A longitudinal study of the role of childhood temperament in the later development of eating concerns.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between childhood temperament and the later development of eating and body concerns in early adolescent children. METHOD: The Australian Temperament Project has followed a cohort of children from birth, assessing temperament factors such as Negative Emotionality, Persistence, Approach/Withdrawal, and Activity. Using a longitudinal design, the study reports on the relationship between temperament measured from infancy onward and eating and body concerns at 12-13 years of age. Participants (597 girls, 631 boys) completed the Eating Disorders Inven

Social, blood/injury, and agoraphobic fears in patients with physically unexplained chronic pain: are they clinically significant?

Recently, there has been increased interest in the extent to which chronic pain patients fear and avoid activities that are thought to be related to the experience of pain. To date, however, few studies have evaluated the nature and extent of nonpain fears in these patients. The purpose of the present study was to address this paucity. The Fear Questionnaire was administered to 130 patients with physically unexplained chronic pain and 93 patients with a chronic condition unrelated to pain. Results indicated that the chronic pain patients were more fearful and avoidant of social interactions/si

Somatic symptom and related disorders in pediatric patients: Associations with parent psychiatric and substance use histories.

Parental response to pediatric patients with somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) can impact symptom presentation. However, little is known about the impact of parent psychiatric and substance use disorder (SUD) history on the functional status and medical healthcare utilization of patients with SSRDs. The current study explored the associations between parent psychiatric & SUD history and patient somatic symptoms, functional disability, and hospital course in a medically hospitalized sample of pediatric patients with SSRDs. The electronic medical records of 375 pediatric patients wit

Managing co-occurring substance use and pain disorders.

The safest pain treatment strategy for an individual at risk or recovering from addiction is a nonopioid and benzodiazepine-free approach. If an opioid treatment is necessary, the extent of the risk can be stratified by the use of a biopsychosocial assessment and opioid screening tools. Individuals at high risk should have the greatest amount of structure and monitoring. A written informed consent and treatment agreement can provide a framework for the patient and the patient’s family, as well as the clinician. The structure of treatment should specify only that one prescribing physician will

The effect of traumatic bereavement on tsunami-exposed survivors.

Fourteen months after the 2004 tsunami, mental health outcome was assessed in 187 bereaved relatives, 308 bereaved friends, and in 3,020 nonbereaved Swedish survivors. Of the bereaved relatives, 41% reported posttraumatic stress reactions and 62% reported impaired general mental health. Having been caught or chased by the tsunami in combination with bereavement was associated with increased posttraumatic stress reactions. Complicated grief reactions among relatives were almost as frequent as posttraumatic stress reactions. The highest levels of psychological distress were found among those who

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and related disorders in Parkinson's disease.

This study evaluated the frequency of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS), and related disorders (e.g., tic disorders, trichotillomania, and body dysmorphic disorder) in 100 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 100 individually matched controls. When compared with controls, OCD, OCS, and related disorders were not higher in PD. Findings revealed an association of some OCS with left side motor symptom predominance in PD patients, particularly for symmetry and ordering/arranging. These findings suggest that the right hemisphere likely functions in the e

Self-reported acceptable pain intensity is associated with psychosocial burden beyond pain severity in chronic pain patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported acceptable pain intensity is collected as part of intake procedures in some pain clinic settings, yet has rarely been examined in relation to psychosocial outcomes. This study investigated whether acceptable pain intensity is associated with psychosocial symptom burden (somatization, anxiety, sleep impairment, perceived stress, depression, and pain-related disability) in chronic pain patients after adjusting for pain severity and trauma history. METHODS: Secondary analysis of 822 chronic pain patients from a German university pain clinic (previously published cohort)

The Effect of Sudden Death Bereavement on the Risk for Suicide.

Background: Bereavement after a sudden death is associated with psychiatric sequelae including suicidal ideation and behavior. However, there is still uncertainty about whether bereavement due to suicide increases the risk for suicidal behavior more than bereavement due to other causes of death does. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate suicidal risk among sudden death-bereaved participants and to identify risk factors for suicidality that may be over-represented in those who are suicide-bereaved. Method: In total, 180 adult participants, half of whom had experienced the sudden death of a first-

Traditional acupuncture for people with medically unexplained symptoms: a longitudinal qualitative study of patients' experiences.

BACKGROUND: People with medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) are helped by interventions that combine physical and psychological explanations and treatment. Traditional acupuncture may offer such a perspective, but its use for these patients has not been investigated. AIM: To ascertain how patients with MUPS perceive and experience five-element acupuncture treatment. DESIGN AND SETTING: A longitudinal qualitative interview study, nested in a randomised controlled trial was carried out in four general practices in socioeconomically diverse areas of London. METHOD: A purposive sampl

Identification of somatic and anxiety symptoms which contribute to the detection of depression in primary health care.

Somatic symptoms and anxiety symptoms are often disregarded in the detection of depression in primary care. The present investigation examined to what extent somatic and anxiety symptoms recorded with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview-Primary Health Care Version (CIDI-PHC) can improve the detection of depression as compared to the General Health Questionnaire-12-item version alone. Data from the World Health Organization study on Psychological Problems in General Health Care were used. The study sample consisted of primary care attenders from 15 centres from all over the world w

Duloxetine, 60 mg once daily, for major depressive disorder: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite treatment advances, major depressive disorder (MDD) is still a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Current therapies frequently fall short of providing full remission. In addition, physical symptoms are commonly seen in MDD patients, increasing overall morbidity and health care utilization. Duloxetine hydrochloride, a dual reuptake inhibitor of serotonin and norepinephrine, was evaluated for efficacy and tolerability/safety in the treatment of MDD and associated physical symptoms. METHOD: In this multicenter, double-blind, parallel-group study, adult patients wit
