Safety assessment and sub-group analysis (gender-based and age-based) of Rocuronium: A real-world pharmacovigilance study from the FAERS database.

BACKGROUND: Most of the evidence for rocuronium-related adverse events came from clinical trials or case reports, with relatively small sample sizes. It is currently unclear whether rocuronium may cause other serious adverse reactions. This study aims to analysis adverse events related to rocuronium from FAERS database. METHODS: The adverse events data related to rocuronium from 2004 Q1 to 2024 Q2 were collected. After standardizing the data, signal quantification techniques (ROR, PRR, BCPNN and EBGM) were used for analysis. Gender-based and age-based differences were also conducted. RESULTS

Double Trouble: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) Presenting as Overlapping Miller Fisher Syndrome (MFS) and Pharyngeal-Cervical-Brachial (PCB) Variant.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is the leading cause of acute flaccid paralysis in India following the decline of poliomyelitis. Classical GBS typically presents with ascending symmetrical weakness and areflexia, while atypical variants, such as Miller Fisher Syndrome (MFS) and the Pharyngeal-Cervical-Brachial (PCB) variant, show distinct clinical patterns that are often under-recognized, particularly in resource-limited settings. This report describes a rare case of a 45-year-old previously healthy woman who developed progressive ophthalmoplegia, bulbar weakness, neck flexor weakness, and proxi

Life-Threatening Conditions and Preoperative Complications Associated with Cardiac Neoplasm Do Not Affect Surgical Outcomes or Mortality.

Background: Cardiac neoplasms may cause life-threatening symptoms associated with cerebral infarction, ventricular arrhythmias, and heart failure. Emergency surgery or preoperative treatment may be required for these patients. However, no study has reported the surgical outcomes in cases involving cardiac neoplasms with life-threatening complications. The current study investigated the mid- to long-term outcomes of surgery in patients with cardiac neoplasms in life-threatening conditions. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 36 consecutive patients who underwent resection for cardiac n

Clinically relevant mouse models of severe spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type 1.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress (SMARD1) is a lethal infantile disease, characterized by the loss of motor neurons leading to muscular atrophy, diaphragmatic paralysis, and weakness in the trunk and limbs. Mutations in IGHMBP2, a ubiquitously expressed DNA/RNA helicase, have been shown to cause a wide spectrum of motor neuron disease. Though mutations in IGHMBP2 are mostly associated with SMARD1, milder alleles cause the axonal neuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2S (CMT2S), and some null alleles are potentially a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing in the Breastfeeding Infant.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the importance of utilizing fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) when evaluating breastfeeding infants with suspected dysphagia. Failure to recognize and account for the fundamentally different physiology of the primarily breastfed infant can lead to false assumptions about the safety of breastfeeding in this understudied patient population. METHODS: Case-series. The medical records of patients referred to an urban, university-based, pediatric hospital for FEES from February 2017 to October 2020 were reviewed. Their presenting symptoms, dysphagia sev

7,8-Dihydroxyflavone accelerates recovery of Brown-Sequard syndrome in adult female rats with spinal cord lateral hemisection.

BACKGROUND: 7,8-Dihydroxyflavone (DHF) mimicks the physiological action of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Since local BDNF delivery to the injured spinal cord enhanced diaphragmatic respiratory function, we aimed to ascertain whether DHF might have similar beneficial effects after Brown-Sequard Syndrome in a rat model of spinal cord lateral hemisection (HX) at the 9th thoracic (T9) vertebral level. METHODS: Three sets of adult female rats were included: sham+vehicle group, T9HX+vehicle group and T9HX+DHF group. On the day of surgery, HX+DHF group received DHF (5 mg/kg) while HX+veh

Functional results of endoscopic arytenoid abduction lateropexy for bilateral vocal fold palsy.

