Impact of targeted lower-limb exercises on biomechanical and neuromuscular risk factors associated with medial tibial stress syndrome.

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) is linked to biomechanical risk factors such as high tibial loading, often influenced by underlying motor control strategies. Active interventions utilising multiplanar loading to retrain motor control may reduce tibial loading, yet their effects remain unclear, particularly whether they induce fatigue or beneficial potentiation. This study randomised 20 active individuals to single-leg lateral hops (SLLH) or controlled step-downs (CSD) interventions. Kinetic, kinematic, and electromyographic adaptations were assessed via a standardised jump-landing task ex

A translational cross-modal control-cost framework for executive breakdown.

Across neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions, patients often know what they should do yet cannot bring themselves to do it. This dissociation between intact knowledge and failed implementation, which we call the knowing-doing gap, is clinically important but lacks a unified, measurable account. We propose that converting knowledge into action carries a cost, termed executive friction (Ψ f ), and that behavior breaks down when this cost exceeds the control resources available to pay it. The proposal is specified at two levels: a measurable factor estimated from observable indicators, and

Human Factors and Device Engineering in OTC Intranasal Drug Delivery: GentleMist Technology™.

Intranasal drug delivery is noninvasive, rapid-acting, and well suited to self-administration, yet the real-world performance of nasal sprays depends on the interaction among formulation, device mechanics, nasal anatomy, and user technique rather than on the active ingredient alone. This narrative review examines how aerosol science, regional targeting, and human factors jointly shape intranasal performance, using GentleMist Technology™ as a representative example of emerging device-centered development. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and anatomically informed in vitro models indicate that

GEDO: topology-based inference of gene module activity in Sjögren's disease.

Inferring gene module activity is key to understanding transcriptomic dysregulation in case-control studies. Most existing gene set analysis methods focus on differences between groups without considering the complex geometry of the data. We introduce GEDO, a graph and topology-based method that infers gene module activity through a transition score, quantifying the shift from healthy controls to diseased individuals. When applied to bulk RNA-seq data from Sjögren's disease patients and healthy controls (PRECISESADS cohort), and a breast cancer dataset from The Cancer Genome Atlas, GEDO was be

Development and Use of Two Low-Cost Models for Training Veterinary Students in Equine Reproductive Skills.

Veterinary schools are tasked with teaching an increasing number of clinical skills to a constantly increasing number of veterinary students. In addition, they are faced with the ethical and logistical challenges of using live animals for teaching. This perfect storm has prompted a shift toward using non-animal teaching models for training and evaluation of student learning. Veterinary school-developed teaching models are becoming more common as educators look for nontraditional methods of teaching important clinical skills. The current commercial large animal reproduction models include bovin

MRI mapping of hemodynamics in the human spinal cord.

Impaired spinal cord vascular function contributes to numerous neurological pathologies, making it important to be able to noninvasively characterize these changes. Here, we propose a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based method to map spinal cord vascular reactivity (SCVR). We used a hypercapnic breath-holding task to evoke a systemic vasodilatory response during concurrent blood oxygenation level-dependent fMRI. SCVR amplitude and hemodynamic delay were mapped at the group level as proof-of-concept of the approach, and in two highly-sampled participants to probe feasibility/stab

Optimizing Time-Sensitive Traffic Scheduling in Low-Earth-Orbit Satellite Networks.

In contrast to terrestrial networks, the rapid movement of low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites causes frequent changes in the topology of intersatellite links (ISLs), resulting in dynamic shifts in transmission paths and fluctuations in multi-hop latency. Moreover, limited onboard resources such as buffer capacity and bandwidth competition contribute to the instability of these links. As a result, providing reliable quality of service (QoS) for time-sensitive flows (TSFs) in LEO satellite networks becomes a challenging task. Traditional terrestrial time-sensitive networking methods, which depend

gcDLSeg: integrating graph-cut into deep learning for binary semantic segmentation.

Binary semantic segmentation in computer vision is a fundamental problem. As a model-based segmentation method, the graph-cut approach was one of the most successful binary segmentation methods thanks to its global optimality guarantee of the solutions and its practical polynomial-time complexity. Recently, many deep learning (DL) based methods have been developed for this task and yielded remarkable performance, resulting in a paradigm shift in this field. To combine the strengths of both approaches, we propose in this study to integrate the graph-cut approach into a deep learning network for

Classification accuracy of pain intensity induced by leg blood flow restriction during walking using machine learning based on electroencephalography.

