Race and reproductive coercion: a qualitative assessment.

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancy is common and disproportionately occurs among low-income and African-American (AA) women. Male partners may influence women's risk of unintended pregnancy through reproductive coercion, although studies have not assessed whether racial differences in reproductive coercion impact AA women's disparate risk for unintended pregnancy. We sought to describe women's experiences with pregnancy-promoting behaviors by male partners and explore differences in such experiences by race. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with low-income, AA and White women a

Reproductive Issues in Women with Turner Syndrome.

Turner syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities affecting female infants. The severity of clinical manifestations varies and it affects multiple organ systems. Women with Turner syndrome have a 3-fold increase in mortality, which becomes even more pronounced in pregnancy. Reproductive options include adoption or surrogacy, assisted reproductive techniques, and in rare cases spontaneous pregnancy. Risks for women with Turner syndrome during pregnancy include aortic disorders, hepatic disease, thyroid disease, type 2 diabetes, and cesarean section delivery. Providers must be

Reproductive issues in sickle cell disease.

As medical advances improve survival, reduce disease-related morbidity, and improve quality of life, reproductive issues will take higher priority in the sickle cell disease (SCD) community. A wide variety of topics are addressed in this chapter, including fertility, gonadal failure, erectile dysfunction, and menstrual issues in SCD. Etiologies of impaired male fertility are multifactorial and include hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction, sperm abnormalities, and complications of medical therapies. Much less is known about the prevalence and etiology of infertility in women with SCD. Other repro

Reproductive history and risk of colorectal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Sex hormones may be associated with colorectal adenocarcinoma, although the association of pregnancy history and risk of colorectal cancer is not consistent. METHODS: We conducted a population-based nested case-control study of persons born between 1932 and 2008 who are in the Swedish Multi-Generation Register. In total, 12,915 women and 15,519 men with colorectal adenocarcinoma were identified during follow-up in the Swedish Cancer Register; 10 age- and sex-matched controls were selected for each case. Number of children and age at first and last birth were analyzed in relation t

Contexts of reproductive loss in lesbian couples.

Lesbian couples seek to become parents in a heteronormative world and in the context of complex biological, social, and legal challenges that may constrain same-sex parenting. Because of these constraints and challenges, lesbian couples experiencing a reproductive loss may encounter issues that heterosexual couples typically will not. Prior to pregnancy, lesbians may experience loss and grief because they cannot conceive a child together without the assistance of a third party. Same-sex families are marginalized; simply deciding to become parents leaves them open to criticism and negative judg

Reproductive health outcomes in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are common psychiatric disorders in women at childbearing age. Previous research suggests that eating disorders are associated with fertility problems, unplanned pregnancies, and increased risk of induced abortions and miscarriages. The purpose of this study was to assess how eating disorders are related to reproductive health outcomes in a representative patient population. METHOD: Female patients (N = 2,257) treated at the eating disorder clinic of Helsinki University Central Hospital during 1995-2010 were compared with matched controls identified from the Centra

Synthetic cannabinoids and potential reproductive consequences.

Increases in emergency room visits due to abuse of designer drugs, popularly known by the street names "K2" and "Spice," are a cause for social, judicial, and clinical concerns. The psychoactive components in these herbal drugs mainly consist of different synthetic cannabinoids, and users of these street drugs are primarily within the age group of 12 to 20years old. The abusive use of synthetic cannabinoids results in anxiety, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, elevated blood pressure, tremors, seizures, hallucinations, and paranoid behavior, but the effects of maternal use of synthetic cannabinoi

Reproductive health care of adolescent women.

Reproductive health care of adolescent women is focused on prevention of disease. Adolescents are at higher risk for pelvic inflammatory disease than adult women; therefore, screening regularly for sexually transmitted infections is important. Immunization for human papillomavirus is the primary means of cervical cancer prevention because new guidelines recommend not initiating Papanicolaou smears until the age of 21. Contraception for adolescents is a challenge, and clinicians should focus on long-acting, reversible contraception in this group. The treatment of pelvic pain and menstrual disor

Reproductive history and breast cancer risk.

The fact that reproductive factors have significant influence on the risk of breast cancer is well known. Early age of first full-term birth is highly protective against late-onset breast cancers, but each pregnancy, including the first one, increases the risk of early-onset breast cancer. Estradiol and progesterone induce receptor activator of NF-kappa B ligand (RANKL) in estrogen receptor (ER)- and progesterone receptor (PgR)-positive luminal cells. RANKL then acts in a paracrine fashion on the membranous RANK of ER/PgR-negative epithelial stem cells of the breast. This reaction cascade is t

Maternal environment and the reproductive function of the offspring.

