The "Sunday Blues": a qualitative exploration of manifestations, contributing factors, and coping strategies among employees.

INTRODUCTION: Many employees experience a decline in mood as the weekend ends, often referred to in popular culture as the "Sunday Blues." Despite its widespread recognition, the phenomenon remains scientifically underexplored and conceptually unclear. This study examined how the "Sunday Blues" manifests, which individual and contextual factors shape the experience, and how employees cope with it. METHODS: We conducted six focus groups with 26 employees in the Netherlands who frequently experienced, or had previously experienced, low moods in anticipation of the workweek. Before the focus gro

Emotion Regulation as a Mechanism of Mindfulness in Individual Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Depression and Anxiety Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders underscores the need for a more profound comprehension of effective treatments. Mindfulness has shown promise in enhancing treatment outcomes and preventing relapse in these conditions, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. METHODS: This study examined the role of emotion regulation as a mediator in the relationship between changes in mindfulness and the reduction of depression and anxiety symptoms during individual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). We tracked longitudinal changes in mindfulness, emotion

The Mechanisms of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer Patients and Survivors: A Systematic Review.

While many systematic reviews have focused on relationships between mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) and myriad outcomes, no systematic review has examined the mechanisms through which MBIs affect outcomes in the context of cancer. A systematic review was conducted of experimental or quasi-experimental studies that longitudinally examined potential mechanisms of the effects of either mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) or mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) interventions with adult cancer patients and survivors. Searches were conducted in Pubmed, APA PsycInfo, Cumulated Inde

Preliminary validation of the Cognitive Affective Mindfulness Scale-Revised in cancer populations.

OBJECTIVE: A brief, valid, and comprehensive measure of mindfulness is needed for cancer populations. This study examined the factor structure, internal consistency, construct validity, and measurement invariance of the 10-item Cognitive Affective Mindfulness Scale-Revised (CAMS-R) in patients with cancer. METHODS: Patients with breast, gastrointestinal, lung, or prostate cancer (N = 404, 50% stage IV cancer, 51% women) were recruited from academic and public clinics in Indianapolis, IN. Patients completed the CAMS-R and other psychological measures at one time point. Confirmatory factor anal

Same salience, different consequences: Disturbed inter-network connectivity during a social oddball paradigm in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: So far findings on emotional face processing among depressed individuals reveal an inconsistent image, with only some studies supporting a mood-congruent bias in salience processing. Thereby, many results are based on the processing of sad emotions and mostly focused on resting-state connectivity analysis. The present study aimed to target this misbalance by implementing a social oddball paradigm, with a special focus on the amygdala, the ACC, the insula and subdivisions of insula and ACC. METHODS: Twenty-seven depressed patients and twenty-seven non-depressed controls took part i

Dissociation and emotion regulation strategies: A meta-analytic review.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical and neurobiological models posited that dissociative mechanisms might affect processes involved in emotional generation and regulation. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive theoretical framework that systematically includes dissociation within emotional functioning. METHODS: The current study aims at conducting a meta-analytic review on the relationship between dissociation and emotion regulation in order to empirically estimate to what extent dissociation is related to emotion regulation processes. The meta-analysis was based on r coefficient as effect size measure

A brief intervention for PTSD versus treatment as usual: Study protocol for a non-inferiority randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although existing treatment methods are effective in alleviating PTSD symptoms, several barriers to care exist, such as waiting times, avoidant tendencies, shame and stigma, potentially leading to fewer people seeking therapy or premature dropouts. A potential solution to battling these barriers is Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT), a single-session exposure-oriented intervention for PTSD. Although not yet subjected to empirical investigation, clinical experiences suggest an often immediate and long-lasting effect following the intervention related to patient's symptomatology

Repetitive Negative Thinking and Interpretation Bias in Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT; e.g., worry about the future, rumination about the past) and the tendency to interpret ambiguous information in negative ways (interpretation bias) are cognitive processes that play a maintaining role in anxiety and depression, and recent evidence has demonstrated that interpretation bias maintains RNT. In the context of perinatal mental health, RNT has received minimal research attention (despite the fact that it predicts later anxiety and depression), and interpretation bias remains unstudied (despite evidence that it maintains depression and an

Pain appraisal and quality of life in 108 outpatients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Individual differences in emotional functioning, pain appraisal processing, and perceived social support may play a relevant role in the subjective experience of pain. Due to the paucity of data regarding individuals with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), the present study aimed to examine pain intensity, emotional functioning (psychological distress and alexithymia), pain appraisal (pain beliefs, pain catastrophizing, and pain-related coping strategies) and social support, and their relationships with the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with RA. Data were collected from 108 female

Development of the Self-Forgiveness Dual-Process Scale.

