Are microsurgical techniques still indicated for posterior circulation aneurysms? A 10-year longitudinal analysis of clinical and radiological outcomes in the post-endovascular era.

OBJECTIVE: High rates of retreatment remain a concern after endovascular therapy (EVT) for posterior circulation aneurysms. The authors aimed to analyze the indications and outcomes of microsurgery for posterior circulation aneurysms in the endovascular era. METHODS: A single institutional prospectively maintained database was queried from 2015 to 2025. RESULTS: Sixty-seven aneurysms were treated with microsurgery. Females comprised 55.2% (n = 37) of the cohort, and the median age was 55.4 years. Aneurysms were located along the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) in 23 patients, dis

Comparison of computer-aided quantitative measurement and physician visual assessment in the evaluation of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis: a vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis is a leading cause of ischemic stroke in China. Accurate assessment of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis through imaging techniques is crucial for guiding therapeutic interventions and prognostic stratification. Vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging (VWMRI) has emerged as a reliable method for evaluating intracranial arterial vessels. With the advancement of technology, computer-aided quantitative measurement (CAQM) is increasingly used in imaging assessment. This study aimed to compare physician visual assessment (PVA) with CAQM in the VW

Efficacy Analysis of a Script-based Guide for EVAR Execution: is it Possible to Reduce Patient Exposure to Contrast, Operative Time and Blood Loss even when Advanced Technologies are not Available?

INTRODUCTION: Despite the patient and medical staff exposure to radiation in endovascular aneurysm repair, the benefits of this abdominal aortic aneurysm type of surgical management are justified by minor recovery time and hospitalization, as well as an option for patients not elected to conventional open repair. In this minimally invasive surgical approach, time of procedure and radiation doses can be substantial--and the increasing frequency of these procedures and it's complexity have impelled vascular surgeons to face additional and successive risk to occupational radiation exposure. Metic

Indocyanine Green Angiography Aids in Prediction of Limb Salvage in Vascular Trauma.

BACKGROUND: In cases of severe vascular trauma, traditional means for assessing viability using Doppler and angiography can have limited application. Indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) allows for a rapid qualitative assessment of tissue perfusion that serves as an important adjunct to these traditional methods, which can also be particularly helpful in guiding therapy. METHODS/RESULTS: We present a case of complicated ankle fracture with severe vascular compromise, which illustrates the role of ICGA as an assessment tool to guide therapy and decision-making in cases of acute limb threat. IC

Analysis of SSH library of rice variety Aganni reveals candidate gall midge resistance genes.

The Asian rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzae, is a serious insect pest causing extensive yield loss. Interaction between the gall midge and rice genotypes is known to be on a gene-for-gene basis. Here, we report molecular basis of HR- (hypersensitive reaction-negative) type of resistance in Aganni (an indica rice variety possessing gall midge resistance gene Gm8) through the construction and analysis of a suppressive subtraction hybridization (SSH) cDNA library. In all, 2,800 positive clones were sequenced and analyzed. The high-quality ESTs were assembled into 448 non-redundant gene sequences.

Purification and identification of the Kazal domain of a novel serine protease inhibitor, Hespintor, through a bacterial (Escherichia coli) expression system.

In this study, Hespintor, a protein with unknown function, was screened and obtained from the hepatoblastoma cell line, HepG2, using suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH). Sequence analysis demonstrated that the protein is a novel secreting member of the Kazal-type serine protease inhibitor (serpin) family, and possesses the basic structure of serpin, which is highly homologous to esophageal cancer-related gene 2 (ECRG2). To further elucidate its biological functions, the Hespintor protein was expressed and purified. The coding sequence of the Hespintor Kazal domain was cloned into the p

Automated multivolume placental reconstruction using three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound and infrared camera tracking.

OBJECTIVES: Placental insufficiency contributes to many obstetric pathologies, but there is no bedside clinical tool to evaluate placental perfusion. We have developed a method to acquire multiple three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler (PD) ultrasound (US) volumes of placental vasculature, with infrared camera tracking of the precise spatial location of the transducer providing global coordinates. These volumes are reconstructed automatically ('stitched') into a model of the entire placenta. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of automated reconstruction in an US phantom and t

Convolutional neural network metal artifact reduction in ultra-high resolution photon counting detector CT of middle- and inner-ear implants.

BACKGROUND: Metallic inner- and middle-ear implants with submillimeter structures requiring ultra-high resolution (UHR) imaging invariably result in metal artifacts at CT, which can obscure adjacent microstructures and subtle pathologic findings. Current metal artifact reduction techniques can be less effective for small metal objects or metal in heterogeneous background anatomy, and can sometimes introduce new artifacts or noise. PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate an image-domain convolutional neural network to reduce metal artifacts near inner- and middle-ear implants in UHR photon-counting-d

Thymoma habitat segmentation and risk prediction model using CT imaging and K-means clustering.

BACKGROUND: Thymomas, though rare, present a wide range of clinical behaviors, from indolent to aggressive forms, making accurate risk stratification crucial for treatment planning. Traditional methods such as histopathology and radiological assessments often lack the ability to capture tumor heterogeneity, which can impact prognosis. Radiomics, combined with machine learning, provides a method to extract and analyze quantitative imaging features, offering the potential to improve tumor classification and risk prediction. By segmenting tumors into distinct habitat zones, it becomes possible to

Time-of-Arrival Parametric Maps and Virtual Bolus Images Derived From Contrast-Enhanced Time-Resolved Radial Magnetic Resonance Angiography Improve the Display of Brain Arteriovenous Malformation Vascular Anatomy.

OBJECTIVES: Time-of-arrival (TOA) maps can be derived from high-resolution 4-dimensional (4D) contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) data sets to provide a quantitative description of contrast material arrival time in each voxel. This information can further be processed to create a compressed time evolution curve that virtually shortens the contrast bolus (virtual bolus [VB]). The purpose of this project was to determine whether TOA-enhanced 4D MRA and/or VB imaging improve the display of contrast kinetics in patients with vascular disease. METHODS: High-resolution whole-brai

A Ruptured Tri-Lobulated ICA-PCom Aneurysm Presenting with Preserved Neurological Function: Case Report and Clinical-Anatomical Analysis.

Background and Clinical Significance: Although rupture of aneurysms at the internal carotid-posterior communicating artery (ICA-PCom) junction accounts for a small percentage of all ruptured intracranial aneurysms, they are clinically relevant due to their proximity to perforator-rich cisterns, the optic-carotid-oculomotor pathways and flow-diverting zones, as well as their high likelihood for causing early neurological instability. Additionally, ruptured ICA-PCom aneurysms that have multiple lobulations are associated with increased variability in wall shear stress, local inflammatory remodel

Evaluation of a deformable image registration algorithm for image-guided thermal ablation of liver tumors on clinically acquired MR-temperature maps.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative real-time MRI-based temperature mapping techniques are hampered by abdominal motion. Intrascan motion can be reduced by rapid acquisition sequences such as 2D echo planar imaging (EPI), and inter-scan organ displacement can be compensated by image processing such as optical flow (OF) algorithms. However, motion field estimation can be seriously affected by local variation of signal intensity on magnitude images inherent to tissue heating, potentially leading to erroneous temperature estimates. PURPOSE: This study aims to characterize, in the context of clinical MRI-gu