Fetal programming of metabolic diseases is now a well established concept. The scope of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease has, however, widened and led to the identification of new targets of fetal programming, notably effects on reproductive function. Epidemiologic studies about maternal nutrition and effects on offspring's fertility are rare, but a link between impaired fetal growth, possibly caused by maternal malnutrition, and reproductive function, has been established. The methodologic limitations inherent to human epidemiologic studies can be complemented through the use o

Adiponectin and the control of female reproductive functions.

Adiponectin is the most abundant protein secreted by the white adipose tissue. It circulates at high levels in the bloodstream and its serum concentration is inversely correlated with body fat mass. The wide distribution of adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1, AdipoR2, and T-cadherin) in peripheral tissues and organs allows adiponectin to exert pleiotropic effects on whole-body metabolism. Besides its well-known antidiabetic, antiatherogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties, accumulating evidence suggests a direct role for adiponectin in reproductive tissues. The mammalian ovary and the ovarian fo

Overview of the impact of kisspeptin on reproductive function.

Since 2003, kisspeptin and its receptor (KISS1R, also called GPR54) are recognized as major actors of the gonadotrope axis. Mutations of genes encoding the peptide or the receptor have been identified in patients with precocious puberty or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. They are strong stimulators of GnRH neurons and are involved in various mechanisms regulating gonadotrope axis as puberty induction or positive and negative feedback regulation on the gonadotrope axis by gonadal steroids. They also mediated some metabolic or environmental signals on the reproduction axis. Kisspeptins are synthe…

Bacterial reproductive pathogens of cats and dogs.

With the notable exception of Brucella canis, exogenous bacterial pathogens are uncommon causes of reproductive disease in cats and dogs. Most bacterial reproductive infections are endogenous, and predisposing factors for infection are important. This article reviews the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and public health significance of bacterial reproductive pathogens in cats and dogs.

Robotics in reproductive surgery: strengths and limitations.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques are becoming increasingly common in gynecologic surgery. However, traditional laparoscopy can be challenging. A robotic surgical system gives several advantages over traditional laparoscopy and has been incorporated into reproductive gynecological surgeries. The objective of this article is to review recent publications on robotically-assisted laparoscopy for reproductive surgery. Recent clinical research supports robotic surgery as resulting in less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, faster return to normal activities, and decreased blood loss.

Evaluation of the reproductive and developmental risks of caffeine.

A risk analysis of in utero caffeine exposure is presented utilizing epidemiological studies and animal studies dealing with congenital malformation, pregnancy loss, and weight reduction. These effects are of interest to teratologists, because animal studies are useful in their evaluation. Many of the epidemiology studies did not evaluate the impact of the "pregnancy signal," which identifies healthy pregnancies and permits investigators to identify subjects with low pregnancy risks. The spontaneous abortion epidemiology studies were inconsistent and the majority did not consider the confoundi

Adhesion-GPCRs in the male reproductive tract.

The male reproductive tract expresses a diverse array of adhesion-GPCRs, many in a highly specific and regulated manner. Despite this specificity of expression, little is known about the function of this receptor family in male reproductive physiology. Insights into function are beginning to emerge with the increasing availability of genetically modified mice harbouring mutations in these genes. Gpr64 is the best characterised of the adhesion-GPCRs in the male reproductive system and the phenotype of Gpr64 knock-out mice implicates this receptor in the regulation of fluid absorption in the eff

Gene transfer to the mammalian reproductive tract.

This review summarizes the results of research on gene transfer to the mammalian genital tract. Gene transfer experiments have been developed during the last 2 decades and have been applied using in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo procedures. (i) In vitro methods have been applied to the uterine epithelial cells with the principal purpose of analysing some pathological change occurring in the uterus. In the male tract, epididymal cell lines have been used to evaluate the expression of particular genes and the function of specific proteins. (ii) Ex vivo methods have been applied to both the uterus a

[A case of labial adhesion in a reproductive woman].

A 21-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of voiding-difficulty and urinary retention. On examination, the labia was found to be extensively fused with a pinhole opening in the center of adhesion from which urine discharged. The fusion was separated surginally under the diagnosis of labial adhesion. Labial adhesions generally occur in children or post-menopausal women, but are extremely rare in reproductive women. This is the sixth case of labial adhesion in a reproductive woman reported in Japan.