Progress in the scientific study of self-forgiveness reveals a need for (a) integration of the extant self-forgiveness literature with general psychological theory, (b) development of measures that reflect nuanced conceptualizations of self-forgiveness, (c) better understanding of the impact of self-forgiveness on personal and interpersonal functioning, and (d) development of evidence-based clinical applications of self-forgiveness. Accordingly, we conceptualized self-forgiveness within the framework of Social Cognitive Theory and developed the Self-Forgiveness Dual-Process Scale to assess val

Emotion Regulation Therapy: A Mechanism-Targeted Treatment for Disorders of Distress.

"Distress disorders," which include generalized anxiety disorder and major depression are often highly comorbid with each other and appear to be characterized by common temperamental features that reflect heightened sensitivity to underlying motivational systems related to threat/safety and reward/loss. Further, individuals with distress disorders tend to utilize self-referential processes (e.g., worry, rumination, self-criticism) in a maladaptive attempt to respond to motivationally relevant distress, often resulting in suboptimal contextual learning. Despite the success of cognitive behavior

Understanding the early support needs of survivors of traumatic events: The example of severe injury survivors.

OBJECTIVE: In the aftermath of a potentially traumatic event, people may experience a range of mental health outcomes, including subclinical symptoms and distress. There is growing evidence that trauma survivors with subclinical symptoms are at increased risk of developing later psychiatric disorders, and this is especially the case with severe injury survivors. There is a need to develop evidence-based, early, brief interventions for those who are at risk of developing trauma-related psychopathology. To date, interventions for this at-risk group have largely been derived from expert consensus

The clinical utility of metacognitive beliefs and processes in emotional distress in people with multiple sclerosis.

AIM: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease that poses significant life challenges. Depression and anxiety often occur in people with MS (PwMS). An information processing model of psychopathology, the Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model specifies that maladaptive metacognitive beliefs play a fundamental role in the development and maintenance of distress. The model also asserts that a style of thinking known as the cognitive attentional syndrome (CAS), which consists of worry and rumination, focusing on sources of threat, and unhelpful coping responses, is comm

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Neuroticism (Stress Vulnerability): A Pilot Randomized Study.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroticism, a characteristic associated with increased stress vulnerability and the tendency to experience distress, is strongly linked to risk of different forms of psychopathology. However, there are few evidence-based interventions to target neuroticism. This pilot study investigated the efficacy and acceptability of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) compared with an online self-help intervention for individuals with high levels of neuroticism. The MBCT was modified to address psychological processes that are characteristic of neuroticism. METHOD: Participants with hig

A randomized controlled trial of strong minds: A school-based mental health program combining acceptance and commitment therapy and positive psychology.

To date, most early intervention programs have been based on emotion regulation strategies that address dysfunctional cognitive appraisals, problem-solving skills, and rumination. Another emotion regulation strategy, 'acceptance' training, has largely been overlooked. To examine the efficacy of this strategy, a school-based mental health program combining positive psychology with acceptance and commitment therapy (Strong Minds) was evaluated in a randomized controlled trial with a sample of 267 Year 10 and 11 high-school students in Sydney, Australia. Mixed models for repeated measures examine

Catastrophizing, rumination, and reappraisal prospectively predict adolescent PTSD symptom onset following a terrorist attack.

BACKGROUND: Disruptions in emotion regulation are a transdiagnostic risk factor for psychopathology. However, scant research has examined whether emotion regulation strategies are related to the onset of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among youths exposed to trauma. We investigated whether pretrauma emotion regulation strategies prospectively predicted PTSD symptom onset after the 2013 Boston Marathon terrorist attack among adolescents and whether these associations were moderated by the degree of exposure to media coverage of the attack. METHODS: A sample of 78 Boston-area ado

Emotional reactivity and regulation in anxious and nonanxious youth: a cell-phone ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Reviews have highlighted anxious youths' affective disturbances, specifically, elevated negative emotions and reliance on ineffective emotion regulation strategies. However, no study has examined anxious youth's emotional reactivity and regulation in real-world contexts. METHODS: This study utilized an ecological momentary assessment approach to compare real-world emotional experiences of 65 youth with generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, or social phobia (ANX) and 65 age-matched healthy controls (CON), ages 9-13 years. RESULTS: Hierarchical linear models reveal

The relationship of demographic, clinical, cognitive and personality variables to the discrepancy between self and clinician rated depression.

BACKGROUND: The measurement of depression severity is an important aspect of both clinical and research practices. However, studies examining the self-report Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the clinician Hamilton Depression Rating Scale indicate only moderate correlations. The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between two self-report measures, the revised BDI, the Hopkins Symptom Checklist with the clinician rated, Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale. The secondary aim was to investigate patient factors which contribute to discordant ratings. METHODS: Depression sever