Pain assessment in clinical practice largely relies on patient-reported subjectivity. Although previous studies using fMRI and EEG have attempted objective pain evaluation, their focus has been limited to resting conditions. This study aimed to classify pain levels during movement using a wearable device with three forehead electrodes and advanced machine learning. Twenty-five healthy participants performed walking tasks under tourniquet-induced pain. It was confirmed that pain increased as walking time extended. Walking time was used as an index of pain stimulus intensity, and EEG data were c

Enhancing emotional flexibility: A randomized controlled trial of cognitive behavioral training combined with anodal transcranial direct current stimulation.

Emotional flexibility is a basic ability that allows individuals to adapt their emotional responses to environmental changes. However, there is currently insufficient evidence to support the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral training and transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) in enhancing emotional flexibility. In this study, 120 college students (mean age = 21.36 ± 1.24 years, comprising 76 women and 44 men) were randomly assigned to four groups: anodal tDCS combined with behavioral training (Group 1), sham stimulation combined with behavioral training (Group 2), anodal tDCS alone

Current practices for assessing usability of novel point-of-care diagnostics for infectious diseases: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Novel diagnostics, particularly point-of-care (POC) tests, play a crucial role in the early detection and management of infectious diseases, especially in resource-limited settings. Ensuring test performance and quality while minimising the risk of human error becomes more relevant when shifting testing tasks from highly controlled settings like centralised laboratories to people with minimal training. Applying usability and human factors engineering principles can reduce the challenges related to human errors. Despite existing frameworks and tools, the practical application of u

Male Spousal Caregivers Are Increasing, but Only in Less Demanding Care Roles.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there are gender differences in trends in spousal caregiving among older adults. BACKGROUND: While some evidence suggests that men are increasingly adopting caregiving roles, this trend has yet to be demonstrated in population-representative data, and little is known about the types of caregiving tasks men are providing. METHOD: Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (2002-2018), we investigate trends in the prevalence of spousal caregiving among both men and women. We also analyze subcategories of caregiving, including primary versus secondary caregiving,

Decision-Making Signatures of Methamphetamine and Alcohol Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant decision making is a hallmark of substance use disorders (SUDs), often impeding recovery. While uncertainty, which comprises risk and ambiguity, is central to real-world choices, its distinct effects in SUDs remain underexplored. In this study, we disentangle risk and ambiguity to identify context-specific impairments in methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHODS: We used a Choice under Risk and Ambiguity task to examine uncertainty decision making (UDM) in 101 individuals with MUD, 56 individuals with AUD, and their respective healthy cont

The TDGL Module: A Fast Multi-Scale Vision Sensor Based on a Transformation Dilated Grouped Layer.

Effectively capturing multi-scale object features is crucial for vision sensors used in road object detection tasks. Traditional spatial pyramid pooling methods fuse multi-scale feature information but lack adaptability in dynamically adjusting convolution operations based on their actual needs. This limitation prevents them from fully utilizing spatial hierarchies and contextual information. To address this challenge, we propose a Transformation Dilated Grouped Layer (TDGL) module, a fast multi-scale vision sensor based on deep learning, designed to enhance both efficiency and accuracy in roa

Developmental differences in hippocampal long-axis contributions to memory precision.

Memory precision varies along the hippocampal long axis in the mature brain. Yet, little is known about how the development of long-axis functionality influences this precision. We characterized how children and adults engage the long axis to form precise memories. Children (7-9 years) and adults performed two tasks that encouraged an orientation to specific details versus general scene categories during encoding. After, they performed a recognition test with studied scenes and yoked lures. Adults had more precise memories than children in that they better discriminated studied scenes from lur

RNN-AHF Framework: Enhancing Multi-focal Nature of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Lesion Region in MRI Image Using Optimized Rough Neural Network Weight and Anti-Homomorphic Filter.

INTRODUCTION: Image enhancement of the Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) lesion region in neonatal brain MR images is a challenging task due to the diffuse (i.e., multi-focal) nature, small size, and low contrast of the lesions. Classifying the stages of HIE is also difficult because of the unclear boundaries and edges of the lesions, which are dispersed throughout the brain. Moreover, unclear boundaries and edges are due to chemical shifts, partial volume artifacts, and motion artifacts. Further, voxels may reflect signals from adjacent tissues. Existing algorithms perform poorly in HIE l

Functional Connectivity of Language-Related Cerebellar Regions Is Reduced in Schizophrenia Patients.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a widespread psychiatric disorder that is traditionally characterized by positive and negative symptoms. However, recent focus has shifted to cognitive deficits as a crucial aspect. The cerebellum, conventionally tied to motor coordination, is now recognized as pivotal in the pathophysiology of SZ cognitive impairments. Proposed disruptions in the cortico-cerebellar-thalamic-cortico circuit contribute to these deficits. Despite evidence of cerebellar abnormalities, within-cerebellum functional connectivity is often overlooked. This study explores spontaneous functional in
