborative consortium to unlock the molecular and genetic mechanisms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Recent progress in therapeutics for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has spurred development and imbued the field of ALS with hope for more breakthroughs, yet substantial scientific gaps persist. This unmet need remains a stark reminder that innovative paradigms are needed to invigorate ALS research. To move toward more informative, targeted, and personalized drug development, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) established a national ALS clinical research consortium called Access for ALL in ALS (ALL ALS). This new consortium is a multi-institutional effort that aims to organize the ALS

Are tai chi and qigong effective in the treatment of TBI? A systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) adversely affects both young and old and is a growing public health issue. A number of recent trends in managing TBI, such as recommending sub-threshold aerobic activity, tailoring multi-modal treatment strategies, and studying the possible role of low-grade inflammation in those with persistent symptoms, all suggest that the physical and cognitive exercise of tai chi/qigong could have benefit. METHOD: Designed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the following databases will be

The clinical course of untreated CIN2 (HPV16/18+) under active monitoring: A protocol of systematic reviews and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer (CC) is one of the most prevalent and fatal cancers among women. Nearly all forms of CC are related to HPV, and 70% of invasive CCs are associated with HPV16 and HPV18. A histologically confirmed case of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)2 or a more severe histological diagnosis is considered to be the demarcation point for treatment, but overtreatment will increases the risk of preterm birth in subsequent pregnancies. This study will evaluate the progress of CIN2 (progression, persistence, or regression) in HPV16/18+ CIN2 patients who were managed conservativ

COVID-19 vaccines and the pandemic: lessons learnt for other neglected diseases and future threats.

Through the experiences gained by accelerating new vaccines for both Ebola virus infection and COVID-19 in a public health emergency, vaccine development has benefited from a 'multiple shots on goal' approach to new vaccine targets. This approach embraces simultaneous development of candidates with differing technologies, including, when feasible, vesicular stomatitis virus or adenovirus vectors, messenger RNA (mRNA), whole inactivated virus, nanoparticle and recombinant protein technologies, which led to multiple effective COVID-19 vaccines. The challenge of COVID-19 vaccine inequity, as COVI

Efficacy and safety of Guhong injection for coronary heart disease: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is considered one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, posing a serious threat to public health. Current therapeutic approaches for CHD mainly focus on drug therapy, coronary artery bypass grafting, and percutaneous coronary intervention. However, there still exist some problems including drug side effects, adverse cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention. Guhong injection is a compound preparation of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. Several clinical studies have shown that Guhong injection can effec

Sharing data among clinical trials of therapeutics in COVID-19: Barriers and facilitators to collaborating in a crisis.

BACKGROUND: The Clinical and Translational Science Award Program (CTSA) Trial Innovation Network (TIN) was launched in 2016 to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of multisite trials by supporting the development of national infrastructure. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was therefore well-positioned to support clinical trial collaboration. The TIN was leveraged to support two initiatives: (1) to create and evaluate a mechanism for coordinating Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) activities among multiple ongoing trials of the same therapeutic agents, and (2) to share d

The third route: Using extreme decentralization to create resilient urban water systems.

For much of the world's urban population, centralized treatment plants and pipe networks built in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries provide homes with water and a means of disposing of the resulting wastewater. Due to the real or perceived inability of existing systems to deliver safe and palatable water, many users apply additional treatment prior to consumption. Where piped water supply is lacking, drinking water is obtained through water vendors at considerable cost. Despite economic inefficiencies and public health risks inherent in these two water supply systems, the high sunk costs

Tuberculosis with malaria or HIV co-infection in a large hospital in Luanda, Angola.

INTRODUCTION: Three major public health problems, tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS, are widespread in Angola, often as co-infections in the same individual. In 2009, it was assumed that 44,151 new cases of TB occurred in Angola. Interestingly, interventions such as treatment/prevention of malaria appear to reduce mortality in HIV-infected and possibly TB co-infected patients. However, despite the seriousness of the situation, current data on TB and co-infection rates are scarce. This study aimed to characterize all TB cases seen at the Hospital Sanatório de Luanda, and to determine the co-in

Generalized reproduction numbers and the prediction of patterns in waterborne disease.

Understanding, predicting, and controlling outbreaks of waterborne diseases are crucial goals of public health policies, but pose challenging problems because infection patterns are influenced by spatial structure and temporal asynchrony. Although explicit spatial modeling is made possible by widespread data mapping of hydrology, transportation infrastructure, population distribution, and sanitation, the precise condition under which a waterborne disease epidemic can start in a spatially explicit setting is still lacking. Here we show that the requirement that all the local reproduction number

A report on disability and rehabilitation medicine in Pakistan: past, present, and future directions.

Disability is a stigma in Pakistan, and cultural norms are a hindrance to the integration of the disabled into the community. Additional barriers to addressing the needs of the disabled include the lack of reliable disability epidemiologic data, inadequate funding and poor health care infrastructure, and workforce shortages. The aim of this report is to present an overview of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) in Pakistan, covering its origins, current status, and future directions. An electronic literature search (1950-2009) was conducted using the Medline, ScienceDirect, Springer Li

Reducing medication errors: a regional approach for hospitals.

Since the Institute of Medicine's report, To Err Is Human, and the subsequent publication, Crossing the Quality Chasm, the subject of reducing medical errors has gained considerable attention from patients, healthcare providers, employers and government organisations in the US. Most nonoperative errors are related to medications. Medication errors lead not only to negative repercussions subjectively experienced by both the patient and the healthcare staff, but also to additional expenditures due to complications. Education, adapting new safety systems and technology, and having clinical pharma

Following in Soper's footsteps: northeast Brazil 63 years after eradication of Anopheles gambiae.

Sub-Saharan Africa has long suffered under the yoke of the Anopheles gambiae mosquito, but for northeast Brazil (figure 1) its arrival over 60 years ago was a new and horrifying experience. This African mosquito is an exceptionally effective malaria vector because it is well adapted to feeding upon people and to exploiting aquatic habitats associated with our daily activities. Anopheles gambiae sensu lato probably accounts for most of the world's malaria deaths and socioeconomic burden. Fortunately, the Brazilian experience had a happy ending. The prospect of A gambiae spreading across much of