PURPOSE: Endoscopic arytenoid abduction lateropexy (EAAL) is a reliable surgical solution for the minimally invasive treatment of bilateral vocal fold palsy (BVFP), providing a stable airway by the lateralization of the arytenoid cartilages with a simple suture. The nondestructive manner of the intervention theoretically leads to higher regeneration potential, thus better voice quality. The study aimed to investigate the respiratory and phonatory outcomes of this treatment concept. METHODS: 61 BVFP patients with significant dyspnea associated with thyroid/parathyroid surgery were treated by u

Transcriptomes in rat sciatic nerves at different stages of experimental autoimmune neuritis determined by RNA sequencing.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is characterized by acute immune-mediated peripheral neuropathy, which may result in rapidly progressive paralysis and fatal respiratory failure. As the underlying pathological mechanisms of GBS are unclear, we surveyed the transcriptome of rats with experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN), a model of GBS. Briefly, sciatic nerves on both sides were collected from 8-10-week-old Lewis rats during early (10 days post-induction), peak (19 days) and late neuritis (30 days). Total RNA was sequenced to identify differentially expressed genes. Compared to control rats with

Global epidemiology of nonpolio enteroviruses causing severe neurological complications: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Enteroviruses are RNA viruses found as commensals in the human gut and respiratory system, which may cause a wide spectrum of disease. Enteroviruses may cause severe neurologic complications including acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and encephalitis and are the most commonly diagnosed agents of viral meningitis. Outbreaks of more severe disease are often associated with particular genotypes, such as enterovirus-A71 causing rhombencephalitis and AFP. There are more than 300 described genotypes of human enterovirus, with overlaps in clinical phenotypes between genotypes, and uncertainty about whic

Leaky intestine and impaired microbiome in an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mouse model.

Emerging evidence has demonstrated that intestinal homeostasis and the microbiome play essential roles in neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by a progressive loss of motor neurons and muscle atrophy. Currently, there is no effective treatment. Most patients die within 3-5 years due to respiratory paralysis. Although the death of motor neurons is a hallmark of ALS, other organs may also contribute to the disease progression. We examined the gut of an ALS mouse model, G93A, which expresses mut…

Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein M Facilitates Enterovirus Infection.

UNLABELLED: Picornavirus infection involves a dynamic interplay of host and viral protein interactions that modulates cellular processes to facilitate virus infection and evade host antiviral defenses. Here, using a proteomics-based approach known as TAILS to identify protease-generated neo-N-terminal peptides, we identify a novel target of the poliovirus 3C proteinase, the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteinM(hnRNP M), a nucleocytoplasmic shuttling RNA-binding protein that is primarily known for its role in pre-mRNA splicing. hnRNPMis cleaved in vitro by poliovirus and coxsackievirus B3 (

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus protein nsp1 is a novel eukaryotic translation inhibitor that represses multiple steps of translation initiation.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus nonstructural protein 1 (nsp1) binds to the 40S ribosomal subunit and inhibits translation, and it also induces a template-dependent endonucleolytic cleavage of host mRNAs. nsp1 inhibits the translation of cap-dependent and internal ribosome entry site (IRES)-driven mRNAs, including SARS coronavirus mRNAs, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and cricket paralysis virus (CrPV) IRES-driven mRNAs that are resistant to nsp1-induced RNA cleavage. We used an nsp1 mutant, nsp1-CD, lacking the RNA cleavage function, to delineate the mechanism of nsp1-mediated

Optimal arytenoid adduction based on quantitative real-time voice analysis.

HYPOTHESIS: The optimal degree of arytenoid rotation for arytenoid adduction (AA) can be determined using quantitative real-time voice analysis. STUDY DESIGN: Repeated measures with each larynx serving as its own control. METHODS: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (VFP) was modeled in five excised canine larynges. Medialization laryngoplasty (ML) was performed, followed by AA. The optimal degree of arytenoid rotation was determined using real-time measurements of vocal efficiency (V(E) ), percent jitter, and percent shimmer. After the optimal degree of rotation was determined, the arytenoid wa
